Personal Narrative: My Involvement On The First Robotics Team
Over the course of my High School career, I was a member of the FIRST Robotics team. My involvement on the FIRST Robotics team has personally given me experience in many values of a liberal education. My experience has allowed me to communicate with all my teammates, connect with others, appreciate the design process, and solve problems together. On the Robotics team we had many subgroups named “corps”, there was fabrication, design, media, software, and hardware. Although there were these five corps, we had to communicate together to build one robot. In order to execute this we had to communicate exceptionally well between each group and listen and hear what each group had to say. For example, if design was trying to place a motor on the robot, but the wiring would not allow for it, hardware would have to explain to design why it would not work, and attempt to come up with a compromise or a new idea that would succeed. Moreover, we had to communicate with everyone on the team, there was a wide range of experience on the team, ranging from people with no experience coming into their first year of robotics to mentors with their bachelor's degree in engineering and work experience. We had to be able to communicate with everyone so that they would be able to …show more content…
Working as a team enabled me to understand different viewpoints, and work together to come up with the best solution. Working as a team also increased my knowledge and understanding and I became a more enlightened person from this. In order to create the best robot for competitions our team had to practice self-criticism. We could not be stubborn with our own ideas and solutions, rather we had to understand the pros and cons of everything and work for a solution from that. Working as a team, we had to understand everyone’s strengths and weaknesses, and assign them tasks based on their strong

Teamwork was a part of my undergraduate degree. A specific example of a teamwork challenge that I faced was the annual robotic competition. The team was polarized on the subject of the mechanism design. Given time and resource constraints it would not have been possible to allow sub groups to pursue individual projects. The problem was eventually resolved by adopting a design in line with the project objects and which was realizable within the limited time period with budget. As a team leader I filled in the role of a facilitator and kept the team on track in meeting the deliverables. I also ensured that each member got a fair share of participation and could contribute equally since the project was crucial for every engineering student and each of us was there to learn. The effort was successful as the team emerged the 5th best team amongst 50 other participating teams.…

When it comes to teamwork, most people will consider teamwork in terms of being part of a baseball, basketball, or football team. In contrast, a team is “really just a group of people who use their skills, experience, and knowledge to work toward a common goal” (Beverly K. Bachel, 2007). Teams working together in the workplace are extremely productive and profitable. Teams working together increase problem-solving skills and innovation, quality, and decrease turnover and absenteeism. (Scarnati, J 2006) Teams have an overall high success rate when well structured and the communication between the team members stays open throughout the project. A team is a collection of individuals who have gathered to achieve the same…

My most significant experience in working as a part of team occurred when I was apart of the softball team. Without my teammates I wouldn’t have learned all that I know now about softball today. I was familiar with the softball players. We helped each other improve, whether it was with running, practicing drills, catching, or throwing. We never left a teammate behind. During practices we all ran as a team. During games we also chanted when the batter hit the ball. With out my team I wouldn’t have been as good as a softball player. So to me with teamwork come new friends and wonderful coaches.…

However, our robotics team wishes to be well rounded, so we do more than just build robots; therefore, we also commit ourselves to service for our community locally and abroad. Although being a leader can sometimes be difficult, I find great pleasure in being one because it is challenging, it is useful, and it is influential.…

In my opinion, the most important factor that aids a team to work effectively is to have an established goal that each member works toward. When each individual is aware of the direction of team, they can consistently contribute their ideas and insights to achieve that goal. Therefore, my primary objective in this course is to actively seek the best ways to achieve the goal at hand. Once a certain goal has been established, I need to remind myself and my team members of that same goal in an on-going basis; so that the team won’t diverge from the direction it must be headed. By continually mentioning the goal that was agreed-upon, it keeps the team moving together which is vital to success. Each member must know how far the team has developed their steps to achieving the goal; therefore it would be a real disadvantage when one member is behind. Also, the most fundamental attribute that must go with teamwork collaboration is team cohesiveness and a high level of commitment. Without working together and committing to one another, a team will most likely fail. Each member must trust one another and agree that each individual will give them the same level of dedication as one another. My goal is to give my team members all that I can offer and hopefully, learn as much as I can from them to enhance the results. In order to reach this goal, I have to actively listen to my team members and see what they have to offer. Teamwork is about giving what you have and learning what you…
