Personal Narrative: My Oven
When I was about 10 years old I was making cupcakes by myself. I made all the batter by scratch. I had done this a couple times and I didn’t have anything go wrong. At the time we hadn’t redone our house so we had an older oven. The grate on the bottom of the oven didn’t come out with the door like my new one. I made all the batter and didn’t have any issues with the batter. I got them in the pan without making too much of a mess. I got all of the batter that I spilled on the pan cleaned off and I put them in the oven. I set the timer for my oven that was at 375° for 20 minutes. I went and looked at them at about ten minutes through the 20 minutes. They didn’t overflow at that point. My timer was going off so a ran to the oven.

My insider/outsider partner was Alicia Garcia. As you can tell by her last name she is Hispanic. I don’t have many Hispanic friends and I am not use to their culture. Starting on the project Alicia told me a little a bit about her heritage. One of the things I asked her was, “Do you celebrate the day of the dead?” I know that might seem like a crazy question to ask, but I the only thing that I truly knew about her culture is what I seen on TV. Alicia said that they do celebrate it to some extent. They don’t actually go to a grave site and light candles for their fallen relatives, but instead have a feast in honor of them. Alicia is the first generation American Hispanic.…

For starters, let me tell you the exact, hardcore, and intense procedure of how I was made. I started off as just some boring cookie dough inside a bowl. Then, I was put into an oven, and after about 20 minutes, I popped out as a nice, warm, round cookie! After that, a human spread some nice yellow frosting on the topside of my body. The human then proceeded to use some kind of utensil to draw slick, black sunglasses on me. And Sha-Pow, here I am!…

The first house my father built was constructed room by room and took more than 25 years to be built, a continuous work in progress. The original house was built in the standard square format without standard electricity and started with just four rooms: living room, dining room, kitchen and bedroom. The bathroom was located about 70 feet away in a little draw or valley from the house, which during the winter could be cold as the wind blew snow in during the most inopportune moments. New square rooms were attached to old square rooms as the house expanded outward to accommodate our growing family.…

Have you ever imagined of a room that sent such a good vibe that you thought it was too good to be true? Well, that is how this lunchroom was. When I walked in the first thing I say was the bright lit faces of the john Adams middle school students.Their faces were so astonishing that it but a big smile on my face. The poster filled walls were a bright baby blue with a hint of green. The tables were stunning. The colors were so remarkable that they were almost blinding. The pillars that stood high were covered with flyers of all colors. But the best thing of all was the smell coming from the cafeteria. It smelled like fresh pizza out of the oven. In fifth grade, once every week, I would be pulled out of my regular class to participate in a gifted math class. We would solve puzzles, solve problems, and play games that would get our minds to think. I do not remember much from this class, but I do remember the week we spent drafting our dream house on paper. We had specific guidelines to follow regarding the measurements, and what needed to be contained in the house. Simple things like a restroom, two bedrooms, a kitchen. Otherwise, we were set free to do as we pleased. I remember this because I became charmed by solving the problems that come with drafting a home. Making things make sense, and fit, was frustrating, but in a way that motivated me to keep going at full speed. That is why I seeked out an architect to shadow.…

How baking powder works: Baking powder is a double-acting agent which means it reacts to liquid and heat and happens in two stages (can also stand for a few minutes unlike single-acting agents). The first reaction takes place when you add baking powder to the batter and it is dampened with water or milk. One of the acid salts responds to the baking soda and forms carbon dioxide. The second and last reaction takes place when the mixture is placed in the oven. The gas cells expand causing the batter to enlarge. The two stages help by making the batter able to stand for about 15-20 minutes without its leavening power being lost.…
