Personal Narrative: My Reflection
I've always prided myself on my ability to adapt. Being optimistic and working with the cards I've been dealt, has always been my strong point. When life throws something at you knowing how to adapt to it is your best option and it affects the way you look at life.
I remember the exact day I first realized something was wrong. I was on the train with friends on our way to a soccer game and my shoulder started to ache. I thought it was just from carrying my heavy bag, or some dance related injury that I could just brush off like I always do. When my pain didn't go away after 3 days, my mother decided to take me to the doctor. That's when I found out I had tendinitis in my left shoulder.

Coincidentally, in dance we were learning about anatomy and Kinesiology. Although, I was injured my teacher enjoyed the fact that I could relate what were learning to what was happening within my body. I enjoyed learning about nutrition, muscles, bones and how they affect the human body. This class opened my eyes to how different injuries require different healing methods. Anatomy and kinesiology intrigued me because the human body always tries its best to heal itself. I loved learning about different exercises and treatments that help the human body.

It was more mentally vexing that I couldn't always do what I wanted because of the inflammation, but it allowed me to become a physically stronger person in the long run. Working through the strain of tendonitis has made me look at recovery differently. The reason I desire to be a physical therapist for athletes is because I believe I can relate to what athletes will be going through, due to my personal experience with this injury. I now understand the limitations of an injury and how to work yourself back to a point where you can continue to participate in what you love. Tendinitis has held me back in one way but I wouldn't allow it to deter me from my

Treatment for supraspinatus tendonitis involves three phases of physical therapy: the acute phase, recovery phase, and maintenance phase. During the acute phase, relieving pain and inflammation by resting and avoiding all activities that make the situation worst is important. At the same time, this is also the phase where you perform a range of motion exercises to strengthen your muscular function. An example of a range of motion exercise is pendulum exercises, which is where you lean over with your good arm supported by a table or chair, relaxing your painful arm by hanging it straight down then you slowly swing the arm that is hanging down. During the recovery phase, is when you work to regain your all your movements without any difficulty by performing active exercises such as pushups. During the maintenance phase, all you have to do is continue exercising and maintaining a strong muscular endurance so that supraspinatus tendonitis does not occur again. If physical therapy involving those three phrases does not work after three months, your doctor might offer to injection of steroids into your shoulder joint to help relieve inflammation. If steroids injection does not work either, arthroscopic surgery to repair your injury is recommended. Usually sixty to ninety percent of people who…

Rodolfo Costa once said; “Cultivate an optimistic mind, use your imagination, always consider alternatives, and dare to believe that you can make possible what others think is impossible” (Goodreads). Remaining positive has always held an important role in my life. I strive to find positives in every negative situation, and remember that I can always learn something from it. Sometimes changing the way you view a situation can make all the difference. Even through times where I have had every reason to give up, I have chosen to keep a positive attitude. I have found that when I decide to do this, it makes me significantly happier, and I take much more away from the situation.…

I someday want to work as an occupational therapist. Occupational therapy (OT) as a field, focuses on a variety of physical and functional impairments. Occupational therapists and assistants work with their consumers to help them to regain functionality to be able to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, getting dressed, eating, etc. The physiology of exercise plays a huge role in therapy and is definitely incorporated into therapy sessions. One main component of OT intervention is upper-body strengthening. Strengthening exercises and activities are performed to improve the performance of weakened muscles. In conjunction with traditional weighted exercises, occupational therapists also use therapeutic activities.…

I enjoyed watching the process of x-rays and helping patients with injuries, although taking x-rays were very painful. I sprained my ankle when I was fifteen. This really put my soccer career on hold while I was recovering and training to get the strength back in my ankle. This started my interest in Physical Therapy. I was in a horrible car accident with a city bus when I was eight years old. I had bitten my lip open and had cuts in my head and hands from shattered glass. I also came out of this with a concussion. This made me very cautious of most things and made me realize life is very short. I had surgery on my lip to remove some of the extra scar tissue. These steps to get me back on my feet were easy, thanks to all of the doctors, nurses and other people who work in Health Care that took care of me. I was also able to volunteer at the ASPCA. It was a great opportunity and I’m glad my friend told me about it. Working and playing with…

3.14159265 or pi, e=mc2 is the language of nerds. Albert, Frank, George know this language all too well. Albert is a thin, pasty, white fellow with brown hair that was always combed over to one side of is head and big thick black glasses. Albert always thought that he was the smartest only because he had the same first name as Albert Einstein. George was the complete opposite of Albert. He was a rather large fourteen year old boy with uncontrollable curly hair that molded into an afro. Then there is me, Frank, I am just your average guy. I am content with jeans and a t-shirt. You might be wondering how us three became such great friends. Well, we have been neighbors since we were born so it was bound to happen sometime.…

At the age of twenty-one, I thought I knew it all. I thought I had life figured out. Because I had fought through and overcome a good amount of obstacles throughout my life thus far, I felt as though I had a good sense of what the world was about. I couldn’t have been more wrong. My life changed forever on a random, seemingly normal afternoon. My secure sense of how things were, and how I expected things to continue, was shattered. All it took was one moment; in one instant, everything changed. Dr. Judith Rich refers to this as a “Sputnik moment.’ She defines a sputnik moment as, “events that jar our sense of reality.” These moments can be large or small, and they change the way one feels about reality. My sputnik moment changed my sense of purpose and understanding of life.…

Throughout my life thus far, I have ultimately learned from experience that everything happens for a reason, a sole reason that has shaped my journey to contribute to my greater-good. This reason is intuitive, not to be specifically named but to be subconsciously present within the unlimited boundaries of my mind. Recently, I have faced the most defining moment in my entire life, and the early process of reasoning for this event is left for me to belabor.…

My brother and I continued to sprint through the dark, damp streets. Puddles splashed under our feet making eerie echoes. We passed closed shops and empty parking lots. It seemed like I wouldn’t even have nightmares as creepy as what I was walking through. It was darker than usual. A unearthly feeling was in the air. No one was around, which was normal because it was almost midnight, but it felt different. “Maybe I’m just in a bad mood,” I whispered to myself. School had proved to be a tragedy yet again. I just couldn’t get my mind off Ella. I didn’t even like going near the woods ever since… “Come on, we’re going to be late!” my brother interrupted. I had no idea those would be the last words my brother ever said.…

“Vroom, Vroom, Vroom!” All I could hear was the sound of the car engine. I had been awakened at 5:30 a.m. thinking I was standing on the center of a highway, but really it was the fully loaded car. Today was the day I’ve been waiting for all year long. I felt nervous and scared, but at the same time I was jumping up and down higher than a frog could jump. I was only eight years old the summer of going into fourth grade. I had no idea what to expect. I didn’t know if I was going to like it, love it, hate it or really enjoy it. My two older sisters, Alynn and Marissa were coming with me for another memorable summer. It was Marissa’s last summer of being a camper there after six years and it was Alynn’s fourth summer. My sisters and parents kept repeatedly telling me I would have the summer of my life. I threw on my green and white clothing to show my camp spirit and ran down the stairs ready to leave the house and head to the airport.…

I take a seat on the cold stone bench of the arena. The rumble of the crowd fades into my head; the thick July air makes it hard to breathe. It is not my fight but my nerves acts as if it is, shaking in anticipation and fear. The competitors take their places on opposing ends of the field. I'm too far away to see their faces behind their masks but I can feel the adrenaline flow through my body and know that it doesn’t compare to what they must be feeling; knowing that this could be their last minutes alive. I wonder what they did to deserve this. Was it a crime of vengeance that earned them a spot in this place; or were they just an innocent slave that isn’t entitled to this harsh of sentence? One gladiator charges forward…

Beginning at the end of 9th grade to the middle of 11th I could not stop writing. Everything from conversations at the dinner table to dreams in the middle of the night inspired me. At the start of the second semester of 11th grade, however, I started writing less and hated everything that came on the page. As an attempt to inspire myself I read through 600 conversations, stories, and story ideas I had written from that period. Amazed by the beautiful sentences I had written, but I tried to understand what had happened within those few months. I realized that that period in my life was before the stress of college applications when my life was just me, my courses, and my writing. For the sake of my writing, I knew I needed to attend a school…

I would like to tell you about one of the funniest moments in my life. I was around fourteen or fifteen at the time. I had a friend by the name of Antione who was my best friend.
