I moved from Detroit, MI to Ypsilanti, MI, for a better living. It was December 29, 2008. I had just given birth to my daughter. My daughter was born at 9:45p.m, weighing 5lbs and 3ounces. I named my daughter Saphira Parthenia Franks. Saphira died at 36 weeks, due to still born. The doctor told me” Sometimes this happens without a reason and you will be able to have more children”. I already had my mind made up, that I would wait until I turn thirty to have another baby. I was heartbroken and disgusted with myself. I was already going insane from the deaths of my father in November 2006 and my grandma in July 2008. Therefore, I was not able to cope with their three deaths at once.…

I admire an olympic gold medalist wrestler. He has been someone I’ve admired my whole life, he is known as the Michael Jordan of wrestling. His name is Dan Gable. He was born on October 25, 1948 , Waterloo, IA. He had one sister who was raped and murdered when she was in high school, and Dan was only 16. This is what drove him to win and compete in wrestling. I admire Dan Gable because he is hardworking, mentally tough, and a wrestler.…
“I got this! I got this! Just calm down and take position. You have prepared yourself for this race all morning.” “Just take your position and breathe.” “Why is my heart pounding like this?” “Inhale and exhale.” This is normal for UWA freshman Sarah McMillion on race day. She constantly overthinks and worries about her performance. Her nerves even cause her to wake up early to prepare.…

I was a young, black girl name Sylvia i was raised in Harlem. Everything was fine growing up in Harlem, but something was wrong with everyone else; but Sugar and I were the “ only ones just right”. Suddenly a lady moved on our block with nappy hair and proper speech and no makeup, I would laugh at , her but then again, I would laugh at, everyone especially the junk man who went to his business like her was some big time president. I would think i knew everything and had all the answers and no one could teach me anything that I didn’t know. I hated her though; Miss Moore, she was the only woman in the neighborhood that had only a “ Miss” and a “Moore” but no first name. She has cept for feets, which were fish white and spooky. The field trip…
I took this creative non-fiction writing class to sharpen my skills as a writer. It has been fun, and I have learned a lot about the mechanics of writing. We were taught to focus on ourselves as subjects in our papers because everyone has a story to tell that other people would be interested in reading about. Sometimes life is stranger than fiction, and more interesting to read, to-boot. From our book, Keep it real, by Lee Gutkind, the article, “The Memoir Craze” explains that readers are no longer just wanting to read about famous people, but they are also wanting to read about ordinary people’s lives too (Gutkind, 97).…
If you were ever to meet Rey Ryans you would think she was the most normal person as normal could be. She had a normal job and a very a normal home. Even Rey Ryans herself thought she was rather unextraordinary but obviously for the fact that this story even exists is the overwhelming proof that she wasn't.…
