Personal Narrative: My Personal Obstacles In My Life
Everyone in life will have their own personal obstacles they will have to face in life. Some people will mentally shut down and give up when faced with a challenge. Others will take their challenges and use them to better themselves. The obstacles that I have faced in my life have never hit me harder than they have these past few months. This being my senior year, I always expected it to be the most laid back and relaxing year of my high school career. When in fact I set myself up for one of the biggest challenges of my life so far, by signing up for multiple online college classes, helping out with activities all over the school, and playing football for the first time since freshman year. Although, under all this immense pressure, this is where my true colors came out. I didn’t stop working to my full potential, …show more content…
But then, one varsity football game on a Friday night I have been hit in the leg with my opponent’s helmet. I tried to walk it off, but the pain was overwhelming and the coaches had to take me out of the game. A few days after the game, the pain had still not gone away so my parents decided to get my leg checked out at the hospital. After a quick X-ray it was clear to the doctors that I had two small fractures in my leg, they went on to tell me that I could not play football for a couple of weeks, meaning I would not be able to play some of the last football games of my senior year. So under all this stress, pain and the amount of time football took out of my day, I was close to just giving up on my grades and to just start to feel sorry for myself, but I decided to keep on working and never giving up, because I always believed that “Success isn’t always about greatness, it’s about consistency…” -The Rock. These words have been a part of the few of which I follow with all my heart through this crazy game of

As far as topics that interest me are concerned, none are more relevant to me than the topic of failure. This past year was significant in that it has seen the failure of multiple intimate life goals of mine, some of which I've pursued for years, others, for months. However, the failure of these goals manifested all at once making me grasp for explanations. Initially, my perception of these failures was negative, similar to that of most people who fail to realize self-determined goals. However, as time went on and life unfolded, I've come to realize that my negative perception of these failures in particular, and failure in general, was skewed, flawed, and was a result of premature judgement of outcome. For one, my failure in fulfilling these…

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “To be yourself in a world that is trying to make you something else is a great accomplishment”. A question such as “who am I”? Really gives me the opportunity to differentiate and express who I really am and who I can be. I am not a complex person who thinks the world is against me, nor am I overly sophisticated “know-it-all” who doesn't take time to pay attention to my surroundings. I can't say that I am like every other person because there are certain things that make me a unique individual. What I can say is that I am progressing towards a brighter future.…

The advice that was given to me about writing my personal statement is that whatever I wrote, it must be a statement that came directly from the heart. I’ve found that in order to do this, I must actually write about my heart. When I was born, doctors discovered that I had a ventricular septal defect. The defect needed to be repaired, or I would have been wheelchair-bound and not lived past my fifth birthday. The experience of my heart surgery was not only life-altering for me, but for my parents as well. I was their first-born child, and they had just purchased their first home. It is hard enough to learn the ropes of becoming a parent - but to be the parents to a very ill child was something they had never prepared for. They always…

Growing up, I have had many experiences in my life that have shaped who I am. These influences have given me qualities that I consider both good and bad. My actions are always a direct showcase of my personal characteristics. A few that are particularly important are having patience, being non-judgmental, and thinking creatively. I learned a majority of my patience through my position as a research position. Research does not have immediate results; a good experiment takes time. My seemingly menial tasks, such as entering data, eventually contributed to the final product. I learned to be non-judgmental in my time shadowing an obstetrician, where I interacted with patients with so many stories. To judge them would cause a disservice, and potentially harm them. Finally, I learned to think creatively during my time at the Guild for Human Services. Each student was unique in his or her problems,…

Personal background starts off small, it changes and grows over time into something big, it grows into an identity. Walking down the hallway at school, seeing someone standing alone, my first instinct is to make conversation, compliment, or even just smile at him or her. This instinct came from someone once telling me an act so small could turn a person's entire life around. As a kid, reading encyclopedias about random topics, consumed my time. Many days were spent coming home to find an injured wild animal in my dad's arms waiting to be saved. My dad would sit outside and draw animals, trees, and anything else he saw. Nothing excited me more than trying to draw whatever my dad drew, and as good as he did. Any assignment that was handed to…

In sixth grade, I stood before a podium that stared back at my English class. This was not how I envisioned sharing my love for reading and writing; however, it was required. My palms felt sticky, and I just knew that the entire class could see my heart as it was about to hop from the walls that kept it safe. I prayed that I would not forget the lines as I recited The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. In sixth grade, reading, writing, and I started a relationship. Today, we have yet to break up.…

Most teenagers do not have a clue about what they want to be when they grow up. Most young adults also do not know where their path is in life. Even some full-blown adults are still trying to figure out their purpose. I was lucky. I knew exactly where I belonged from about the time I was seven up until now, at the decently young age of nineteen. I do not see my path changing anytime soon; in fact, I know it will never change. But, I did not just wake up one day as a child and know what my path was, while that would be impressive. Defining moments in one’s life defines who they are. There were lots of things I experienced in my life that made me realize my purpose, my absolute passion. I had four of these defining moments in my short span of…

I have to say that my greatest obstacle would have to be myself. My parents have instilled in me a sense of personal responsibility for my actions in life. When I mess up and it is my fault then I cannot blame anyone else for the repercussions. As a young black man in the world today I do not see my race as an inherent disadvantage . My thinking is if I work hard and stay out of trouble good things will come. Will I be mistreated at some point in my life? Yes, who hasn't. Human beings are, well, human. All of us have mistreated, judged, and discouraged someone. In some cases we do these things to our race, creed, or ethnicity. This brings me to the character of Jackie Robinson. He endured real obstacles that were set in place for people who…

Taka Narrative Essay If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my boring childhood was like, and how my parents were always treating my little brothers better, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth. I'm not going to tell you my whole goddam autobiography or anything like that, but I guess I'll just tell you about this madman stuff that happened to me around last week. First off, I had just finished my History class and was packing my goddam bags to get ready for lunch. I went down the stairs and waited in the lunch lines. There were at least five crazy bastards cutting in line, but I was too tired to give a damn. I trudged down to my usual sitting place and greeted Joe and Jhon. Joe was a psychotic Asian who thought he was a white kid, its…

Failure Failure is one word that no one wants to hear. It is something we all fear and hope to never experience, yet is a part of all our lives. We fail math tests, English essays, job interviews, progress reports; we all fail something. These are all easily measurable, tangible failures with calculable consequences. However, failure is defined as “a lack of success”. This “lack of success” extends much farther than just tangible actions. The biggest failure is when we fail ourselves.…
