Personal Narrative: My Hair And Stereotypes
When I first recognized beauty standards: There’s this one picture of my sister and I from a

photoshoot we did a long, long time ago that we always put up on display because my mother

loves it. In the picture, I have a small amount of makeup on and my hair is silky straight unlike it’s

usual, natural state which is bouncy and somewhat frizzy spirals that I had inherited from my

mother and grandmother and now love and take pride in. I was around eight years old and I

remember little flashes of the pre-photoshoot hair and makeup. I remember the beautician, Crystal

asking me whether I wanted pink or golden, and then picking Golden. At one point while Crystal

was detangling my tangled, curly hair, I distinctly remember her saying

It was grand Final day at the Wimborne sports ground my stomach was churning inside of me. I Stumbled to my hands and began to throw up in one of the shrubs in the car park. I was interrupted by dads laughing “You sissy stop begin a girl and get with your team we’ve got a grand final to win!” I replied back “Well actually dad if you remember, the only reason our team made it to the grand final was because of me” my dad just laughed and said “Sure, sure whatever you believe Aden”. The only reason dad named me Aden was because my dad believed that one day I would hopefully grow up as some tough rugby league super star like Greg Inglis or Sam Thaiday. But no I am nothing more than a sticker figure, with shorter hair and gleaming blue eyes. Every…

My hair is force to be reckoned with. Its cascading fury flurries around everything, my shoulders, my back, the chair that catches it in its unwavering maw. It’s strong, it lasts through any torture I force upon it. It falls out in clumps and chunks when I tug and pull too much, but mom says that’s normal because my hair is so thick. I have the fullest head of hair in the family, she likes to tease. She’ll affectionately twirl it between her fingers and create little ringlets that fall down and tickle my chin because I didn’t pull it up into a messy ponytail.…

I agree with you Jessica on having unrealistic images of yourself and the difference between looking a certain way and feeling a certain way. Cultural identity is a big deal to teenage girls because it projects her identity based on a certain groups that she associates with (Matlin, 2012, p. 124). In high school I was in the group of misfits, that happen to be mainly boys, and we had friends in other groups but we did not fit in anywhere else. Even though I projected an image of not caring about what others thought of me, I still felt I was fat and when I looked in the mirror, I saw myself as fat. I look back now and I was at an ideal weight then but currently I still think and feel I am obese. I am reminded by the doctor during every checkup…

I look exactly like my older sister Michelle. You’d sometimes think we were twins if not for the seven year gap and the one inch height difference. What that seven year separation doesn’t show in our faces, it makes up for in our experiences. The situation worked in my favor; Michelle went through various life stages years ahead of me, allowing her to share her “Now that I look back on it” wisdom with me. Because of this, my sister took it upon herself to guide me through adolescence. I am eternally grateful to have had her to support and care through our tumultuous childhood.…

Ever since I can remember, I have always loved doing hair and makeup. When I was a little girl, I always got into trouble because I would sneak into my mothers or old sister’s makeup and play around in it. Whenever I got into my preteen years, I began to start watching beauty gurus on Youtube. Any chance I got I would watch tons of videos on hair and makeup tutorials and practice it for myself. These beauty gurus that I watched over the years inspired me to go into the cosmetology field.…

My mother "started young", as some would say. Becoming pregnant at seventeen, a mother by eighteen, and losing her father all at the same time, she was faced with reality at a very young age. Taking on the responsibility of motherhood when you yourself are still only a child takes such courage, devotion, and hard work and for that I look up to my mother. She sacrificed her teenage years in an effort to make my childhood everything hers was not.…
