Personal Narrative: My Veterinarian Career
“C-cat,” I mumbled out as a toddler. According to my mother, cat was my first spoken word. If you know anything about me, you would know that I love animals. When I was about six years old, I realized I wanted to become a veterinarian. At the age of nine, I took a huge step into my veterinarian career. I started my most fulfilling 4-H project, which was showing Boer goats. Showing goats gave me the opportunity to learn the different phases of taking care of animals. I have always been a passionate person, when it comes to my family, my studies and my community. When I set my mind to it, I always get the job done. My religion, my family, and my education are most important to me. God is the head of my life; I would not be here, if it was not

If we had to pursue one of the first ten occupations we had ever imagined being as a child then I can guarantee you that I Veterinary Assistant wouldn’t have made the cut. As a child I was allergic to cats and afraid of most animals. With time I grew out of my allergies and became exposed to more animals to reduce the fear. A cold sweat began to bead at the base of my neck as I urged the muscles in my knee to work their way through the set of squats my physical therapist had asked me to perform. My appointment was scheduled at seven in the morning, but already I could feel the adrenaline rushing up and down my spine as I watched the sun rise over the waking city through the large paneled windows of the gym. Sharp pain shot up the inside of my right knee as I slowly lowered myself, making it difficult to continue the squats. As I pushed the muscles in my knee to lower myself further, I gazed intently at the wall in front of me for inspiration. A quote I had learned to cherish over time as my personal mantra adorned the wall, reading, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." With these powerful words lodged into the back of my mind, I dropped my body into an even lower squat and continued to complete the set with strong determination to get back to soccer, the sport…

There I was laying on the field, during the second half of my football game, tossing and turning as I held my right shoulder in agonizing pain. I looked up only to see the trainer looking down at me with a concerned look. “What’s wrong?” he asked. Repeatedly I tapped my shoulder as I was struggling to get the words out. He helped me up and walked me back to the sideline. I waited for what seemed like hours for the game to end. A few days later, I went to a local doctor to get an X-ray. The doctor told me that there was nothing wrong and that the pain should subside in a couple of days, and it did. Later in the season as I went in for a tackle, I felt my shoulder pop. Immediately I was in pain and thought to myself, “ It happened again.” This…
