Personal Narrative: My Strengths Of English 106-H
Overall, my experience taking English 106-H was fulfilled and I truly enjoyed my time in class. What were once weaknesses, slowly, but surely became strengths. Thus, it was through my weaknesses that helped me develop my writing skills, making me a stronger writer. Through free writing, word traps, and ideas of my own, I was able to implement those strategies into my writing. Nevertheless, I have reached my goal, but still will continue to strive for even stronger writing through out all of my courses at Lycoming College.

Last year in 6th I had a teacher who taught literacy. She impacted me when I had her. She made me love literacy more than I use to. I learned more about commas, exclamation, and stuff like that. Since I knew what to do, I could probably eventually publish one of my stories. She also had made me motivated to make more stories. I had not made stories like I thought I was when I was in 5th grade. I did not feel motivated like I was in 5th grade. And I used to love making these stories. I did not feel motivated anymore like I use to. I would usually get compliments for making my stories and that motivated me, but I did not have anyone to help me so I did not feel motivated. Until I made my first story that year. I gave it to a lot of people,…

Long wide roads that seemed to go on endlessly, small houses reflecting the neighborhood, steel fences losing its touch for it was beginning to rust, tall palm trees swaying back and forth, and a black broken down Toyota parked near the pavement of a butterscotch house. Right around the corner is where you’d lay eyes on Thomas Jefferson Middle School. As I walk into unfamiliar building and know nothing about the culture and language a huge chill came over me, which I have never felt before. Something finally hit me I was in school in America. I walked in my first English class and sat there in a full panic mode but pretended I knew what I am doing. I heard a loud noise that said “Alright class take out your notebook and write a paragraph about your winter break”. Although I can understand some English words I had no idea how I was going to do…

Throughout my English writing journey I was able to learn many different techniques different teachers or professors in an essay. Since middle school, I remember my English teacher teaching me how to write an essay and the rule towards it. She would always never use “In this essay, I will be talking about” well every teacher I had kept reminding me not to do that. Over the years new methods of a standard essay will be taught. The standard essay would be MLA, Times New Roman, 12 pt, double spaced, 5 paragraphs, an introduction and conclusion. As years went by, and I got older. My teachers would expect me to have a thesis statement, and three main points. That would be what I had difficulty. As a native Spanish speaker, and with English being…

During my time at Conroe High, I have been nothing but content, and upon being asked about a rule to be removed or editing, I had to think in a larger scale. Although my peers would likely call for something menial, such as dress code regulations to be removed, what I would call for is a bit more extreme. I would request the complete reorganization and separation of the English department, and the subsequent removal or replacement of the English credit requirement to graduate, because, while advanced English classes are an enrichment of the mind and perspective, they, nor their more basic counterparts - which are little more than busy work, are a unique or essential part of a legitimate high school major.…

Growing up in a hispanic household a significant challenge that I have faced would be the language barrier I have between speaking Spanish and English. The first language that I was ever taught was Spanish because it was what my parents and my whole family spoke. I began to learn English at a young age when I started school, but it was quite a hard transition to suddenly have to learn a new language. When I was in elementary school, I would have trouble with my writing skills and being able to read fluently. I began to make progress when I would go to after school programs and receive support from my teachers. Although I am now able to speak English fairly well, there are still some times where I struggle in my classes because I don't always…

The excerpt “My English Journey” from the book New Voices by student writers is about a young girl who moved to the United States to study. The story begins as she explains the 2+2 program they had at her school back in China. This program allowed her to study in the United States for two years. Although all of her friends didn’t like the idea of her moving to the United States to finish college, she was excited to come and learn about the culture and new setting. Her friends warned her about the new language and how she’d have to adapt in many ways she wouldn’t be too comfortable with. Although she was a bit worried about the new language and nervous about understanding her assignments she knew that this would be a great learning experience and she was up for it. She loves to challenge herself.…
