Personal Narrative: My Latino Community
Growing up, I lived in a predominantly Latino community. I was always around people who shared my same culture, beliefs, and background. Rarely did I ever experience challenges against my culture and beliefs. As I grew older, and attained more experiences, I became aware of the problems in my community, and in the world. Just recently, I learned how imperative it is for me to embrace my culture and to help my community. For this reason, I was inspired to help make a difference. Over the past few years, I have committed myself to various community service organizations; and have become more active within my Latino community. My biggest community service commitments so far have been with the Toby Keith Foundation Teen Board and the Junior Rotarian …show more content…
Apart from the Toby Keith Foundation Teen Board and the Junior Rotarian Club, I have volunteered with various other organizations such as the Red Cross, Moore Food and Resource Center and the OCARTA Wellness Hub. I have chosen to dedicate my time to these community service activities because I know that a small effort can go a big way in changing other's lives. Along with community service activities, I have also dedicated my time within my Latino community. I have attended numerous leadership conferences aimed at Hispanic students, including the Hispanic Youth Leadership Conference at the Oklahoma City University and the TREE Conference at the University of Oklahoma. I was also selected to attend the Latinos Without Borders Fall Camp at the University of Oklahoma. Attending all of these events have changed my life, because I have learned how to fight the barriers that plague my community and culture. It is important to me to be involved within my cultural community because I believe in order for a community to prosper, its members have to become aware of the problems within their community and work to better

Growing up I excelled in every educational aspect of school. However the stereotype for someone of my skin color did not allow for me to be both Mexican and smart. My Hispanic peers began to exclude me; the most common way they did that was by taking away my identity as a Mexican. I heard “Diego you white” an uncountable number of times throughout my schooling. I noticed that my grades and vocabulary would trigger that comment so I began to change the way I acted in order to fit in. It was not until recently that I realized the fault in changing and found a peaceful merge between the two speech communities.…

One organization that I’m involved at Goucher College is the Futuro Latino Learning center (FLLC). This program provides opportunities specifically to the Latino community of Baltimore County. The students of Goucher College teach classes and there is ESL and basic computer training. Students are not only helping the Latino community but they get the opportunity to speak Spanish and improve their language skills. In my first year of college I helped with teaching a class; I was the assistant tutor. Now this year I am helping out with the children program playtime and cultural program. While the adults are taking their classes they drop off their children. This program provides a safe space and for children to learn about their culture and speak…

A particular activity that stood out to me the most was the burrito project. Living pretty close to downtown LA I frequent visits there. I’ve witnessed homeless people asking for help and it hurt knowing that I could not do anything to help at the time. Until one day I came across the Burrito Project. I brought upon an idea to the club that we should help out the homeless. During the wintertime we all met at a church in Pasadena to prep the materials. At the church we make the burritos, it was considered the main meal for them. After making the burritos…

Since I was a kid I’ve noticed my home town of Pomona, CA had areas that were roughed up. Whenever I passed through main streets like Holt Avenue I could see sidewalks filled with homeless people & damaged property. Seeing my city in bad shape sparked something in me & I knew I wanted help better the city & give back to it but wasn’t really sure how to contribute up until high school. Sophomore year in high school I joined Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán, MEChA, I was introduced into this club by a friend that was actively involved in it. MEChA’s main focus in the community was to help the Spanish speaking people within the community that were in need of help in school. Another club that I joined that year was Key Club International.…

Being part of an institution such as Latino Scholars of Promise has instilled many values in me. The Latino Scholars of Promise is a program that is dedicated to preparing soon to be college students for the future by developing leadership and preparing them for the real world. It has affected me as an individual and has affected other aspects of my life. Being part of a program like this one has helped me view my surroundings in a different way. I am able to see things differently and act in a way in which those beliefs could be used. Without the help of this program I would not be able to learn and put into practice the four values I hold dear today: perseverance, valor and leadership. There are so many instances in which I am driven and determined to use them such as my education, helping others succeed, and most importantly inspiring my…

My close-knit community, the Ismaili Muslim community, has always been there for me since birth. Since birth, my community has taught on how to become a respectful, caring, compassionate, sincere, and an empathetic person. The most influential of these characteristics that have been instilled in me is the ethic of compassion and sharing. This ethic has shaped me into a person who gives back to both my local and global community in ways of volunteering to aid the less fortunate who live in poverty near me or across the seas, or to assist in creating…

After building a house for a disadvantaged family in Juarez and working in the encompassing heat of the Mexican sun, I was exhausted. Relief came when I walked into a cool house with the rest of my youth group, about to enjoy an authentic Mexican meal with the family who would move into the new home. However, that relief was quickly offset by the uneasiness of entering the home of total strangers. Not only were we strangers, but we came from different cultures and spoke different languages. My stomach insisted that this would be an awkward experience, but my gut claimed otherwise. Beneath my apprehension and the gurgling of my empty stomach, I knew that I could learn something from this meal; I could learn to understand their culture and their personality through universal communication.…

I’ve decided to run for the LIA leadership team because I have seen the impact that the leaders this year left behind and I aspire to do the same. Latinos in Action has taught me many things including on how to work well with others and that there isn’t a dead end for undocumented students, like myself, after high school. Every time I step in the Lia classroom I feel like I’m part of the community and that I belong. As a member of LIA I hope that I can get the chance to become a leader. A leader should possess initiative, honesty, commitment, and many other attributes. I have initiative because during Junior high I was not encouraged by my family or others to join groups but seeing the impact that LIA has, I decided that I wanted to make a…

I am a victim of the educational disproportionality in the public school system. I didn’t see the extent of the damage that had been done to me until I came to college and noticed how other students were unscathed by the inequities in the public education system. However, it was only because I was used to being in the same ineffective system surrounded by the same students who also didn’t know the experience of getting a higher quality education, but not anymore. Education is a powerful thing, and once you educate someone, you open a wide range of new opportunities for success. Minorities—Latinos in particular—are disproportionally affected by the lack of a great public education. I needed to find likeminded people who wanted to bring about change to benefit the Latino community. Being a leader meant I needed to take action.…

It’s always on the back of my mind, and resurfaces to my thoughts when I’m in any social setting regarding Spanish—my second language. I am 3/4 Puerto Rican and 1/4 European, though my pigment carried from the European side, as I have the typical blonde hair and blue eyes. My father was born in Puerto Rico and my mother, although being born here, her mother was Czechoslovakian and Polish, my mother’s father was born in Puerto Rico much like my own father. It always boggles me why I don’t look more Spanish due to the more Spanish heritage I contain. When people see me, they only see my pigment—white. They don’t see the Spanish part, supposedly, until I tell them; then they give me a “Right” or “I see it now” as if they’ve known all along.…

It wasn’t until my mother moved me to a school in Manhattan for my last two years of elementary school that I really embraced my Hispanic culture. In this school, there was a diverse population where everyone was encouraged to accept their differences. There were a lot of other mixed children as well. There were events and concerts that celebrate important historical figures of our cultures and days devoted to learning about the history of different cultures. For example, there were family nights, events where you would bring in your family and interact with the different people around you to really get to know your peers and the backgrounds that they come from. This was very important to me because it opened me up and exposed me to the diversity in the world. This foundation allowed me to express the different aspects of my culture; it doesn’t matter who is around me, but who I am on the…

I'm wouldn't call myself diverse. I've led a so-called "normal" life, living in the same town, same house since the day I was born. In fact, I've never even left the country. Before the summer of 2016, I had never ventured beyond secluded vacation spots of the east coast. However, as I journeyed out west that summer, stopping at 10 national parks, I came to know and appreciate a world beyond the one I knew.…

Life as a minority isn’t easy because at the start I am already one step behind. Growing up my family didn’t have a lot of money. My parents decided that they wanted to give me the best education possible to them so they put me in a private school the majority of my life. During this time I learned to appreciate my education and to work as hard as I can. I often have many questions on my mind and I always want to find the answer. I am a great thinker because when problems arrive, I always think of ways to solve them. Although, many have a part to do with who I am, my experiences are the main parts that made me. When under pressure, I do not crack I am persistent and determined to achieve the maximum. I am a relaxed and funny person…

I became a member of the Parent Teachers Students Association (PTSA) in my freshman year of high school. The PTSA is a volunteer association where parents, educators, and students collaborate to support the needs of their schools and community. My mom has been a member of the PTSA for as long as I can remember, and I knew they were so instrumental in creating so many special moments for the communities they served. We find our days saturated with commitments, however it is so crucial to devote time to giving back. The action of volunteering is a key catalyst for fostering cultural balance in our communities. Each year the PTSA would sponsor “Sunday’s with Santa”. It was a venue for deprived children to come together in a unified setting hosted…

A major part of my life has been centered around my family. The many holiday get-togethers and birthday parties with homemade ice cream and chocolate cake bring back some of my earliest memories. The older I become, the more I realize I would like to share the feeling of community I felt when I was with family to the other people in my life. One way I was able to do this was through volunteering.…
