Personal Narrative: My Horse
I had never ridden a horse before. Trotting away in the middle of a Costa Rican plain, I could feel my bare ankles stinging from the stirrup rubbing against them. We had been riding for a solid three hours in the unbearable heat.
Suddenly I felt my body falling backwards, my horse was running. I grasped onto the horn for dear life. Thinking back, they did not teach me much about how to ride a horse before I jumped on, so I had absolutely no idea what to do. “Should I jump off?” It seemed like a valid option because my horse was heading right towards my mom’s. I was then in survival mode. I grabbed the reins and pulled as hard as I could. I had no idea what this was going to accomplish, but my horse flew backwards onto two legs like you would

When the bread was done, I cut thin slices of the cheese which I then layered on both pieces of bread. I patiently waited as the cheese melted before my eyes and then combined the two halves. I pressed the sandwich even more until the cheese oozed out. I would not describe myself as a patient person, but I waited patiently until I was positive that it was perfect.
It was the best thing that I had ever eaten in my life. I was not sure if it was just because I was so hungry that it tasted so good, but I knew at that moment, I had created something note worthy.
It had then became an obsession. Everyday when I got home from school or sports, I would make a grilled cheese. I began to experiment with things that I could put inside of it to make it more flavorful. Sauteed onions, roasted eggplant, arugula, pesto, everything tasted like it belonged.
Unpredictable situations in my life have only made me improve due to my ability to make the most out of them. Positivity is what fuels me, and I believe that I will be unstoppable at whatever I decide to put my mind to by having an open mind, and exceeding expectations. Sometimes you have to be able to take risks, and pull the reins towards the brighter

It was my favorite thing to eat right before going to bed. Not the bedtime snack a nutritionist would recommend, but it gave me the pleasure I needed for something sweet after dinner. When I was 4 years old, I remember sitting in my living room while my mother taught me how to count and write both in English and in Spanish. She would use ingredients to describe the amount and help me count. When it came down to learning how to write the number eight, it became all down hill from there. My mother placed a freshly made figure eight buñuelos in front of me and said, “This is 8”. I never went on to learn how to write 9 and 10 that year because of how much I was…

The dining area of Rocking Horse Ranch was always hot and crowded during meal times, where the tired, overworked servers would bustle around attempting to provide excellent customer service for each and every inane request from the guests. I’ve heard that loud, hectic, quick-paced atmospheres filled with pretentious parents and scrambling children are almost calming sometimes. This atmosphere never brought me serenity; it gave me anxiety and stressed me out. Just the thought of sweeping melted ice cream cones off of the stained carpet and dry mopping the tiles floors gives me nightmares.…

I grew up riding at my parents’ horse barn in Bozeman, Montana. I started riding when I was three and continued until I was jumping cross country jumps by age eleven. When I was old enough I started to learn how to jump and once I got the hang of it I was in love. Bigger, higher, faster, whatever I could jump I would. In September of 6th grade, my first year in middle school, I competed in my first big Three Day Event horse show in Missoula, Montana. My horse Sunny and I had a great performance, nailing all our jumps. My family owned Sunny for a little…

Horse showing is not an easy task. It is hours upon hours of going in circles and patterns around the arena. You have to know all the right patters and ques as well as having everything spot on and perfect. It is perfect chaos. I smiled to myself at how perfect this show was going. I’ve only been showing for 2 years and so far I’ve gotten $10, 1 ribbon, and a good job from my trainer. If you were me, you would understand how exciting it was. My trainer, Dominique, is also the real owner of my horse and my same age best friend. I had never won anything at a horse show before. More than anything I got mad because I could never get Drifter to listen or did something wrong. So, yeah, It was a pretty special night. However, sitting here…

Close your eyes, and remember a time when you were happy doing something even though you knew it was dangerous. This is what I feel like when I ride a horse. Horses are unpredictable my coach says “the only horse that can’t hurt you is a dead horse” which is completely true. When you ride a horse there's always a chance you will get hurt, but people who love horses take the risk. The few who take eh risk have few options for the style they want to ride. When I was in 5th grade, I was helping my 4H group with our International night table when I decided to play my luck at the raffle table. I put all my money into one basket and actually won the raffle basket. It was a basket for horse lovers and included horse grooming products and books about horses. I never rode a horse before because I was born with multiple disabilities including a tethered spinal cord and life threatening latex allergy. My biggest challenge in life has been living on the autistic spectrum. I could not be around crowds, loud noises and I avoided being part of groups and activities. I did not have self-confidence or a passion and my autism affected my ability to socialize. My mother saw how excited I was about winning and she took me to the horse farm for a riding lesson. I soon found a passion. It was at this time, that the spina bifida was diagnosed. I had major surgery to repair the defect. After my surgery, I had to face the challenge of living with a partially paralyzed bowel and bladder and had to learn how to use my legs again. At first I would walk alongside the horses, and then I began riding horses again. The horse I was riding and walking with name was Pippin. He never gave up on me no matter how weak I was. Pippin was my best friend and was always there for me when I needed someone to talk to. A year after my surgery Pippin and I were getting ready for my horse show. I ended falling off because I was still weak. When I fell Pippin did not run away like must horses. He stayed right by my side till I got up. The next week I won my first horse competition and fell in love with the sport. Pippin soon became part of the Masterton Family for all the work he did with me, and for his reward he now spends his days retired in a great big barn with a nice field.…

I still remember the day I got bucked off like it happened near moments ago. I had been around horses and owned them since before I could walk and always had the biggest passion for them. Whenever someone would talk about them, a burning desire would light up inside of me and I could go on for hours just talking about them. I had rode horses just about every day, and even though I cared deeply about all of them, this one horse that I seen at the auction that I went to with my step dad caught my eye. We went to horse auctions on the third Saturday of each month, even though we never bought one, we enjoyed just going and admiring all the different breeds that were there. But one day I seen one that I just couldn’t let leave the auction with anyone else but me! His name was Duke and he was the most magnificent animal I had ever seen with his brilliant white body, long flowing mane, and huge, long, powerful legs. When the auctioneer was giving details about him, he clearly stated that he was only green broke (meaning that he had little training and needed an experienced rider) but of course none of that…

I tried to appreciate the fact that we have food, but sometimes I lose the battle to convince myself that everything taste good. But what could I do? I was hungry and all the packaged food from Hong Kong was given to the kids when I was trying to be a friendly teacher. After swallowing all the food, I squatted down next to the bottle filled with water taken from the river, took the blue piece of soap and a torn little piece of cloth to remove all the dirt from the dish as I marvel at how incredible my hands are to be able to move in this weather without electricity and…

Ever get so hungry that you just want something quick and easy to eat? I know I do. One of my favorite things to get when I am feeling like I’m starving and can’t wait any longer to eat is a sandwich. But I don’t always choose the same kind of sandwich. Sometimes I may feel like eating a bologna sandwich, and other times I may decide to make a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. When I am not in the mood for one of those sandwiches, I may choose to make a sandwich that I like to call a grilled “triple cheese” sandwich; my own twist on the classic grilled cheese.…
