Personal Narrative: My Mom's Surgery
“Watch out!” yelled Liz. Before I even had time to react, I fell to the ground and felt a sharp pain in my right forearm, along with a very distinct cracking sound. The smell of blood hit me like a truck. The excruciating amount of pain was intolerable, but I didn’t shed even a single tear. I slowly opened my eyes and realized Liz had run into me and fell on top of my arm. The basketball, which had caused her to run into me rolled slowly to the side as if it had nothing to do with my injury. The entire class started to circle around us slowly as if they were afraid they would wake us up. I elevated my head and saw a pool of blood underneath my right arm. Ms.Lang, who was my teacher, started to speak.
“Charles, go to the office and tell them to call an ambulance, quickly!” she attempted to say as calmly as possible. Charles, my best friend since

They carried me outside to where the ambulance was waiting. As they opened the back doors and placed me inside the ambulance, the harsh smell of chemicals and sanitizers hit me in the face like a brick. Once we were all in, we went to the hospital. By the time we arrived, my arm wasn’t as bloody anymore because they had cleaned, dressed and put a temporary sling around my arm in the ambulance. Mike asked me if my arm was giving me any discomfort but I told him I was alright. It was probably due to the pills one of the other men had given me while I was still in the ambulance. It was called anesthesia or something like that. Mike told us to follow him and we were lead into one of the hospital rooms. There was a sink, 2 chairs, a table, a television playing the news, a hospital bed and a ton of medical equipment I didn’t recognize, and just like the rest of the hospital it smelled like cleaner, chemicals and sanitizer. Mike told us the doctor would be coming shortly and with that he left. After what felt like an eternity, the doctor came in and checked my entire right arm up to my

The ER waiting room smelled stale. Sick babies and toddlers were crying, waiting to see a doctor. My brother was laying on the tan tiled hospital floor. He was shaking terribly as the antibiotics from the previous hospital wore off and the infection set in more. Both of his hands were red and swollen. His right hand, had a black mark from where the IV initially infected. His left hand was swollen to the size of a small balloon, kind of like a blown up rubber glove I used to get from the doctor when I was younger. My mom took her jacket off to cover him. His skin was hot to the touch but he was still freezing. His fever was 101.2 but there were no open rooms in the ER at our second attempt at a hospital. We had to get him antibiotics…

I stroll back up to the clubhouse. When I am next to the kiddie pool, I hear “ouch” followed by tears. I whip around and a toddler is on the pool deck with a bloody toe. When his mother comes to console him, I escort the sobbing toddler and his mother to the clubhouse. I grab the first aid kit and latex gloves. I first put on Neosporin, which makes the child cry a little more. He starts to calm down after I place a band-aid on him. His mother thanks me for my help.…

Obviously no one knows what happened but the doctors told my mother I had “forgotten to wake up” was the line the doctor gave my parents. They said blood had fallen on my vocal cords causing muscle spasms in my throat, making it impossible to breathe virtually closing my throat. After the follow up surgery the doctors brought me to the recovery room and came out to inform my anxious mother and father they could see me now the follow up was a success. My mother heard my shrieks from the end of the hall since the anesthesia had worn off, she now smelled blood and vomit all over me. I knew I was just happy to see the face of my mother not all those doctors I didn’t recognize. The doctors said I didn’t vomit but later contradicted themselves claiming I…

I looked around and I wasn’t in my room anymore, I was in the hospital during my grandpa’s surgery. The waiting room was cold and sterile and the smell of antiseptic was so strong I could taste it. Waves of uneasiness washed over me as if they were trying to drown me. My grandma and my mother were sitting in the room with me and they looked just as scared. I remembered how long my grandpa was in surgery to get his windpipe removed, how I had thought that I wouldn’t make it through the hours he was and that if he didn’t then I wouldn’t make it for much longer afterward.…

I feel like I’m in an episode of ER or Grey's Anatomy without the pretty people. There were rows and rows of people on gurneys in the hallways. Waiting for a room? Is Michelle going to be one of them? Then there were cops everywhere and they were taking reports and I looked in one room and a woman’s face was completely bloody. And then I heard the word attacked and realized this must be the norm here. Well I guess Michelle was lucky because we got right in a room. So now Michelle is still really, really out of it and they hook her up to oxygen and try to get her hydrated. In the course of being there we saw about six different nurses and two different doctors. She had a chest x-ray, EKG and blood work done and little by little her blood pressure started coming back to normal. All I wanted was to take her home. I hated to leave the room to find a bathroom because I was afraid of what I was going to see out there. You see I can't watch TV medical shows because I faint at the sight of blood. I kept my head down and found a bathroom without getting lost. Finally 14 hours later at 10:30 p.m. we got to go…

When I first got there the put me in a room and introduced me to the anesthesiologist and the reconstructive surgeon. The surgeon told me that his plan is to remove the dead tissue from my burns and then they’ll do skin grafts to help my third and fourth degree burns. After I was done speaking with the surgeon the anesthesiologist started to tell me what he was going to do. He said that he’ll be putting a local anesthetic that will put me to sleep. While the surgery is going he’ll be monitoring me and my blood pressure, heart rhythm, temperature, level of consciousness, and amount of oxygen in my blood. It was time to go back I was told the surgery would take about 5 to 7 hours and that after I wake up I’ll be taken back to my room.…

A cold sweat began to bead at the base of my neck as I urged the muscles in my knee to work their way through the set of squats my physical therapist had asked me to perform. My appointment was scheduled at seven in the morning, but already I could feel the adrenaline rushing up and down my spine as I watched the sun rise over the waking city through the large paneled windows of the gym. Sharp pain shot up the inside of my right knee as I slowly lowered myself, making it difficult to continue the squats. As I pushed the muscles in my knee to lower myself further, I gazed intently at the wall in front of me for inspiration. A quote I had learned to cherish over time as my personal mantra adorned the wall, reading, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." With these powerful words lodged into the back of my mind, I dropped my body into an even lower squat and continued to complete the set with strong determination to get back to soccer, the sport…

While medical care was available growing up, there were financial or situational periods where it was not necessarily accessible. I am from a single parent family. My mother moved in with my grandparents after her divorce and works two full time jobs to help provide for my brother, grandparents, and I. Since my father went to jail and my grandfather passed, we have had to make many adjustments financially. This was the case due to my father not providing payments for child support for the time he was incarcerated nor occasional months prior. There has also been a complication with my mother and I having our identity stolen, which has created additional problems when applying for governmental aid throughout my undergraduate years. I worked…
