At first, I thought all that mattered was the clothes you wore, what makeup you had on, and who you were friends with. There is more to life than all that. I love helping others and my induction into the National Honor Society allowed me to do just that, especially in my four service projects I had the opportunity to lead and be a part of. I try to please people and make sure they are always happy and I now know it is most important to give back to the community who gave me so much.
For instance, in March 2016 I visited the middle school to talk to fellow seventh graders about bullying. I was a leader

One might wonder what a fifteen-year-old was doing standing atop a thirty-yard dumpster, chainsaw in hand, and yelling, "Give me more! It can hold more!" During my ninth grade year I saw an opportunity to complete my Eagle Scout project, helping the Lenape Valley Church remove massive piles of downed pine branches fallen during an early March ice storm, creating an eyesore and complaints from the local community. The project I was tackling was Herculean, and I, compared to now, very inexperienced at leading people. But it is Boy Scout’s duty to give back to his community and I had promised that the enormous piles of branches and snow would be gone before Easter.…

Being that there was not much to do in such a small farm town, I started to join clubs in middle school in order to occupy my time. Through these clubs I completely changed. I transformed into a person who is a leader and is confident in their own abilities.…

There are three essential areas that help to define humanity. These are the quality of one's character, one's service and leadership, all which help to shape the future. I try my best each day to fulfill the requirements of character through service and leadership. Character allows people to know each other, as it is the definition of the roles that humans play in the life cycle. Loyalty, determination, optimism, and honesty are very important traits that create one's character. I learned this at my family kitchen table , where conversation and wisdom are dished out with our meal. These are the virtues that allow me to fulfill my life journey.…

Joining the Honors college did not cross my mind for a long time in my research of Appalachian. I did not see myself capable of thriving within a possibly contentious community of highly intelligent people. However, as the deadlines began to tick down and the pressures of school were put on blast, I began to realize that the honors college was my strongest option. Since I was very little, competition and a healthy amount of academic pressure have brought out the best in me. Rather than wilting under the intensity, I rise up ready to face the challenges thrown my way. The honors college will stimulate my growth towards intellectual, personal, and professional achievement utilizing both friendly competition and social proliferation.…

I graduated the university in Korea eighteen years ago and worked in a company for seven years. However, while I lived just as a wife and a mom, I lost my confidence to achieve something and forgot dreams that I want to come true in my own life. Therefore, I was afraid of going back to a college and studying in English after deciding to be an occupational therapist. I remember the first day in Cypress College last year. The first class that I took was a math class. Since I had graduated the high school twenty years ago, I forgot many formulas and solving methods in math, so I suffered from a lack of confidence after enrolling the class. I was shaking with fear that the professor might ask me a question. However, I tried to believe and encourage…

The proudest moment in my high school career is when I signed myself to take my first AP class. I was really nervous about going to the meeting to sign myself up to get the summer assignment because I felt that I was not ready for the work load, and I would not be able to pass the class. My excuse for not going to the meeting was that I was helping in the cafeteria and I was going to be really late, but when I told my two best friends Jenny and Virginia that I wasn't going to take it anymore. They got so frustrated and annoyed with me because they said I was stupid if I didn’t take AP calculus because that was my favorite subject and I needed a challenge in that class. They also made me remember when I would tell them that Math Analysis was…

An event I've experienced that was life changing was when I obtained the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America. It was an affirmation of years of disciplined work and study to have such a prestigious honor bestowed upon me. In scouting, I developed various moral and ethical tenants that have shaped my foundation in life. Tenants like integrity, honor, reverence, faith in God, a man's role and his responsibility to his family, and a nearly innumerable quantity of experiences growing under the leadership of the Boy Scouts of America have molded me into who I am today in my very core of being. The realization of my dream to become an Eagle Scout took 11 years to obtain, so I'm no stranger to adversity or perseverance. To my memory,…
