Personal Narrative: My Social Media Cleanse
After spending the past week hustling to complete High School applications all the while studying for my midterms, this essay prompt seemed to come at the perfect time. I figured, that no access to social media for the next three days would allow me extra time to buckle down and get things done. Although I found it challenging at times, I noticed three large changes and I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

The first day of my cleanse I made an eye opening self-discovery. The refreshing feeling of switching up my daily routine and trying something new had changed me. The most noticeable and immediate change was my happiness. I can't quite explain the emotional burden that social media has on me, however, I now understand that it’s especially easy to get caught up in the glitz and the glam of other peoples lifestyles and I often started comparing it to my own. After seeing pictures of people putting their mark on the world, and seeing new places. Often times I felt unsatisfied with how I was spending my time, and often blamed my environment for not being more stimulating. As cool as it is to share images from recent travels and adventures, I believe that it’s just as important to share images of your not so ‘picture perfect’ life because that is what truly makes us human.

The first thing that popped into my head was my sleep schedule. Before bed time I usually try to turn my phone on silent mode so that I have time to slow down a bit, however, that rarely ends up happening. By not having the option to send a couple Snapchats or spend a few minutes scrolling through Instagram I found myself not only going to bed earlier but I also noticed that I woke up happy and feeling more well rested. This was a huge benefit because for me sleep plays a huge role in my emotional health and feeling confident to start my

I am Janelle Bautista, a college freshman, and I do not know what I am doing right now. Each year, my English teachers would give various essays, and every time the whole class had no clue what to write. Everyone would all stare at the computer screen blankly, and ponder as to where to start. However, once an idea sparks, the first sentence turns into a paragraph then it finally becomes pages long. Everyone can stare at the screen forever, but the essay will not be done unless you start writing, just like college, and life. However, life will continue whether the first step is taken or not. College and life are a long essays waiting to be written. Although college benefits those who obtain a degree, the only question that remains is what to…

My project is an original song that I wrote using only the electric guitar. The song begins with three parts singing together. The first of these parts is the echoing bass notes of D and G, driving the interval of a perfect fourth. The second is a muted, rhythmic line that consists of four notes and repeats on the beat. The third is simply a high F# played using the technique of harmonics and highly effected by reverb. These three parts play together on a loop throughout the entire piece, and represent the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. There is no real defining start to these parts, which represents the idea of a God without beginning. What is played thereafter (what might be considered the melody)…

Sample College Admissions Essays We have prepared this handout of actual essays written by current Harvard students who attended secondary schools in the UK (with names changed for anonymity) in order to provide some guidance to schools and applicants. Because the university admissions processes in the US and the UK are markedly different, we have received requests for some sample essays and tips for writing them and hope they will be helpful. Here is the official description of the personal essay requirement: Please write an essay (250 words minimum) on a topic of your choice or on one of the options listed below. This personal essay helps us become acquainted with you as a person and student, apart from courses, grades, test scores, and other objective data. It will also demonstrate your ability to organize your thoughts and express yourself. 1. Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you. 2. Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you. 3. Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence. 4. Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence. 5. A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you. 6. Topic of your choice. Your essay for a US university might be the same one you would write for the UCAS system, but perhaps not. We are interested in your academic successes and future plans, but also want to understand what makes you tick as a person. What are your hopes, dreams and fears? Our advice is to think of two or…

He displays the purpose of the essay with facts and many useful comparisons such as “reporting substantial increases in applications” and “schools have a larger, more competitive application pool… kids are taking spots at universities that they may, in fact, have little to no interest in”. This information is significant and logical. It captures the sympathetic attention of the audience, a want to help these students. However, when he says, “the average [schools applied to] from people I’ve talked to seems to be around 10, though many I know have applied to upward of 16,” the number of people he talked to needs to be clarified. Also additional research needs to be done to make sure he is representing the larger group of college applicants.…

The prompt states that some students have a background that is so integral in their person it would be heinous to leave it completely out of the application. For me, this part of my identity is my schooling. Years ago, as a small 8th Grader, I was given a big choice, one that would shape my future from then on. I was given the option of leaving traditional schooling to instead join a school with a completely different culture. This school was New Technology High School. Obviously I decided to go, otherwise I wouldn’t be writing this essay, and it was honestly a life changing decision. New Tech was different, and it was a perfect fit for me. I have grown so much over the past four years, and the skills and applications I have acquired will be…

Growing up, I had the thought in my mind how I would love to go to college one day and become what I wanted. This thought came to me when i was in middle school. Its not as hard as he thinks , and its not as easy either. While telling him my plans he really gave me more insight on what i wanted to do later in life. This will be the second time I make one of these essays and as a person who has experienced an AP course I am thrilled to express what I have accomplished and the objectives I want to attain for my future in AP. Before entering my first AP Class there was only a feeling of fright and a part of me was ready to bail so I could run back to the normal classes. However, now that I look back I am glad that I did not run away. Due to the Pre-AP and AP course that is offered by the school I was capable of achieving more than I could have ever imagined. For example, the vocabulary I utilize is way more extensive and my knowledge in English and Spanish grammar has increased for the better. Not only that, but values like responsibility and assertiveness have played an important role in AP course because of the high intellectuality and sophistication in them. My experience in AP this year has aided me to grow intellectually and…

11:20 PM found me in front of a glowing computer screen yet again. The essay was assigned weeks ago, but I was cursed with the bad habit of procrastinating. I spent hours everyday browsing statuses on Facebook, watching videos on YouTube, and reading tweets on Twitter; procrastination had become a lifestyle. I had an essay due tonight at 11:59 PM and I had been staring blankly at the empty page, praying for any inspiration to come to me.…

High school just wasn’t for me. High school just isn’t for a lot of people, but adult society has its grasp on today’s youth, trying to manipulate them to conform to whatever they think is an acceptable teenager. They need to let it go. Although today’s teenagers are not as experienced in the ways of life, they among the smartest people in the world. Teenagers should be educated on what rights they have and how they can use them to their advantage. In my personal experience, I found a way around the system, and I believe everyone can. Because when it comes down to it, you don’t always have to choose the path that is laid out in front of you. There are other options.…
