The cold storm carried on with its overwhelming booms from the thunder shaking the house from the outside. I always know what Mark is going to say. My brother only knows three words — cool, weird, and gross. Really. That's his whole vocabulary. As a joke, I gave him a dictionary for his last birthday. "You're weird," Mark said when I handed it to him. "What a gross gift." He scraped his white high-tops on the ground as we followed Stanley to the beat-up, red pickup truck. "Carry my backpack for me," Mark said, trying to shove the bulging backpack at me. "No way," I told him. "Carry it yourself." The backpack contained his Walkman, about thirty tapes, comic books, his Game Boy, and at least fifty game cartridges. I knew he planned to spend the whole month lying on the hammock on the screened-in back porch of the farmhouse, listening to music and playing video games. Well . . . no way! Mom and Dad said it was my job to make sure Mark got outside and enjoyed the farm. We were so cooped up in the city all year. That's why they sent us to visit Grandpa Kurt and Grandma Miriam for a month each summer — to enjoy the great outdoors. We stopped beside the truck while Stanley searched his overall pockets for the key. "It's going to get pretty hot today," Stanley said, "unless it cools down." A typical Stanley weather report. I gazed out at the wide, grassy field beyond the small train station parking lot. Thousands of tiny white puffballs floated up against the clear blue sky. It was so beautiful! Naturally, I sneezed. I love visiting my grandparents' farm. My only problem is, I'm allergic to just about everything on it. So Mom packs several bottles of my allergy medicine for me — and lots of tissues.…

He must have forgotten to wind it again. He jumped out of bed and stumbled to the bathroom. Fortunately, he'd showered just two days ago so he could get by without one today. He splashed his face with cold water, brushed his teeth, and slicked back his hair with Bril cream. Then he returned to his bedroom to get dressed in cotton pants, a cotton button-down shirt, and a sweater vest. He hadn't polished his shoes for a few days and they needed it, but they'd just have to wait; he didn't have time this morning.…

Throughout this book, Carr uses many different techniques in language and writing. These techniques are foreshadowing, hyperbole, parallelism, repetition, and metaphoric language. Foreshadowing is when the author (Carr) makes it clear on what is about to happen further on in the narrative. In this case, Carr makes it clear that there is a great devastation about to happen in this small town. “... then he remembered the total fire ban... by the time they got back to the boat the day was hot...”…

It was a warm, but breezy Sunday afternoon. The usual day of fall, the leaves were turning; reds, yellows, and oranges flooded the trees (imagery). Leaves danced around the hard concrete pavement (personification), and then lifting off into the air. I was walking to Tyzer’s house, suddenly; a chill ran up my back. Turning around, there was a pearly Tahoe. But, this Tahoe was familiar; I turned around and walked faster. The chill in my spine turned into pierce, throbbing pain; grabbing my back I turned around once again. Stones were being thrown at me, it was Harper and Jaylen. Jaylen drove slowly, right behind me, as Harper chucked rocks in my direction, from the window. Beep, beep (onomatopoeia); Jaylen honked the horn. “Where do you think you are going hot shot?” Jaylen yelled, though the driver window. “Can you just leave me alone? Seriously, everything is getting old. I have never done anything to you guys.” I stopped. “Well, listen here, you were kind of born, that’s the problem.” Jaylen spoke louder, still following me. I could see Tyzer’s house across the street and felt my eyes moisten. “Jordynn, honey, the thing you do not understand is, if you were to die no one, none of your family or friends would care. Oh, wait that’s right she doesn’t have friends, “Jayden and Harper looked at each other and giggled, “except for that Tyzer guy. But, he only hangs out with you because you’re easy.” Harper chuckled as they drove away. Hot tears ran down my face, as I sprinted across the street, to the safety of Tyzer’s welcoming home.…

Stepping outside into the storm, the man immediately began to sprint. The crisp, chilled rain hit hard against his face as he ran through the streets. When he reached his destination he slammed through the door of the grocery store he often referred to as “hell.” The store consisted of only 5 lanes for customer checkout, 2 of them currently occupied by high school girls with their faces glued to their cell phones. The light fixtures in the back were flickering, likely due to the storm raging outside.…
