Regardless, the outcome is dependent on the evidence presented by the probationer and findings of the court, however the probationer must be permitted to speak on his own behalf to either provide evidence of his innocence or give explanation for the reason he is in violation…
The husband was convicted and found guilty .During presentencing investigation the probation officer discovers that the husband had served in the U.S. military in Somalia. In which his job entailed gruesome duties which led to him suffering from from post-traumatic stress disorder and that has regressed him to the level of a 10-year-old because of his imprisonment in Somalia. And In the opinion of his treating psychiatrists, any prolonged confinement, even for a few hours, could cause even further regression and could trigger explosive outbursts and traumatic flashbacks. Lastly his convictions occurred before his military service in Somalia and he served a total of 60 days custody on those, without incident…
There are many reports that a probation officer must give. For this particular discussion, I will focus on a presentence report. A judge relies “on presentence reports, prepared by probation officers” when they are ready to sentence an offender (Bergman, n.d.). They (the judge) use this report to help “in making sentencing decisions” (Bergman, n.d.). A well written presentence report will have the following information to help a judge in making his or her decision, “circumstances of the offense”, a “defendant’s personal history” as well as any criminal background available, and a “victim impact statement” (Bergman, n.d.). In the end, a well-written report (of any kind) will help the person making a decision to make the best one possible.…
The clients still agree to share information even if they fully understand the reporting laws. Remind the client o what they have sighed. Some illegal behaviors that may pose harm to themselves and to others should be reported. In such cases, the legal and ethical concerns are consistent, and reporting feels like the right thing to do. Regardless this counselor’s comments to his client about the areas that the counselor can’t hold confidential, it’s important for the counselor to be specific about the kinds of criminal activities, or the potential harm must be reported.…
Prior to ARI funding, the public defender and the probation officer serving the drug court managed mixed caseloads of both drug court and non-drug court participants. ARI funding allows the probation officer and a contract defense attorney to focus solely on the needs of drug court offender. Evidence-based/promising practices in use: LSI-R assessment, cognitive-behavioral therapy, Thinking for a Change curriculum, drug court Target population and reduction goals: Knox County has operated a drug court since 2008. From 2007 to 2009, Knox County committed to IDOC an annual average of 70 offenders who would have been eligible for diversion to a drug court program or other community-based supervision program. Knox County’s 25% reduction goal for the grant period, based on recent commitment levels within the target population, is 16. In February 2012, in exchange for supplemental funding, the reduction goal was increased to 24. Overview of jurisdiction: Knox County, located in north central Illinois, covers approximately 719 square…
Courts try to circumvent the path these young people are on by addressing underlying issues that moved them to be in the possession of drugs. One of the main purposes of drug court is supervised probation, which is mandatory part of the juvenile’s treatment. Probation officers are trained to conduct clinical assessments, to monitor the treatment of the juvenile and conduct drug testing. As expected, other treatment and conditions apply. The only real difference between a juvenile drug court and the adult drug court is…
BOOM! That was the exhilarating sound of my first shot, and believe it or not I had actually hit something. It all started one morning in 1868 when I was home alone. I was only 8 years old, my father was dead and there was no one to hunt for the family. After an exciting experience as a young girl i went on to perform in carnivals and inspire other young girls to do great things.…
The probation officer is responsible for the pre-sentence investigation/report and must interview the defendant to define their characteristics and investigate financial or other circumstances affecting the defendant’s behavior. This could include interviewing the defendant’s family, friends, etc. The probation officer will also need to obtain information about any prior criminal record, which means collaborating with officers of the court and/or police officers that investigated the defendant. The probation officer also needs to collect information about harm and/or restitution of any victims impacted by the defendant’s offense. Additionally, the probation officer must identify an appropriate type of sentence for the court to impose, which means consulting with attorneys and possibly the judge (“Rule 32.…
My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…
time for me to begin my 10 minute warming up. I move my head side to side, stretch my legs, and I begin to walk briskly. I drank my water because I need to stay hydrated. When I was ready I sprinted out like a rocket. My brother began to time me. It took me 12 minutes to finish my one mile. Once I felt that my heart was pounding, my stomach started to develop painful cramps, and my My throat was as dry as a bone. I stopped and took deep breaths in and out. I took a five minute break and finished my 3 miles by walking. Once I finished my three miles I felt proud of myself and motivated for the next days to…
Growing up in Kokomo, Indiana there wasn’t much to the daily life in my hometown. I’d like to believe this is me telling the story of how through hard work and perseverance I could achieve my goal in high school. A goal that many told me was unachievable and stupid to pursue. What is this goal you wonder? My goal was to play Basketball at Kokomo High School.…
A moment when I as a writer felt an influence towards my ability to be literate was in my tenth grade English class, reading the novel Fahrenheit 451. Never before had I shown such appreciation and willingness to understand for a school assigned book, in truth my interest with school readings had been deteriorating due to the consistency of papers and assignments.. For years any school readings were easy to understand and majority held interesting tales, yet no piece of literature (even outside school) could manage to make me say “I’m buying this book to put on my shelf and read on my own.” Nothing brought “inspiration” or gave examples of “unique” to myself personally, only the basic sentence structures and dialogue for conversation. In short, I didn’t care how literate I was because I never saw anything to imprint on myself. The only novel I would like to own needs to impact both my mind and if successful my own writing. However, each passing page of Fahrenheit 451 managed to give me that inner meaning that I wanted my own writing to radiate.…
After retaking the LASSI I have noticed a considerable amount of improvement as well as regression. In the beginning of the year, I vowed to myself that I would become a better student. I wanted to maximize all of my abilities in order to be successful. So, after I took my first LASSI and had my talk with Mac, I began to implement new strategies meant to help me accomplish my goal. First I had to deal with my anxiety. In past years I suffered with a lot of anxiety while learning math. I used to love math very much, however, this changed after my 6th grade year. Math became a foreign subject to me. I could no longer make connections and solve problems. As a result, my grades in math began to drop. As a person who is used to getting A’s and B’s on assignments, I had a difficult time in coping with my failure since it didn’t live up to my standards in the subject of math. My difficulty with math eventually caused me to have anxiety. I had carried this anxiety until my sophomore year in high school. It seemed as if no matter how hard I tried to concentrate on math tests my mind would always become blank. Luckily I had an…
Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…
You can call it following in footsteps or walking the same path, but I don’t see it like that. My grandmother calls her daughter, mother calls her sister, and I call her Aunty. She has always been my figure to look up to. She has inspired me to be the person who I truly want to be. My Aunt Marie is a strong, beautiful, and successful woman who, in spite of her work, has always been there for me when it counts in my life. I want to not only follow in her line of work, but I want to have her strength, love, and poise during everything. She is my hero, my guiding light, a woman who has taught me to stay true to myself and become the person I want to be.…
