Personal Narrative: My Service Learning Experience
Participating in this event with all of my peers allowed me to feel more connected with my community. I was able to take a break from the everyday routine of education in the classroom and apply the values I have learned to other individuals. I was assigned to work with a group of second graders with building a mission from a wide assortment of recyclables. Not being provided with ready materials, each individual of the group had his or her own idea on how to recreate each structure. Rather than allowing the disagreements to hinder our group’s achievements, I explained to the students how only teamwork will result in success. To solve their contrasting ideas, I guided the students through making compromises. With a plan of action established, we worked as a well-rounded team to efficiently complete our mission. …show more content…
Whether it be through learning a new card game or making other kids laugh with corny jokes, I felt as if I had connected and formed an inimitable bond with the kids at Resurrection Catholic School. Although my service learning day look play at the beginning of March, I have not forgotten my experience. Even when faced with difficulties, I refused to offer any less than my all. Being given this opportunity to give back to the community allowed me to gain new insight and appreciate the service from others more than

My personal mission statement is to be the best that I can be and work hard to help others be the best they can be. This statement is important to me because I have always found that I am at my best when I am helping people, whether its helping people at my job or at the grocery store. There are many things that fall into place with that, which to me, mainly includes education, because I am a student and I work in a college where I work with students and I listen to their problems and relate to them. So education is very important in general, but to me Community and Industry Education is very important and important to a lot of people. First off I have attended Tarrant County College and I have gained so much from that experience. I have gained…

My next solution came from what we have discussed this week which is the “Hawthorne studies”. I remember the quote that my classmate Hugh had posted: “If everyone is special, then no one is”. We may be able to use positive recognition and remove the negative feelings towards each other. For instance, when the candidates are chosen, I would phrase it as “You three are handpicked from hundreds of candidate. We feel that only you guys are qualified to make this mission succeed. I believe by making them feel that they are the only ones that can accomplish this goal, they will work as hard as they can to make their groups come together. This will eliminate the difference they feel towards each other’s believes and also expand into trying to convince others to work together as well. As more people get on board with the idea, we can form sub teams under the leaders of the team and inform them also that they will now be the “special” bunch that need to spread the word among the public about how important it is to be part of this project and make it work. This will eventually have a ripple effect. The pro about this project is that it will bring people together and eliminate the differences. The cons would be that if anyone realizes that they are not “special” and everyone is “special” , then this effect will fade. Therefore, other incentives can be added which is discussed…

One of the first interact club events I took charge of organizing involved reading to kids at an underprivileged elementary school. I served as the role model for a large group of curious young students and gained a more insightful perspective of the substantial impact that my volunteer work actually has on the community. Reading to kids is one example of an Interact event that influenced me into becoming a more effective communicator with different types of learners.…

Kathy, it appears you have gained valuable knowledge and learning experiences during your practicum internship thus far. Your review of goals and objectives are attributes that will facilitate further development of your leadership skills, how exciting! The insight that you provided through the nurse/physician communication and collaboration seminar was valuable knowledge for me to reflect upon in my leadership development. The remaining goals and objectives that you have outlined in order to meet the course concepts and finalization of practicum experience will provide additional attributes and skills to foster your journey in attaining leadership growth. This past Summer, as part of my social justice service hour requirement, I volunteered as a big buddy at the Miracle League of Green Bay.The Miracle League is a program that allows children and teens with a disability to play baseball. A big buddy helps one of the players run the bases and hit the ball. Every week you play a different team but have the same buddy. As a big buddy it is also your job to communicate with the player and get to know more about them. My favorite part of this experience was getting to know my player. My player (name), was an eleven year old boy. When I first met him I thought it was going to be hard to relate or talk to him however, as the season went on I realized I was totally wrong. I asked him about what interested…

I have the experience of volunteering for two times. Both schools that I went to are very poor school as most of students come from neighbor countries such as Myanmar and Cambodia, whom their parents immigrate illegally to Thailand for working opportunity. Also the school director tries to help this children by give them opportunity to study without tuitions fee, which is make financial support from the government is not enough. Therefore, my friends and I went to give the necessary stuffs such as sport facilities and some amount of money that my friends and I did the donation from kind-hearted people. We also educated them in various topics such as teach them English daily use sentences and basic economics in term of how to saving. The reason that I choose to teach them how to saving is I found that their family financial status is not good, so it is necessary for them to use money correctly and make sure that they will not overspending.…

The service that I did with the poor was at St. Vincent De Paul. I took the bus with a friend after school on a random Thursday with Ms. Reuter driving the bus, which I didn’t expect her to know how to do at all. It was my first time working there, because I had only worked at the distribution center the year before for confirmation. When we arrived we all signed in and they put the people who had been there before in their normal locations. My friend and I got split up, with me in charge of sorting all of the donated canned foods and my friend went over to move pallets around. While I was working with one of the staff there, I made friends with some freshmen that were also working with me. They started calling me silly names like “broth boy” because at some point I got in charge of sorting canned broths.…
