Personal Narrative: My Grandfather's Loss
Two years ago, my grandfather was in the hospital. Not enough blood pumping to his heart, and with the circulation in his leg getting increasingly worse, the doctor told us the one thing me and my mother would never want to hear.

I looked around and I wasn’t in my room anymore, I was in the hospital during my grandpa’s surgery. The waiting room was cold and sterile and the smell of antiseptic was so strong I could taste it. Waves of uneasiness washed over me as if they were trying to drown me. My grandma and my mother were sitting in the room with me and they looked just as scared. I remembered how long my grandpa was in surgery to get his windpipe removed, how I had thought that I wouldn’t make it through the hours he was and that if he didn’t then I wouldn’t make it for much longer afterward.…

I’ve been told the impact of a parent’s passing can carry on for years or forever. I was my mother’s primary care giver for two years. In her last four months, along with hospice, I took care of her full time along with maintaining my full time job. She passed in her home surrounded by me and my other two siblings in January. Just three months later my dad, who was not married to my mom, died unexpectedly in his sleep. I am still in the tender times of grief from my mother’s and father’s deaths. Who would think I could fathom writing about such a sorrowful time in addition to writing about the lessons I learned from my mother’s last months and the graceful way she left this earth. I relive this not only because it is kind of…

When I was little I never really understood why my dad was always in the hospital for surgery, or why he gave himself a shot every day. All I knew was that I wanted him to feel better. As I got older I understood that those surgeries were reconstructive surgeries on his face. At around sixteen, my dad found out that he had a rare tumor on the left side of his upper cheekbone. The tumor has since been removed, but he still goes through reconstructive surgeries. Along with his tumor, my dad has sarcoidosis in his lungs and is a type two diabetic. When my step father committed suicide, it was the most shocking yet influential experience of my life. Immediately I knew something was wrong, even if their expressions and body language were not obvious enough. After sitting in the living room for what seemed like an eternity, I went into the next room where I found my mother who was crying, and when I asked what was wrong…

It was one of those lean years of our lives. Our rice field was destroyed by locusts that came from the neighboring towns. When the locusts were gone, we planted string beans but a fire burned the whole plantation. My brothers went away because they got tired working for nothing. Mother and my sisters went from house to house, asking for something to do, but every family was plagued with some kind of disaster. The children walked in the streets looking for the fruit that fell to the ground from the acacia tree. The men hung on the fence around the market and watched the meat dealers hungrily. We were all suffering from lack of proper food.…
