Personal Narrative: My Writing In Spanish
Although my household is Spanish speaking, my parents were not able to get an advanced educations so as to teach me how to properly write in Spanish. So when we began working on this project, I was incredibly self conscious and afraid that it would not be as great as my other writing. It’s incredibly obvious when I write in Spanish that my dominant tongue is English. But to my surprise, my teacher was actually very impressed in how I did on the project. It was of course not perfect, but it helped me realize that there was no reason to be so doubtful in my writing. It was a lot of fun being able to experiment with a language that I have lived with for so long. I have never written creatively in Spanish, and found it challenging but also very

My writing process is usually all over the place, I have to be in my room with my door shut, my music on, my fan on, and my television on, weird, I know, but that is what I have to do in order to keep myself concentrated. After I am all situated I begin by writing down different ideas on a couple sheets of paper, listing ways I could support this idea and how it relates to my topic, sometimes when I am stuck I look up sample essays online to help me out of my rut. Once I finally choose an idea I start writing the first things that pop into my head down on another sheet of paper, it usually ends up being a jumbled mess that only I can understand. After all of my ideas are laid out onto the paper I begin placing numbers beside them so I know…

What is a legacy? Lin Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton described it as “planting seeds in a garden you never get to see”. In a similar way, the Broadway musical, In The Heights, sings about continuing what is passed down to you because one day it may be gone. One song in particular titled, “Paciencia y Fe” inspires me to work as hard as I can just like Abuela Claudia did when she immigrated from Cuba. The Broadway hits’ harmonies and melodies have instilled in me a sense of hope for the future, where I can continue a family legacy.…

The place I grew up in could be considered above average. I had my friends that I would see every day and my family back at home. However, everything that any of us did would be over the top in every way possible. This became especially evident when my family and I would begin to plan a party or travel, this improvement of activities would be known as the “Mexican Way”. To be more specific, my family and I turned a normal New Year’s Eve party into a colorful and explosive fiesta. At first it seemed normal, we bought all the fireworks, started getting all the food ready for the party, and all my cousins and uncles started to arrive at my house; but as soon as it got dark everything started to get out of hand. As the first bottle rockets went…

Have you ever been so sure of something that the simple consideration of the opposite seems to overwhelm you? I have been; or, I had been. Since the age of ten, I had considered myself bilingual. This course has given me an increasingly wide opportunity to acknowledge the fact that speaking a language does not necessarily mean I have sufficient tools to write in it. In fact, I have noticed many misconceptions, errors, and even some atrocities.…

I stumbled a bit during the conversation because I was trying to find the appropriate response for her questions. She sometimes helped me when she saw me struggling. Talking in a foreign tongue with a native speaker was actual really fun. Although I tripped and stumbled over my words sometimes, Roberta was very helpful and I feel like I gained more experience by actually going out and having a real conversation. It was really easy knowing what my response was going to be because even though I didn’t understand every single word in her replies or questions I got the general message. It was difficult trying to piece together a grammatically correct comprehendible sentence that answered the question in a way she could understand. It was hard trying to remember verbs and whether a noun was masculine or feminine. I sometimes had to just ask her how to say something. She was very patient and supportive with me. I feel like with more practice and if I were to go out more and use the Spanish I’m taught in the classroom outside, I would improve. In my opinion, real world situations are better teachers than just repeated something and having it imprinted on your brain. This experience was really fun and I would definitely support doing another assignment exactly like this or something similar that has to do with going out and using the Spanish you’ve learned in our…

One day, I was out with my family at a French bakery. As I opened the door, the sweet scent of baked goods entered my nostrils, an old man approached and he said thank you in a strong thick French accent. I asked the old man if he was French and he replied with “oui je suis français”( yes i'm French). I responded with “ Je ne suis pas français mais je peux parle français”( I'm not French but I can speak French) . His brown eyes widened and as his mouth slowly opened with shock, I gave him a small smile. He said he didn't expect to get a response in French and he asked if my parents were French I said no, my mom is from Mexico, so he asked how I knew French, then I explained that I take French in my high school. The old man said “Your French is excellent for you to not be a native speaker and you've developed the accent.”…

When I was growing up as a child I was always told stories from my parents of how growing up in Mexico was, I heard stories of family I never knew I had, and of a childhood I don’t even remember. I moved to the United States when I was 4 years old therefore I honestly don’t even remember what it was to be born in Mexico, to grow up there. I only remember the struggle of having to learn a new language for school and hating the fact that I had an accent and sometimes made fun of for it when I was young. When I was younger I only remember the stories that my mom told me of trips to zoo in Mexico, visiting the capitol, and even visiting an aunt in a village near a volcano. All these…

My writing history is all over the place. I took Honors English my eleventh grade year, and loved it but took AP English my senior year and hated it. Mr. Palmer, who taught honors, was my favorite English teacher. He let us write about whatever came to mind on Fridays, whether we were ranting about classes or just had a fun story to tell. My favorite part about him is that he actually taught me how to write. My AP teacher did not improve our writing but only critiqued it. In my opinion, you can always learn how to write better. Even with being in AP I wish she fixed my writing more than just giving me a grade. More than half our students failed the English exam and the national average was a 2 on a scale of 5. So, within the past year writing…

It’s always on the back of my mind, and resurfaces to my thoughts when I’m in any social setting regarding Spanish—my second language. I am 3/4 Puerto Rican and 1/4 European, though my pigment carried from the European side, as I have the typical blonde hair and blue eyes. My father was born in Puerto Rico and my mother, although being born here, her mother was Czechoslovakian and Polish, my mother’s father was born in Puerto Rico much like my own father. It always boggles me why I don’t look more Spanish due to the more Spanish heritage I contain. When people see me, they only see my pigment—white. They don’t see the Spanish part, supposedly, until I tell them; then they give me a “Right” or “I see it now” as if they’ve known all along.…

I lived in a household where everyone spoke Spanish. At three, I was speaking these long Spanish sentences but I was not proud. My sister, a year older than me, had already started school. She would come back to confuse my family. Ordinarily, my parents with the first years they spent in Florida soon caught up with the language. I would sit by the television and pound my heart out to Dora, where I soon asked my sister for help and she would help me. I would also go to my cousins help, I remember being in elementary school where I wanted to go to the park after but instead, her mom had us sitting on a bench for one hour learning how to fathom grammatical structures. Kids flailed their arms around the playground, while I dedicated that time for…

    How I Learned to Read

Finally the day came and it was time for me to go to school. I was scared; I did not know where I was, and I did not know a single word in English. There was no way my mom would stick me in an English classroom. They moved me to a Spanish one; there I had a more clear idea of what I was learning. The teacher was a sweet, calm lady; she had patience with my wiggly and off place writing, to this day I have not figured out whether she understood it or not. Once I learned my ABC’s here came the small words of animals and things like for example “oso” which means bear in Spanish. Learning to read and write seamed so boring. I had to sit down and do homework which required my attention, but I preferred to draw and play. Learning was torture; I would read very slowly, even when I tried to read those small picture books for small kids, I was useless by that time.…

For me, Spanish and my Mexican culture are my life. I identify myself more with Spanish than I do with English. I cannot go a day without speaking it. In my house that is all we speak, Spanish. Sometimes, with my sister, we tend to mix both Spanish and English when speaking to each other. With my parents though, it is strictly Spanish. Even when I am at work, I try to speak as much Spanish as I can with my coworkers, even if they do not understand me. I sometimes even gets ugly stares or remarks saying, “SPEAK ENGLISH.” I do not mind though, because I am not afraid to show my true colors.…

Flashback to about eight years earlier when I first began to learn the basics of this language so unfamiliar to me, but the comfort to many people living in the area of Richmond. Sitting in my fourth grade class, a woman came and begun to teach us general Spanish vocabulary: greetings, colors, and numbers. Each year after that I took Spanish, and in the years following I learned more in depth of the Spanish language and the culture in many Spanish speaking cultures.…
