Once I did all of that I went to the first floor and got some breakfast(It was sausage, pancakes, and some porcupine). Then I thought am I the only one up right now? So I finish eating and I go back to our room and saw that everyone was awake either because I forgot to grab the door from slamming or because they woke themselves up.Either way I was in trouble for going down stairs without

It was a Wednesday morning that I'll never forget. I had woken up at 3 in the morning because I had to be at a park for a physical fitness test. The test was not until 6 but because I was taking the bus, I had to make sure I was out of bed and out of the house early in the morning. The first few minutes of my commute were peaceful; there was light rain, birds chirping, the insect's low buzzing in the distance. It was just a normal morning. After I had gotten on the 85 bus that goes down Central to Jefferson Park I was a little groggy so I rested up against the heating compartment. The little designated area where you push a button and the heat comes on during the winter months so that commuters are not stuck out in the cold for too…

It was a crisp spring day the birds were chirping and the bugs were buzzing and my brother and I, at the age of 10, were playing around in the backyard of our house. All we were doing was just playing around in the backyard having a fun time being normal children as always. Then I came up with this perfect idea to play hockey because since we all love hockey. So we wouldn't work garage I got a plastic baseball bat and my brother got a wooden baseball bat plus a whiffle ball.…

I waited out in the cold and snow for what seemed like forever. I eventually saw our car pull up to the park. I saw my dad and my brother get out of the car and hurry towards me. When they got to me, my dad picked me up and carried me to the car. We got in and he drove me home. Then he helped me get out of the car. The pain was so bad I had to hop to the door. Once inside our house, I hopped over to the couch, and laid down.…

On a sunny Saturday morning when I was 5 years old, my sister and I were playing a game where we would push ourselves off of our bed like it was a slide. Our room was a pigsty; it looked as if a tornado had passed through. The mess from our closet met up with the end of our bed. I had just slid down the bed feet first into the mess when it happened.…

The quarters still weren’t ready when we arrived so we spent a week in the American Arms Hotel. We had two rooms, and there were plenty of stores and restaurants in the area. And the Army was paying for most of the meals, so the transition was tolerable. The kids liked it, but it was small, and I was grateful it was only a week. We received the call our quarters were available for inspection. We were lucky to receive a four bedroom apartment on the first floor. There was a basement for storage and laundry, so even the first floor was close to being equivalent to the second floor. I was a senior Major, so I was eligible to get on the waiting list for a duplex. They were lovely houses, and we hoped we would get one. We got our DoD driver’s licenses, arranged for quartermaster furniture and standard utilities including a phone. It was terribly expensive to use the phone; even local calls cost significant money, and overseas calls were about $6 a minute, which is the equivalent of over $17 in 2015 dollars. That limited our calls to the parents severely, but, fortunately, both Mom and Blanche visited. The apartments had balconies, and ours was nicely…

When Fav and I got into his car we were going to turn the heater on full blast to try and warm up, but it was a lost cause, as the car would not start. Therefore, we had to take some MRE warmers and boil some water to melt the ice that got on the engine. After an hour of doing this, we finally melted enough ice to be able to start the car. We quickly turned on the heater to full blast to warm up, when the heater finally warmed up it was no help because we were almost home anyway. We grabbed what gear we really need too, ran into our building, and rushed to our room. As I fumbled to use my key card to open the door with the icicle’s I called fingers now, I could hear the storm rage on outside all I could think of was the warm bath was going to take to warm up my soul. When I finally got the door to my room opened I barged in dropped my gear and stripped off the ice covered clothes I had on, I then jump into the tub and started a hot bath it felt like I was in a hot spring on top of a mountain. After all this, the cold never really bothers me anymore, but I do love hot baths…

It was a cold stormy night. The house was still. I was lying in bed when I heard a series of knocks at the door. As I descended the stairs the knocks were getting louder and louder. I thought to myself, "Who could be at the door this late at night?" When I opened the door there was a tall man dressed all in black. He smelled of fish and looked like he just walked out of a mud pit. He was having car troubles and needed to use the phone. I invited him in and told him that the phone was down the hall in the living room. Instead of calling the tow truck he called his friend, George, to come pick him up. I invited him to have a cup of coffee and some cookies while he waited for his friend to pick him up. We talked for about an hour when there was another knock at the door.…

We had worked the first nine days on a house in Blandford, Massachusetts where you had to drive up what the locals called the "devils staircase" to get to the home we were to cover with vinyl siding. It rained everyday and was cold so we were chilled to the bone. We wore garbage bags as raincoats and had to empty the water from our tools belts in was so damn wet. We had to sleep in a barn as we had no money for a hotel. The barn was warm as that was where he kept his exotic birds.…
