Personal Narrative: My Volleyball Coach
A coach is way more than someone who teaches you about the sport you play, they teach you many life lessons that cannot be taught by anyone else, they are one of you best friends, and they are like family to you. A person that fits all of this is my volleyball coach Sarah. Sarah has had a huge role into shaping me into the person that I am today. She has had such a huge impact on my life since I began playing the game of volleyball.
A time with Sarah that I can remember most vividly was the last game of my senior year but more specifically, our last team meeting when we got back to the high school. This was a tough time for the whole team. The thing that she said there made the team all realize how important we all were to her, she said with

I am a strong believer that there are many lessons that cannot be taught off the court or field. Some of the many lessons that Sarah has been able to help me develop are how to be a strong leader, how to work hard, and how to be optimistic. First how to be a strong leader, I believe that Sarah had many leadership qualities that I was able to see and pick up through my volleyball career. Some of those qualities include, a positive attitude, hard working, confidence, and passion. Next she showed me what hard work really is, Sarah loves to have fun, she always is so happy and excited when she saw us, but she always knew when it was time to work. She was always able to push us all to work as hard as we could but she was also able to tell when it was time for a break. Finally she taught me how to be optimistic. She always tries to find the good in every situation; I think that her positive attitude ties in with this. Every game, tournament, or anything we went into she always wanted us to go in with a open mind and a positive attitude, she never wanted us to think to highly or lowly about ourselves, I think that this had a huge role in our success this …show more content…
I knew that she was a friend because I could trust her with absolutely anything, and she would give the best advice any time I needed it. Also she always loved hearing our stories, almost every practice began with us all giggling because of a funny story someone told, but she also knew when it was time to flip it around and be serious and work hard. But Sarah was more than just a friend, she, like any one else on the team, is like family. The team and coaches from this last season all have a very special bond that will never be broken.
Without Sarah I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Someone who teaches you so many valuable lessons is hard to come by, but when you do get the opportunity to meet someone like this it is extremely hard to let go of them. Coaches are more than just a teacher of a sport; they are a life long best friend and a teacher of much more valuable lessons that you will cherish and use for the rest of you

College sports are very fun to watch when they come on. Especially when the games or events are at the decisive moments. Me personally I love to watch college volleyball, because it helps me change the way I play. Samantha Seliger Swenson was born February 4, 1997 in Minnetonka, Minnesota to Vicki and Erik Seliger Swenson and she is one of my favorite collegiate volleyball players . When Sam was young she experienced what teamwork really was after watching her mom coach players that were working together and pushing each other to get better every day. Also when Sam was young she lost her Aunt Teri Lee who was murdered by her ex boyfriend. This came after the loss of her uncle who passed away a couple years earlier due to a car crash. These events really motivated her to work hard and be the best she could be. The Seliger Swensons added on to their household 4 orphan cousins as a result of the passings of her aunt and uncle. They had rooms full of beds in their house and Sam said “It felt there was just one big bed big because all the beds had been so close together.’’ It wasn’t long before Vicki’s High School team contacted a show that improves on houses. The tv show agreed and expanded their three room house to a seven room house with 5,600 square feet. That was big enough for all the kids and parents.…

Many coaches go through difficult times, from losing a match or a game, not having it go the way you wanted it to entirely, but one thing everyone knows is that all coaches put in 100% effort on trying to improve their team and strive them to do better every single day. Weather it's working one on one with a team mate, or working with the whole team, coaches put in the time in their day to help enhance others.…

From what I could see, the team had great team cohesion, and they seemed to be communicating well. However, this player is clearly on of team’s better players. I am just wondering what that does for the rest of the team. I know in my experience with dance, there was always that one dancer that was the “star.” There are just some people who are naturally good at what they do. Yes, they work hard, but there is something else there that aids in them excelling. In the dance, both high school and college, there are favorites among the teachers. I know, for myself, I would be sometimes envious of the attention they received, but then I took that energy to push and challenge myself to dance up to their level. I am interested to see how the other players view this one girl and how they may use this as a way to better themselves as players. In dance, my teacher always stressed the importance that you should stand next to someone or dance with someone better than you. That way it encourages you to be better. I figure for sports it can be the same sort of dynamic. There is always going to be someone better. As an athlete and performer, it is important to find the balance of looking up to someone but also validating your own attributes. That is why sports psychology is helpful. It can be a tool to help people find their role on the team, and how not to become too discourage or constantly compare yourself to others. Instead, find the positives in athletes’ performance while recognizing areas for…

She is the person that has helped me not only to become a better athlete, but also a better student. B.R. has made a huge impact on my life because I have become a better person because of her. She is one of the only coaches that I have ever had that genuinely cares what kind of people that her players are off of the court. She teaches us to be respectful and caring, while maintaining our grades in school. When I transferred to West at the beginning of my sophomore year, B.R. was the first person to welcome me. She helped me with the transition and made me feel at home with the team. She has also been very supportive with me and some of the health problems that I have had. I have been having knee and joint pain for the past two years and was recently diagnosed with Idiopathic Rheumatoid Arthritis. The process to finding a diagnoses was a long one, but B.R. was there for me through the whole thing. She was always the first person to ask how everything was going and how I was…

During the last track season, he placed me in a long distance race that I didn’t think I could do. I tried to talk him out of putting me into it, but he wouldn’t budge. When it came time for the race, I could see that he believed in me even though I didn’t believe in myself. In the end, I did better in the race that I thought I would. I was very thankful for Coach’s encouragement and support. He also has been a coach for many years and will continue being a coach. He loves his job as a coach and a teacher and is very good at it.…

Playing CBAA for nine years has taught me so many values that I carry throughout my life now. With many years of league experience behind me, I learned from several great coaches how to think quickly and play not for myself, but for my team. I also saw that a good basketball team communicates well and learned that in doing so, everyone on the team can play well. With these skills I also learned I can work well with others in all types of settings, such as my job as a barista and my volunteer work as a National Honors Society member . I have also been taught how to be realistic but yet optimistic.. Not everyone, including myself, is a star player, and improving in itself is an accomplishment that we all should want to achieve.…

My sister played Cross Country, Basketball, Track, and Softball. Being in the Piña family meant two things: doing well in school and playing multiple sports. Although it wasn’t easy at first, it was a part of my high school experience which also gave me great friends. Before entering my freshman year I did summer workouts with the cross country team that would become the State Champion cross country team later that year. After we won my freshman year, I knew that I wanted to be a part of a team that could succeed. So I worked hard and eventually became on the State Team my junior year. I also worked hard in Soccer, Baseball, and…

The summer was going great. The trip to West Virginia, College coaches like me, they talked to me about playing for them, and this was also only my junior year and at the end of the year I was the number 1 on the team in pitching stats. When the season began, we did not have a coach to lead us, so we practiced apace with the Varsity squad. A few weeks into the season, the Varsity coach found us a mentor that would lead us. As a few more weeks went by, our coach started picking up on more activities, which was too much for her to handle so she left, and we were once again without a coach. The team began to fall apart and it became very stressful for all of us. After the first three months of cheering, we had lost 8 girls on the team. Throughout those three months, my…

Twenty years ago she came into my life and because of her I am a better person. If not for her I never would have been so dedicated and excited to play sports. Thanks to Aim my life revolved around sports and this allowed me to release my frustrations and be a part of team. She once said to me “Teddy your team is an extension of your family and family is all any of us have.” She was the best member any family could ever have and I am honored to call her my aunt. Before she officially became my aunt she was my mentor, my coach and my biggest fan. From her I learned to take pride in my actions, to do my best and to never take people for granted. One time she took me to one of our many wrestling meets and I had to wrestle a girl. I was 13 years old and had been raised to never hurt a female. The girl beat me by points because I couldn’t go all out and I was extremely embarrassed. She consoled me and assured me that it was just a fluke. Then later that day I had to face the…

Have you ever imagined not having a coach for your sports team? Or why your coach is so successful? Even though they are very demanding, they’re essential for any team’s success. “I demand a lot out of my players, but we have fun and I give them room to learn and make mistakes,” said Coach Mike Bates. They provide structure and are the heart and souls of each team. Coaches have to love the game. The team reflects the coach, if he’s successful so will you be. The coach needs to be disciplined and teach the fundamentals of the game. They should instill moral values into the team.…
