Personal Narrative: My Mission Trip To Haiti
Entering into the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere opened my eyes to see things in a plethora of ways and has changed my attitude on life. I learned a lot about myself, God, and others as a result from this missions trip and I saw myself grow in many different aspects too. I came to realize in Haiti, how important it is to work well with others, and that I am able to convey this action smoothly. Working with others is such an important skill to have as working with people is a proficiency we will need for the rest of our lives no matter the profession one takes on. Unfortunately, I was also enlightened that being put in an uncomfortable situation, like traveling to a foreign country, can be mentally and physically tough and that I am not one to take charge during those vexatious times. But it was time for me to grow in that area of vulnerability by and stepping out of my comfort zone and therefore …show more content…
For example, when kids would cry or want attention, they seemed to come to me for comfort. I was dedicated to learning about them and creating an amiable relationship with them throughout that one brief week in Haiti. Seeing how those kids appreciated how devoted I was to them caused me to think of the dedication I display to my family, friends, school, and sports. I noticed that in whatever I do, I always try to give it my all and stay committed to that person or situation. During volleyball season at my high school, I do my best to be faithful to my team and the game and this mindset has resulted in me winning our school's total release award two years in a row. No matter what, in any position I am in, I work my hardest and show true dedication to all my relationships with friends and family as well as with my school work and church responsibilities. In the future, I plan to excel in my daily life and professional situations by staying loyal and working my hardest in

In my freshman year, I went to Ohio Mission Trip, which was led by Mrs. Lundquist. While I had an amazing life experience through volunteering, I was able to become closer to my friends and upper classmen. Darby and Sydney Lundquist also joined the trip, and they shortly introduced me about Washington and Lee University. I assumed the college should be very advanced since they were well-known for their excellence in intelligence and sports. This year I attended a college meeting with Mr. Webster to get to know more about the college. It was a great opportunity for me to grasp a big picture of the school as well as more specific details of admissions. I immediately fell in love with the school as Mr. Webster explained about the school in detail.…

I am currently a senior Political Science major, History minor, with a concentration in International Relations. I am also the chairman of the Howard University NAACP Political Action Committee. I am an academic, I am a student leader, but more importantly, I am a servant. It is my firm belief that the reason I was blessed to be given the opportunity to get a college education is so that I can use this privilege and knowledge to help others. Just recently in December I was fortunate enough to go on a service trip to South Africa with the YAALI program. There we did community service and connected with our brothers and sisters on the continent. This was a very impressionable experience for me, especially because it was my first time leaving…

The line sounded rehearsed, as if he had spoken these words multiple times a day for many years. His glossy brown eyes penetrated my startled blue ones for as long as I let them until I turned away. His dirtied innocent face was one that came straight out of a UNICEF commercial, the sort that caught you off guard during a commercial break of your favorite TV show. Wistful faces of impoverished children flick before your eyes as a concerned voice insists that if you donate your unused pocket change every month, you could support the life of this poor boy.…

I came to the United States from Colombia when I was just 3 years old. I was brought into the country of bright opportunities because like every other parent, my mother and father wanted what was best for me. My mother had to give up her dream job in Colombia, which was being an accountant for an essentially important company, in order to facilitate my well-being and open up the doors for my future. As the years progressed, I began to acquire both languages, English and Spanish, but there was a point where I became tongue tied and had to assist in speech therapy. My parents would talk to me in Spanish at home but in school all I would hear was English, my mind was extremely confused to the point that I made my own language by using both tongues in one sentence.…

Haiti has the highest percentage of orphans out of any country in the western hemisphere. The country is full of starving men and women who live lives that are unimaginable to many Americans. However, if you were to look deeply into the lives of some of the Haitian people, you would find joy. A joy that comes from God alone. Christianity has been spreading like wild fire through Haiti and replacing the common practice of voodoo since…

Imagine starting a race twenty minutes after the other participant, this gives them a head start hence lowering your chances to vanquish your opponents in the race. This example applies to real-life issues like the people born in high and stable economic situations. Their probability to succeed in life is higher than those indigenous from third-world countries. Panama faces this problem and I have no doubt a change can be achieved and I can be the one who does it because everyone deserves the chance to succeed if they try hard. During last year, I had the chance to be elected as coach and teach a group of teenage boys, the fundamentals of soccer; what I did not realize was that this experience was going to change me completely.…

I would like to say I know Spanish, after four years of studying in high school and multiple trips to South and Central America, yet it seems every time I leave the States, I find myself in a frantic struggle to process the words I know and figure out the meanings of the ones I do not. Sometimes this simply means missing out on a few insignificant details, other times it can seriously complicate life.…

The Dominican Republic, known for its beautiful beaches and balmy weather, was the last place I ever imagined I would find myself in this past summer vacation. On this week long trip, it wasn't for the warm ocean waves or the traditional Dominican cuisine I was called to, I was called to serve the beautiful Dominican people. On the third day of the trip, instead of heading out to the worksite where we had been pouring the concrete footers of a plastics and water filter factory, I opted to travel with a group to the childrens' cancer ward in Santiago and visit the patients. We started out our visit by performing a few dances we had taught our vacation bible school and handing out fun little gift we had brought with us. We played ball with some…

After a long, strenuous day of classes, studying and work there’s nothing I long for more than the feel of lukewarm water being drizzled (yes, literally drizzled) down my back as I stand in a luxurious two feet by two feet box of a shower. Don’t even get me started about the gorgeous “Carolina housing” shower curtain that covers almost three-fourths of the shower.…

This past summer I had the incredible opportunity to go on a mission trip in Ecuador where I worked in an orphanage partaking in labor work, as well as, traveled out into the cities bordering Quito to organize VBSs (vacation bible schools)in startup churches . In beginning of the trip I expected the work I would participate in would be life changing to those in its wake. My expectations were highly set and the outcome did not match up; in fact, the outcome was quite the opposite. In the short week I spent in Ecuador, I realized almost immediately that the problems that needed to be mended were much larger than a group of fifty people could overcome in one week. There was so much need, and an insufficient amount of resources to provide for it. Nevertheless, I was…

All this came about because of a few passionate people who were willing to follow God’s call and make a difference. This is something that has caused me to reflect upon my own life and my passions. I have always had a passion for working with kids, which is why I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember, but after my trip to Haiti, I realized God had touched my heart for missions as well. Even though everything about Haiti was out of my comfort zone, it felt so right at the same time, and I was gripped with a connection to the people of Haiti that made it difficult to…

Overwhelmed. The only word I can think of when the flight attendant calmly says, “Welcome to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, you may now unfastened your seatbelts.” Tears fell from my eyes and all the emotions that I was feeling for the last 4 hours suddenly began pouring out. I had never been to Haiti and the only mindset of it I had was that there was killing and kidnapping. I was extremely anxious because of that. “NO!, YES!, NO!, YES!, NO!!”, my conflicted mind begins to yell. I couldn't believe that I was actually there. Holding up the line, I got off the plane as slowly as possible. Ironically, being up in the air was much more relieving than being on the grounds IN HAITI !. “Daph, you’ll be alright,” my mom says. “Hopefully,” I mumbled. I thought to myself that maybe just maybe I will actually enjoy it.You will never actually understand the importance of bigger things without appreciating the little things…

As a consequence of living in a homogeneous area for my entire life, I crave change. My intrigue for the city of New Orleans began with The Princess and the Frog, the Disney movie from which the previous lyrics originate from. My nine year old self was drawn in by the representation of African Americans in mainstream media, however I left with the awareness of a vastly different culture. The diverse people, unique food, extravagant festivals, and rambunctious rhythms transformed my outlook on societal divisions. The intermingling of cultures was a foreign concept to me, I was surprised to find a community unionizing solely for the purpose of supporting a city. However, from that moment I desired a change in atmosphere, one that possessed these newfound qualities. This was then compounded with learning about the birth of jazz in my 8th grade music class. Reminiscing on the lesson, I remember jazz staples such as Buddy Bolden, Louis Armstrong, and King…
