Personal Narrative: My New York City Life
Growing up I spent a lot of time going to New York City, to spend time with my mom's side of the family. I enjoy the city, I've always called it my home away from home. I have always known since I was a little kid I wanted to live in the city. During the summer, I learned that New York City is the right place I want to fulfill my education and go to college as well as pursue my career in.

The summer of 2017 my cousin from Fargo, North Dakota visited for 2 weeks. She was 19 at the time and I was 17. Since then, we were finally of age, to explore the city alone, we spent hours going through 3 of the five boroughs. We went everywhere from Harlem to the Brooklyn Bridge, Coney Island, and the biggest tourist attraction, Time Square. During these excursions, we learned how to properly navigate throughout the Big Apple. We learned the Subway Station routes and how to follow maps. Showing how fast I can adapt to the city lifestyle increased my passion to be able to live there.

We would leave the apartment around 2 and stay out until 11. The feeling of having everything just a few feet away made life easier and more exciting. Coming from a small town like Wallkill, New York if you want to go somewhere and buy something you need to own a car. After a while, that begins to be a burden especially if you do not have your license or car. You begin to rely on someone to take you places so you aren't cooped up in the house all day with nothing to do. Many people recommend elder people to move to cities for the easy mobility purpose. Larger towns and cities are an also great place for people in general who can't drive and for people who can't afford car payments like insurance, gas, and loans. Aside from the easy mobility around the city education is a huge learning hub in the

There’s no other place in the world where I feel the most at home than being at Long Beach Island. There you can smell the fresh, salty air of the ocean as the warm breeze brushes across your face. It is a place where the sand, sometimes chilled by the water or boiling hot up in the sand dunes, fiddles its way through your toes one by one sending chills down your spine with every step. Off in the distance you can hear the chiming of bells as the ice cream men call children of all ages to cool themselves off with a frozen treat. This is the place that all summer long, I am lucky to call home.…

When I moved to New York to live with my dad, my life and ethics took a major turn. Many things changed, from school, to sports, to even the way I dressed. The people are different, the culture is different, and the way people talked was even different. The reason these changes had to be made was because of the black population in Virginia, they were all very gangster, and the New York population were mainly white, not that I have a problem with blacks, but they were very rude and inconsiderate. I am not racist at all, just people there are ignorant. In Virginia where I used to live, it was considered the ghetto part of my town, so I had to look, and act the part. But in New York where I live now, it’s the total opposite, a much more civil and calm town. I had to make so many changes to my life to adjust to the way people live In New York compared to Virginia. Not only the people and the culture, but my family in New York has a completely different way of living, by that I mean how they look at things, what’s right and what’s wrong in their eyes (I moved from Virginia to New York in 2007, when I was around 12 years old, in 7th grade). After the move life went forward, I got better grades…

I had only gotten six hours of sleep. I didn’t want to get up but today is the day that I get to explore Chicago with my friends! Even though I felt exhausted I pushed myself up and got ready. I didn’t know whether to expect it to be warm like the last few days have been or if it would be cold, so I dressed for both. I pulled my sneakers on and collected my little bag full of snacks and essentials for walking around all day. Getting to school I go sit with my friends outside the gym as we anxiously wait for the bell to ring. We came up with our plan of where we wanted to go as we munched on our little breakfast.…

In my experience, I don’t think I am reluctant to a specific identity. Houston is a very diverse city that people can find almost any type of music genre. In my community there are Hispanic and African American families. The music that is heard is of all kinds from “R&B, Pop music, Reggae, to Cumbia, Bachata and Regional Mexicano.” I have lived in the same community ever since I was born and in my opinion, I have grown up listening to the different types of music genres. This has shaped my identity to be open to different music genres and traditions.…

New York City VS Miami Although both cities are big, there's nothing else in the world that makes me feel more at home. New York City and Miami, FL have both been the only to cities that I have been back and forth with. Usually for the summer or whenever I have school I stay in Miami, but then when it comes to the fall or winter season, I take a nice trip to New York City. Picking between the two would only cause for me to lie about my answer because I love both places.…

I’m the kind of guy who doesn’t like to sit in traffic; I’m the kind of guy that could sit in the cockpit of a plane and go high speed where falling isn’t an option because once you fall you can’t get up. As I a child all of could think of was being successful because growing up living in east Harlem you saw the people that weren’t going anywhere in life and you see where that got them in life. Growing up I have saw people not finish school and people who were in school for a very long time to get one degree. Many people in my family have either not graduated or still in college my aunt for example took her about six years to finish a two year degree because she constantly messed up and stop going to school and when back and procrastinated…

When I was sixteen I moved to Orlando from New York. I had to rapidly adjust to the slow pace life of Floridians. The adjustment that was hardest for me was getting use to the transportation system, because my family didn’t have a car and we also didn’t know how to drive, like most New Yorkers. In New York everything is within a short distance of one another, so there is no need for cars when you can use public transportation. A reason people don’t drive in New York as much as a person living in Florida the gas price is $3.55 and in New York the gas price is $5.50. In Florida the easiest way to get around is to drive. In New York, you continuously run into traffic gridlocks during rush hour. That is when the public transportation will come in accessible. In Florida there rarely is traffic, if so it’s very light. In New York, everything is within walking difference. So if you don’t want to take public transportation, you can easily walk from point A to point…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

Walking down the familiar streets of New York City I was in my own world. It was like I couldn’t hear or see anything else. I was paying just enough attention to where I was going so that I didn’t walk into something or get hit by a car. Once I stepped out into the street and a car honked and the driver yelled, “Watch it kid!” I stepped back out of the street and he continued driving still waving his arms and glaring at me.…
