Personal Narrative: My Trip To Catawba Valley Medical Center
Hospital Internship: Eight hours a week I travel to Catawba Valley Medical Center where I shadow nurses in the oncology unit. Thus far in my internship I have been given a first hand look into the various jobs that make up the oncology department, how medications are administered and what their purposes are, patient care techniques, etc. This internship has not only allowed me to explore my intense interest for the study of oncology but radiology as well seeing as how I am able to rotate between the two units depending on the day. I have also gained an extensive knowledge through observations at the infusion center located downstairs when I travel with patients who are receiving treatment.

Beta Club is an academic based club for students who meet proper expectations set for GPA’s and character. In this club we raise money for the school and participate in a plethora of community service activities. HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) is an organization committed to the knowledge of all things medical. In this club we host blood drives and other community events, some of which help fund our trips that we take to compete in district level competitions based on our choice of medical category that we individually specialize in. HOPE 4 A CURE is a club I specifically admire because we are constantly raising money for deserving causes that we get to witness change lives. For example, a young boy that goes to my church who suffers from random seizures and was in need of funds, this club helped raise a portion of the money that would allow him to get the proper treatment he needed at a research facility in Boston, Massachusetts. Lastly, I am a part of the Math Club; our main objective in this club is to raise enough money to provide three seniors in the club with scholarships based on the amount of money raised. The seniors chosen are based off of the need of financial aid and their overall character. Aside from this, the club also provides an environment where people with a common love for math can come together and learn more about

Never have I woken up faster than getting a phone call at 1am saying, “I need you STAT to H4104!” Racing from the call room to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, I had a million thoughts running through my head. Why is the RN calling me STAT? Is the patient coding? Is the intra-aortic balloon pump I am responsible for not functioning? When I arrive, the patient’s pressures were spiraling downward and the surgeon said he must go back down for surgery. Adrenaline pumping through my veins, I realized this was not an emergency simulation I had been taught – this was real. As soon as we reach the OR, the patient went asystole. Immediately, anesthesia started injecting medications, the OR staff lined up to do compressions and I managed the balloon pump; we…

The moment I woke up from my surgery I remember my surgeon say that "everything thing went well, that the gallbladder came out fine with no complications." She must have turned to my mom because she had said that she wanted me to stay overnight to monitor me, crazy thing was is that I was a actually still pretty drugged up, the room was a little fuzzy my mouth had a weird dry nasty taste inside of it that I really can't put my tongue to, they wouldn't even give me water right away As I looked down i wasn't in the baggy tan robe gown any more that they had given me when i had first arrived at devos children's hospital. I looked down at my stomach i had three little cuts along my side covered in little butterfly stitches and…

Sounds pretty similar to the agency I work for but it sounds like you had a lot more training then we did. Oddly, I was never asked or told to shadow anyone however, I did have a few nurses shadow me. I asked these nurses about it and they told me they weren’t getting paid for their time and I thought that was a little bizarre. I’m guessing that many agencies do not pay people for training after hearing your experience was similar to…

At first glance, it seems like a club that would not get much traction and quickly fizzle out. On the contrary, the club now meets regularly and has an academic advisor. The girl has raised awareness for the destruction of not only duck habitats, but other endangered animals. The club even has a growing number of involved members, including myself. Like this, OSU has so many unique clubs; pizza club, knitting club, etc. These clubs enrich the experience the university offers, and I hope to facilitate them as an alumnus so future students can have the one of a kind experience I am blessed to…

    The History Of Beta

The year of 1934 was the year that saw many exciting events and changes throughout the world… The Dionne sisters (the first quintuplets to survive birth) were born in Canada, The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Detroit Lions for the World Series, Vitamin K was discovered by Henrik Dam, and a first class stamp cost $0.03, but the most exciting event by far happened when the National Beta Club began as the dream of Dr. John W. Harris, a professor at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. Dr. Harris conceived an organization that would promote good character, leadership, get students involved in service work, and award academic achievement. Thus, at Landrum High School in Landrum, S.C., the first chapter of The National Beta Club started with 15 members. Formation of the club at Landrum was followed by the starting of eight others in South Carolina before the end of 1934. By the end of the following year there were 75 Beta Clubs in four states. As people got inspired by the Beta Club, endorsements continued to flow, and the Beta Club continued to expand. At the end of 1935 Dr. Harris had hit upon an idea whose time had come and the acceptance of The National Beta…

Walking into work I smell the aromas of a nursing home. I hear the sounds of wheel chairs and walkers scraping against the hard wood surface. As I walk to station one, I stop by the break room to store my food. The room is full of people charting the prior shift. Walking out of the room, I continue to station one. Finding the cork board with the neon green paper, I see what hall I am working. There is only my name and one other on spring hall. I know it is going to be a rough night; but at the end, I will remember my goal, which is helping others.…

I created the Humanitarian Club to promote global issues in my school and also to promote Special Education inclusion. After drafting a proposal, I went through my school's principal and got approval to submit it to the school board. My club got approved by the school board and ever since then, we've made a huge impact on the community. Last year we made 118 Operation Christmas boxes that were sent around the world. Some other projects include promoting inclusion with our Special Ed children by participating in Special Olympics sporting events, philanthropy work for community improvements such as a much needed guardrail to prevent more deaths, and animal welfare events to promote spaying and neutering. The club has benefited the Special Education…

The Betances scholarship is based on the ideals of community service and betterment of the world as a whole. I myself share parallel interests which have been reflected in my activities since high school and even up until present day. In high school I worked for organizations such as Heroes and Cool Kids and Tilly’s Kids. Heroes and Cool Kids is designed for older people like me to empower young children to live a life as leaders. The organization Tilly’s Kids, also provided charity in the form of gifts and clothes during our Christmas VIsit. In college I joined the fraternity Pi Kappa Phi. Through this organization I have been able to support our yet another philanthropy the Ability Experience. This program is Pi Kappa Phi’s national philanthropy…
