In South Central, Los Angeles, there is a food epidemic taking place among the population. For miles and miles, the only easily attainable food source is fast food; causing the overconsumption of un-nutritious, greasy, and fattening food. This is the problem brought to the public’s attention by speaker Ron Finley in his Ted Talks speech, “A Guerilla Gardener in South Central L.A.” Finley explains how everywhere he looks in his native South Central, all he sees are fast food chains and Dialysis clinics opened due to the lack of nutritious food. Finley views the lack of a healthy food source as a serious problem, and brings up his point; there are miles of vacant lots throughout Los Angeles, all of which could be used for the cultivation of healthy fruits and vegetables to better the urban community’s diet and health.…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

Being on National Honor Society and sports teams throughout high school, I had enjoyed participating in many volunteer experiences before coming to Drake. Every year our basketball team would collect food around our community to be donated to various food drives in nearby cities. With only general assumptions about food pantries, I always wondered how they worked. Now, after being able to volunteer at the IMPACT food pantry over the last few months, my original assumptions about food panties has transformed. The service-learning class I took this semester challenged many other perspectives in my life.…

Day to day, residents must leave their neighborhoods for basics such as raw meat and fresh vegetables. Edith Howard, whose daughter drives her to the store, is better off than many. An estimated 64,000 households in food deserts don’t have cars, so a weekly shopping trip can require taking public transportation for a long distance. According to Chicagomagazine.com, 109,000 food desert residents are single mothers. Because of this many simply are not able to make their purchases, turning to a fast-food outlet or a convenience store instead. In a convenience store, the inventory often consists of potato chips and liquor rather than broccoli and apples. If these items were to be available, they would cost almost three times as much as they would in a mainstream grocery store. (http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/July-2009/The-Food-Desert/)…

Do you ever wonder what those older, grumpy guys talk about when they are sitting together having coffee? You can tell they are mostly complaining. You hear the occasional swear word. You watch them shake their heads in disbelief at certain people and how they act. But, what do they talk about? Well, I decided to listen in. Unfortunately, after I started listening, they only talked for a short time more and then got up and left. Next time I will try to get quotes from a full conversation, but for today, here are two quotes from the last few things they talked about.…

This initiative was put in place in aid of raising awareness of obesity in young children and of the unhealthy foods that children are being fed in schools every day. The progress of this initiative have shown that there is a significant decrease in unhealthy snacks and lunches in schools throughout the U.S and “the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, has updated school meal nutrition standards for the first time in 15 years” ("Achievements | Let's Move!") This initiative came about because of the interest in the kitchen garden, which Mrs Obama planted in the gardens of the white house in 2009. ("Learn The Facts | Let's…
