Personal Narrative: Pilot Fish
The ocean is a beautiful sanctuary not only for the animals that coexist within it, but also for people that spend more time in the water than on land. There are instances where the sea can represent a wide array of emotions such as respect, fear, and adventure. To me the ocean water is nothing less than a second home on the grounds that it reminds me so much of my home with emotions such as compatibility, fighting and peace coursing through the currents.
Underwater life wouldn’t work without some compatibility amongst the sea creatures, just like at home without general cooperation the house would be chaotic. Naucrates Ductor otherwise known as Pilot Fish have established a profession that surrounds eating parasites clinging to sharks. In return for their service the shark does not consume them at dinner time. This partnership is found in the house as well. When my siblings and I are rough housing at home and end up breaking something, we partner up and conspire on how to avoid punishment, sometimes it works and somethings it doesn’t. Just like the compatibility of sea life siblings don’t always get along and that corporation can transform into something nasty. It wouldn’t be referred to as the wild if there wasn’t blood involved at some point. While most marine life can live in harmony there are times when appetites need

When admiring a coral reef in the middle of the day there is a calming sensation about being there. The fish and sharks are resting which establishes a peace amidst predator and prey. Then the water current slowly creates movement in the coral giving the sense of a calm harmony. In a family this is rare time but also a memorable one; it will only occur when the entire family is together engaging in the same activity, for instance watching a movie or going out to a formal restaurant. This sense of peace is short-lived in the ocean and in the house but cherished all the

Since the 1970’s when the movie Jaws first showed up on big screens around the country, people have been afraid of beaches, in fear of shark attacks. Not only have they been apprehensive about swimming in the ocean, but some have such malicious feelings towards sharks (especially Atlantic White Sharks due to their role in the movie) that they have taken to hunting and killing this already dwindling species. (Earth Island Institute) It is no secret that pollution and overfishing, as well as numerous other factors have caused the biodiversity of marine life to drastically decrease. It is also known that the ocean ecosystem relies much on all members of the food chain- particularly top predators like sharks. Larger sharks,…

Imagine you see a male fish and it physically fuses together with a female; amazingly interesting but it is gross. How would you feel? With that brings us the Anglerfish, a.k.a. the Lophiiformes, who lives in the ecosystem of the abyssal zone which is in bottom of the ocean, where the temperature is below what someone would say is freezing. An ecosystem is all the living things and nonliving things that live in a specific area or environment and interact with each other. The Abyssal zone is not really packed with sunlight, so it feels like the darkness takes over and no one can do anything. Besides sunlight, this zone also has not much food, so animals are just waiting, looking, and waiting long enough so they don’t…

I remember day after day going to swimming lessons in the summer of 2002 at the Mount Vernon pool. Almost every day I walked by the ladder that seemed to go on forever. I used to sit on the pools edge and watch the older kids do flips and other cool tricks off of the high dive. Many times I had gotten half way up the ladder but couldn't bring myself to go all the way up. For a seven year old going off the high dive was like a right of passage and a way to be seen as "cool" in the eyes of the older kids. Today I will be telling you about the first time a braved the high dive.…

It all started out at the reefs of the cold winter season in the Pacific Ocean. Against all odds there was Iro the jellyfish leader realized upon his jellyfish species that they were running out of food on their land. Benko and Seno the twins, the leaders of the sea turtles ruled the next land after them and made an agreement between Iro since long time ago during the massacre of the jellyfish and turtles for land. It was to never cross each others place or another war would break out between each other . Slowly dying jellyfish after jellyfish, Iro knew he had to do something and that was to cross the boundary that separates the jellyfish and the turtles and find a spot for sheltering with food for the jellyfish.…

With research and studies being conducted on both wild and captive Killer Whales, data and information has been generated that adds question to the health issues associated with captivity. “The killer whale (Orcinus orca) has proven to be among the most difficult of all species to hold adequately in zoological facilities. The killer whale is a particularly large-brained and long-lived species who evidences a high degree of social complexity in the wild.” (Noonan) Their behavior and relationships with other whales within the family, known as a pod, creates an immense bond between the animals. Whales that were documented inhabiting the Pacific Northwest, remain in their natal group for most, if not all, of their life. (Robeck) When in captivity,…

Schweitzer claims that the sea is a motherly realm; however, like a lover, “the voice of the sea is seductive; never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation” (Chopin 18). Though Schweitzer and Chopin allude to the sea as possessing competing metaphorical implications, the former makes the intriguing claim that the sea possesses two internal contradictions: a voice which guides one to solitude through a language without words, and a touch which surrounds one in a gentle, loving embrace (Schweitzer…

I bought two pounds of Alaskan King Salmon today. To me, the most exciting thing about cooking salmon has to be making sure in getting the skin nice and crispy. Score, salt, pepper, cajun spice, oil….skin side down, a touch of butter. And that!...keeps the salmon so moist! One of my most favorite things to cook is a great succotash with fish. Just mindblowing! Start by caramelizing onions in the pan, add corn, red peppers, yellow peppers, green peppers, zucchinis, and squash. The salmon is resting.…

An important basketball player once said, “Never say never because limits, like fears, often are an illusion.” Michael Jordan was saying that you can run from those illusions or you can challenge them. When I was in 6th grade, an important person told me that I should join Sunfish Swimming. I wasn’t really sure what to make of that and laughed it off. A week later, I was told that there would be a swim meet and that I should go and see if it would be something I was interested in. So I agreed, just to see what it would be like. We drove to Fargo and watched the swim meet. When I came back I was not sure if I would be able to handle it and be under that kind of pressure. But they talked me into it, and I said yes to swimming a few days…

I have a deep interest in the ocean and marine life, which was fostered when my family and I moved to the Pacific Coast. This interest grew further after I went on a backstage tour to the aquarium at the Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. Due to this continuous exposure to the ocean and the creatures that live there, I am focusing my education around my interest in marine life. It's for this reason that I’m majoring in Marine Biology with a minor in Chemistry. With this education, my goal is to become an Aquarist, and build my way up to becoming an ocean or aquarium diver. As a diver, I want to have the opportunity to study coral reefs, and create and implement conservation plans. In addition, I want to study sea turtles and ways to conserve their declining…

“Why do we love the sea? It is because it has some potent power to make us think things we like to think.” Robert Henri statement not only applies to himself but it also explains many other human’s feelings towards the ocean. This passion is significant in “The Seafarer” by an anonymous Anglo-Saxon scop. “The Seafarer” intertwines the positives and negatives of a life at sea. The story goes through the sacrificial day to day life of a sailor. The voyages cause many controversial scenarios in the sailor’s life. Although sailing a life at sea is very interfering to a normal life, the Seafarer still loves the life he lives and also finds himself on a much deeper spiritual level than any ocean depth he has ever came across.…
