Personal Narrative: My Home Communication
Even though my father’s communication isn’t the best I feel my self-esteem is solid. Instead of focusing on the negative parts of my home communication i pay the most attention to the positive to build myself up. Using what O’Hair et al. spoke about in Chapter 2. Basically my interpretation of what was stated is that we can for cognition by using our knowledge about ourselves, how we feel about ourselves, and how we think we will fair in the future. (45) So by this logic I feel that making sure what I think about myself is positive and reigns supreme over anything else I might here that could be discouraging.

The way that one regards themself, a relatively stable set of perceptions about one’s self, is referred to as self-concept (Adler, Proctor, Rosenfeld 56). Self-concept is a reflection not only of the physical attributes but also the emotional, moral, value, and preference characteristics of personality. The way that someone feels about those qualities will determine their self-esteem, part of the self-concept that determines self-worth. Typically it is thought that a high self-esteem is preferable over a low self-esteem, and while that is largely true, a high self-esteem doesn’t necessarily mean that person will enjoy interpersonal success. A high self-esteem may lead people to think they are more successful than the rest of the world sees them.…

The first house my father built was constructed room by room and took more than 25 years to be built, a continuous work in progress. The original house was built in the standard square format without standard electricity and started with just four rooms: living room, dining room, kitchen and bedroom. The bathroom was located about 70 feet away in a little draw or valley from the house, which during the winter could be cold as the wind blew snow in during the most inopportune moments. New square rooms were attached to old square rooms as the house expanded outward to accommodate our growing family.…

Shouts and laughter echo throughout the kitchen as my grandparents recount stories of growing up in Mexico as young adults. Everyone’s eyes light up with animation as family members contribute to the conversation while eating homemade tamales and menudo. I remember when they kicked us out. It was only a couple of weeks ago. We Indians were minding our own business when the troops first came. They dragged us out of our tents and sent us walking with only the clothes on our back. My family decided to go to the Oklahoma region along with our tribe. And so here we are, walking through forests, woods, and plains on The Trail of Tears, looking for our destination. We have been walking since, and our clothing can do nothing against the harsh rain, snow, and coldness.…

Today, I worked in the garden and mended and sewed clothes. Because we’re in the midst of the Great Depression, I have to work during the days instead of going to school. I’m luckier than most, though. We don’t have much money, but we have plenty of food. We grow our own food and buy meat from people who raise pork for pigs. Items like sugar and coffee are rationed, and stamps are distributed to control the amount given to each family depending on the amount of people in the household. We also have a vegetable garden we use to supply food, and we can extras for the winter. My dad is a Methodist minister and my mom is a schoolteacher, so we’ve recovered pretty quickly.…
