Personal Narrative: My Mission Trip To Haiti
This summer, I was blessed with an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to travel to Haiti on a mission trip. Of course, I was slightly nervous about traveling to a third world country, where I did not know the language, and the only people I would know would be the people from the church that I was traveling with. However, I knew this would be a life changing experience, so I took the leap! I am so grateful I did because every second was worth it! Our mission was to work with orphans, help homeschool English speaking children, and meet with the women’s group of Grand Savann Christian Church. My group and I traveled to a community called Grand Savann. While there, we stayed with an American couple in their home. For four days, we had the same routine. In the morning, we went to a place that is both an orphanage and a homeschool. Our group would take turns assisting with schooling and …show more content…
Hearing the women's stories was eye opening. A terrible earthquake basically destroyed their town a few years ago. Haiti was in a rough situation before the earthquake, yet things got even worse afterwards. Even with their dire situation, they were still happy with what they had. It makes me realize how little we appreciate things in America. After we met with the women, we held a party at the church for all the children of Grand Savann. The party was wonderful and the children all seemed to have had a great time! They were thrilled with the toys we brought for them and loved our attention. Overall, my experience in Haiti is something I will treasure forever. It made me realize just how blessed I am and that material items are completely unnecessary for a happy life. I can not wait until I get another experience to help others. This trip has inspired me to do more. I would like to go on many more mission trips. I think I would love to work at a medical clinic in a similar

This mission trip was impactful spiritually and mentally by changing my viewpoint of inner city missions. We served in tangible ways, providing people with their basic needs. Sometimes it is more effective to come out of your wheelhouse to experience or gain new perspectives. This is exactly what happened to me. I was pushed out of my comfort zone and have been grateful for it ever since. Leaving an impactful impression on me spiritually and mentally, this mission trip has been one of the most beneficial trips I have…

Since a young age, I have been exposed to the beliefs of trying to make a difference in the world through my mother's teachings. In 1989, my mother came from the Fiji Islands to America, seeking more opportunities. She took on low paying jobs to make ends meet, never giving up on her dreams of living in America. Since my childhood, she has always taught me the importance of being kind, generous, and playing an active role in the community. And after visiting my family in Fiji, I saw first hand what it meant to have those qualities—the kindness, generosity, and outgoing nature of the village. They also showed what it meant to be a part of a community by working together, farming the land, and cutting sugar cane to earn a living. Through my…

Every year, for the past five years, my church youth group has gone on a mission trip to St. Louis. This mission trip was called The St. Louis Project, sponsored by Global Encounter. The St. Louis Project was a week long trip, during which you would go and have a kids camp at either a church, mobile homes, or a park to teach children about God, then come back to the “home” church, where we slept, to have worship services. The first year we went was my seventh grade year, there was a small group that year, only consisting of about 13 maybe 14 people. That year, Global Encounter had told us of an international trip to El Salvador they were planning 4 years from then. My whole youth group was very excited and couldn’t wait to go.…

Haiti very obviously needs help right now. The storm had devastated the country, leaving entire parts of it destroyed. Hurricane Matthew only added to the pain and loss the country was already recovering from due to the previous earthquake in 2010, and the country needs help now more than ever.…

After a long, strenuous day of classes, studying and work there’s nothing I long for more than the feel of lukewarm water being drizzled (yes, literally drizzled) down my back as I stand in a luxurious two feet by two feet box of a shower. Don’t even get me started about the gorgeous “Carolina housing” shower curtain that covers almost three-fourths of the shower.…

Tin shacks, worn shoes, and working in fields is the normality for a majority of Guatemalans. An estimated 75% of the country of Guatemala lives below the poverty line and upon first glance, one will not question this high statistic. In 2013 I traveled to Guatemala on a mission trip and have been back every summer since. Before my first trip I had been told that there was extreme poverty but my version of poverty at the time was a small house, beat up car, and maybe not showering every day. Little did I know that my version of poverty would sound like a luxury to most people I would come in contact with. Many days we spent our time in the villages. We built houses and stoves, played with the school kids, and more than anything we got a whole…

A dozen squealing, laughing little girls tugged my arms, legs and hands. They were so excited to show me their bedroom. Meeting all the orphans at the Colima, Mexico orphanage was very overwhelming and very emotional. At first, I felt very out of place, like seeing grass during a Michigan winter. All these kids surrounding me right now have no families and have nobody to love them. These kids were all beautiful in their own way and really knew how to make you smile without even trying. They were like flowers in a rundown parking lot. Beautiful but with a dark, sad background. Everytime they looked at you, you could see the excitement in their eyes.…

As my community service, I helped out at a facility called Feed My Starving Children. While there, you make food for starving children throughout the world. This was a very eye opening experience to me and it made me realize how fortunate I am to have a home, food and other things that some children/families don’t…

During the year of 2010, the summer before eighth grade year. I got the chance to participate in a five day youth mission trip in Galveston Texas with my church that went by the name of Oakwood Baptist Church. During the mission trip there would be many different activities that our church group would get to be a part of, such as an outdoor dodge ball tournament, indoor carnivals, and our very own Vacation Bible School. I was able to take part in this amazing adventure, and I couldn’t wait for it to begin.…

On Tuesday, March fifteenth I attended the Women's Refugee Experience. There we heard from the women refugees living in southwest Ohio. The women refugees at the event were from Bhutan, Burundi, Iraq and Syria. I enjoyed hearing about the experiences of the woman’s travels and their stories actually made me rather emotional. Although learning about their experiences there was one major conflict at the event which was the language barrier.…

We took our Toyota Hilux and invited my uncle to go and visit them with us. As we were making our way through Santa Ana, the city where we live, I saw a family of 5 members digging through trash looking for food to eat. This really impacted me in a way that can’t be explained, and the image will always go with me throughout my whole life. I imagined us having a good time in our beach house, and our private housing, then I imagined them fighting for their lives each day. In El Salvador most people don’t have the opportunity to go to school, and once you reach a certain age you can work, your little butt goes to work for your family. I’m lucky enough that we have businesses over there, and live a pretty good life, but those people, THAT family, don’t have anything. Everyday is a fight against the violence and the poverty they face. This really opened my eyes how the real world is. The real world isn’t just going to school, using computers, checking your phone. NO! There are people out there with children digging through trash looking for food to eat. I really hope people open their eyes, and see the reality, and help them. As we were pulling into our grandparents house I saw their house, their maids, and their cars. There are two sides to this world, if you are not rich then you are poor compared to the big CEO’s out there. Please open your…

We were leaving after eating dinner with the young Honduran girls, when they came running over to give each of us a hug and say goodbye. I barely knew these kids, but it meant the world to them that we wanted to share a meal together. It was humbling to see that the breaking of bread and sharing of stories, something I took for granted my entire life, could mean so much to these soon to be amigos.…

Although they had nothing they were still happy people and when we would give them an item such as clothes, toys, or even just basic medicine, they looked so happy because items like clothes, toys, and basic medicine change their life and the Dominican people were very grateful for them. During this trip I realized that in life I take many things for granted and that some of the items I feel are just a part of everyday life and are nothing special are something that can change someone's life. Community service makes me a better person because I recognize the luxuries in life that I am given compared to other people. Serving the least favored open up my eyes to the world round me and shows me what the world is really like outside of my bubble. When I participate community service I become aware that in order to have a happy life you do not need to have the most expensive items all you need are people around you who love and support you. Another realization when performing community service is that you register that helping other people is a very important action to take in order to help the people's lives get better so they can have more opportunities in the world because most of…
