Personal Narrative: Quick-Start Tennis Program
When I was in Montessori, my teacher always told me to follow my dreams. Throughout my school years, I always put 100% effort into everything I did so that I could find my dream and pursue it. The Montessori Christmas play, visits to multiple farms, Summit Soccer and Basketball, Knights of the Round Table, and Praise team all helped me find my true passion and led me to being the person I am today. All those years I was searching for my true passion until one day, I found it. My mom handed me a racquet and I was set to follow my dreams. The first time I remember playing tennis was a simple Quick-Start tennis program. I was 6 years old and had decided to go with my friend Ryan Burns. All of the tennis coaches saw how much potential I had. …show more content…
Because of tournaments of weekends and practice right after school everyday, I miss a tremendous amount of social events. For example, I have only gone to Summit’s Field Day once because 2 out of 3 of the Friday’s it is held on, I had a big national tournament. I also don't get together with my friends as much as other girls in my grade. Because of the rigorous tennis schedule, it is hard for me to get involved in other activities such as other sports, school clubs, etc,… Unlike other kids, I rarely have a weekend where I do nothing. I am either playing a tournament or finishing all my homework over the weekend so that I can balance school with tennis. I also rarely have a holiday without a tennis tournament. For example, on Christmas day, my family and I are flying to Tucson, AZ to play winter nationals. Being 5 foot 10 inches, I am constantly getting injured. I do multiple things to prevent injuries but it doesn't always work. I sacrifice inuring my body to play tennis. I sacrifice a large list of things in order to play at the high level I do. I believe these sacrifices are worth it because I am constantly doing something that I …show more content…
The Summit has always stressed having a good moral character, which is one reason why I would love to attend there. I have learned to be independent and not let anyones opinion change me. I have learned to balance my tennis schedule with my school. For example, I try to knock out all my homework over the weekend so that I can have more time during the week to play tennis. I have learned to persevere and give 100% effort into everything I do because I know everything counts. This helps me in my academics because I will have tough homework assignments and I need to be able to push through them and put my best work into them. I have learned to be a leader and guide other people, helping them be the best person they can be. In school, I am always trying to set a good example for other students so that we have an environment that we can learn and improve. My current tennis coach is constantly working on my mental training to improve my composure on the tennis court. This has helped me see the positive things in the negative situations. For example, recently my friends have decided they don't want to be friends with me anymore. They positive in this is that I get to meet new people and I have really opened my eyes to the world around me. I have learned that excuses don't get you anywhere, and you might as well finish the task before its too late. One night at 11:00 P.M. I realized I

Life is comprised of a series of learning profound learning experiences. On that stands out occurred last year in seventh grade. Two friends and I decided we wanted to try something new, to learn how to play basketball! We made that decision mainly because we wanted to do an activity together for the winter term, and seventh graders didn't have the option of doing the winter school play. We were very hesitant; only one of us had any experience playing basketball, and we didn't think it would be very fun to run up and down a court trying to get a ball in a hoop. Still we kept an open mind and began to learn how to play.…

“When we first started it was for a better cardio workout and to stay healthy. I had no idea on how to play racquet ball but Tom knew. Starting out we played by the rules. But as the weeks went by so did the rules. We would kick, push trip etcetera.” Kevin explained. At Edgewater Park racquetball and fitness it was in the summer of 1986 Kevin and his best friend Tomas White wanted to stay in shape in a exciting way instead of using boring treadmills. So they solved this problem by taking up racquetball. Thinks hard to remember the time Kevin says “At the time I was a Junior in highschool and Tom was a Senior so I was about 16 and he was 17 years olds.”…

I started doing good in 12s but not as good as I wanted to and was expected. Thomas became my full time coach and I actually became really fond of him. We went to a lot of different camps that I would get invited too and was getting better. Around this time, a girl that had just started playing tennis started to come to practice and I knew who she was because I played her and my dad told me that her dad was a doctor he worked with. I tried to be nice with her but I didn't really become friends with her and she became closer to another girl named Laura. I was still friends with them and would walk with them but it was more their friendship then me with them. We all ended up traveling together with Thomas to different tournaments and that was always really fun, and that was around the time that tennis really became my life. I started realizing how many times I would say "can't. have tennis" and it didn't really bother me much, at first. My friends understood when I couldn't spend the night because i had tennis early the next day or when I couldn't do anything on weekdays and most weekends but that was tennis and that was…

A memory from my athletics that will stick with me forever was the last time I was able to lace up and play basketball on our home court. We played a long time rival, Aquin. The game was down to the wire and I was able to tie the game with 24 seconds left. Then we got the ball back and Ellie was fouled with about a second left, which if anyone on our team were to be put on the line, I would choose her. She went up and swooshed the first shot! Then, since Aquin wouldn't be able to get the rebound, make it down the court, and shoot with the time left, coach told her to miss the second shot. Ellie then winded up and chucked the ball right off the backboard so they ended up getting the ball out of bounds anyway. We blocked the throw in, and I ran…

To express his believe about stretching one’s limit, the great Guy Finley had once stated, “The limit of your present understanding is not the limit of your possibilities.” Inspired by his quote, I, Giang Pham, believe that I would be a valuable member of McGarvin’s Academic Pentathlon team. Based on my personal knowledge of Pentathlon, I have first-handedly experience the soul of a Pentathlete through various study sessions at Ethan Allen. Because of this, I have developed a deep insight of the components necessary to be a true Pentathlete. In addition to having first-hand experience, I also have extremely high expectations for both myself and other students, for it is essential in my academic growth. With this, one like myself could ultimately…

Enclosed within a 27’ X 78’ tennis court it was the final point of the match. As I shuffled and pivoted to the right with both my arms gripping my racket at shoulder height; I took a deep breath as I approached the tennis ball and made my move. I pondered how my nerves synapsed with my tendons and ligaments in my arms and feet to produce a forehand, while monitoring my heart beat and regulating metabolic demand, an intrigue with the workings of this familiar, yet mysterious body. It was a matter of seconds, and the ball landed exactly on the boundary of the singles’ court. Game, set, and match! Ten years of practice has taught me every point be played like my life depends on it and these experiences led me to my passion and my future: medicine…

Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…

After winning my semi-finals match 12-4, that put me in the finals against a kid I wrestled 3 times before this. He pinned me the first time we wrestled and the next 2 times we wrestled I pinned him. Going into this match I had a lot of confidence because I knew I could win. I underestimated the want he had to win. He surprised me and came out strong. My sectional…
