I was in sports for my whole life, cheerleading specifically. I was always with my team, staying after school, and going to games. After I started high school though things changed cheer became a lot less about your skill level and a lot more about who you knew and how well you could suck up to the coach. The coach of the cheer team hated me she would set me aside from all the other girls and constantly poke fun at me and pick out my short comings. I would go home from practice everyday and cry to my mom. I would have horrible anxiety about going to practice and pretty soon everything that happened at cheer became my fault. I knew I was a pretty good cheerleader and constantly tried my hardest. For some reason it still wasn’t good enough. I

Most people say cheerleading is not a sport, but to me it is. It all began when I was four years old and my mom signed me up to cheer for the Harrisburg Packers. I was nervous at first, but then it turned out to be a lot of fun. Everyone on the team was tall except for me and one other girl. Her name was Tatum. The first thing I thought was that I was going to get picked on by all the other girls because I was so little and shy, but it turned out to be totally different. As the years progressed…

Cheerleading Challenges People have always told me to follow my dreams. We hear that again and again, day after day, but most people never listen. Dreams may seem so far out of reach, but if they aren’t scary, they aren’t big enough. I constantly wrote down my dreams because they were frequently changing. One dream of mine was always recurring; It was to be a cheerleader. It bothered me that Paynesville schools made the decision to cancel its cheerleading program because I knew there were a lot…

almost taken in by the sweet warm air. The room was filled with the red cheer mats. It was a cold, foggy day, mid October. I slipped off my fuzzy light brown boots, and put on my bright white, spotless cheer shoes. I looked around at all the other girls, and took a deep breath. I stood up, stepping onto the vibrant red cheer mats, ready to work hard. With the way my day was going so far, I knew it was going to be an interesting tumbling practice. I most always looked forward to tumbling practice…

For the past four years, I’ve been captain of my all-star cheerleading team. My teammates are a diverse group of girls, ranging from ten to seventeen years old. Working with a large age group has made me a more patient person. It takes more time and effort to answer a ten-year-old’s question, than a question from a fifteen or sixteen-year-old. I also must be willing to take my time when explaining parts of routines, because everyone learns and understands at different speeds and levels. Along with…

Throughout my life I have been taught many things; however, there's something that has remained close to me. "To the world, you may be an individual, but to an individual, you may be the world." When connecting this statement to my personal background story that is so essential to my identity, it gives me the encouragement to pursue my studies in the field of biology by researching and advocating in urban communities as a doctor of osteopathy. It was the heart wrenching, moving experience with my beloved…
