Personal Narrative: My First Track
Two years ago, on a cold Saturday morning, I prepared for my first ever track tryout. I took a shower, put on my clothes, and got into the car. On my way to practice, I felt strong physically, but I also had an undefined, jittery feeling about how the day was going to go. At 7:25am, I arrived at practice and was quickly spotted by the coach. He called me over and said, "You're a big, fast guy, and I want you to be a sprinter." I knew I was fast, but I thought that being 6'1 and 225 pounds, I would be considered overweight to be a sprinter. As the week went on, I qualified for the 200 meters in the Sophomore Invitational, which I ended up placing third in. After finishing the race, I felt energized, and my coach recognized my potential to be a 400 meter runner. The week after the invitational, we hosted our first tri-meet, and the coach signed me up for the 400 meters. After I patiently waited for an hour, the announcer called for the 400 meters runners to check-in. Walking down the bleachers, negative thoughts started to run through my mind. What happens if I fall, come in last place, or even get disqualified? I checked in; after waiting …show more content…
Weighing 225 pounds, I recognized that I needed to lose weight. Losing weight wasn't that much of a challenge because I went to practice and walked five miles home. Now I weigh 170 pounds. In my first 400 meters race, I ran in 56.4 seconds, and I recently ran the same race in only 51 seconds. I went to both championships last year before I failed to qualify for the next round. However, going from nowhere to possibly breaking the school record this year has motivated me to do greater things in life. Even though track wasn't a life-changing experience, the small things I got out of it were important. For example, I lost weight and gained dedication, medals, and friends. I also learned that if I make the effort, tremendous things are

Usually, our track workouts are pretty easy. Some 8x1 (eight 100 meter sprints), 6x150 (six 150 meter build up), even the occasional 8x200. On some dreadful day in March, after the last bell had ended, I met up with my friends and changed in the empty restrooms. While walking down to the cafeteria benches where track kids usually wait until the 3:30 mark, I overheard the captains and the varsity kids talking about a hard workout. When 3:25 rolled around, I headed up the hill to the track with two of my friends, Anthony Arcomona and Ethan Walls, where we proceeded to run the half mile warmup (not Anthony, he slacks off and usually never does 2 laps). After stretching and all the drills, Coach Decker announced that we would be doing Indian Runs.…

In 2008, I was a eight year old and, regrettably, a member of the Saint Joseph Cross Country team. I consistently finished in the last five runners, and despised every moment that I spent training for the race season. Even though I began running cross country in elementary school, I was never a natural. After years, I was allowed to quit. By the time I was a freshman in high school, I had forgotten my hatred of running. After much enticement from my mother - a runner herself - I joined Bowling Green High School’s Cross Country team. Halfway through the first practice, I remembered every reason why I had quit the sport years earlier. Regardless of how much I begged my mom, she insisted that I finish the season. I was stuck with two choices:…

As a freshman and sophomore, I was a part of the track and field team at my school, Emerald High. I competed in many events, ranging from the 100m dash to the 4x800m relay. I have had many great achievements, like making it to the State Qualifier as a freshman, and competing at the South Carolina state championships in the 4x800m, placing fifth, as only a sophomore. However, along with the wins came great losses. A prominent part of my losses was a sprinter from my neighboring town’s track team. She was an amazing sprinter who was one of the best female runners on her team. We competed in similar events, two of those being the 200m and 400m. Anytime I ran the two events when we competed against her team she was always in my heat, usually in one of the lanes on either side of me.…

My last event was the 200 meter dash and as I got set in my blocks my heart pounded. I was beyond nervous but I knew I had a point to prove. The race started and as I was running the only thing on my mind was crossing the finish line with a new and improved personal record. As I finished, I was out of breath and everything seemed blurry but all I could hear was my coach screaming in excitement. I heard him yell at the top of his lungs, “PR, You did it! I knew you could do it!” The entire night I thought back on my past and could not believe I had just ran the best time I ever had in four…

I frantically went down to lane 4 for my 400 IM relay. I had a lot of pressure on me because I am the last person swimming. Pressure to score points for my team weighed heavy on my mind. Little butterflies in my stomach tried to tell me that I was afraid. Stepping onto the block, I anxiously waited for my teammate to touch the wall.…

Later that night my mother told me that even if you don't succeed at first just give it time and practice and eventually you will thrive. The following year I went out for the team again and practiced each day, giving it my all remembering how to control my breathing and when to push through the pain. As the cross country season went on and improved my time, and running form, determined to succeed in the future. I have always been a believer in hard work, and I find the harder I work, the more determined I'm to succeed. My last three years of running I made the district team and became a medalist of central Massachusetts as well as a divisional medalist. Views on practice may differ but it does not make you better, it's the attitude and mentality you put into your practice that truly makes a runner flourish. In brief life throws all sorts of challenges in your way not just in sports but in everyday activities. However success is not final it's a water station to refuel your mind and continue on life's journey, failure is not the end, it's just a horrible race, but the will to practice on after an awful race is what…

I was relieved, the only problem I had of not being in shape could be easily solved by running in the morning before school. The only thing I needed was my parent’s permission. And since I really had my mind on making and joining the track team this year, I really needed this “OK” from my parents to put my plan in effect. After dinner, each of my family members went up to their own individual room to finish their work for the whether it be homework or simply chores. As soon as the schoolwork on my desk was…

Watson came up to me and said, “Lemos, you want to be a sprinter?”, and I replied, “of course”. Coach Watson, believed in my talent for running. With all of his guidance and my hard work, I accomplished my goal of qualifying for State Track. On a cold, Friday evening in March, I was warming up before a track meet began. I was going to be running the 100-meter dash- it was the first race of the meet. The stadium was piling up with people’s families, friends, and relatives. My own family was in the crowd, and I was so excited to show them all the hard work I had put in. “100-meter girls!” I heard the announcer say, and I knew it was my turn to go and run. While waiting in line, I started to get nervous like I do before every run- I get jumpy and my hands start to sweat. Finally, it was time for my heat to begin the race. I waited impatiently for the gun to go off, signaling the start of the race. The gun went off with a huge bang! It caused me to jump a little, but then I was off…

Have you ever felt like your heart would beat out of your chest? That's how I feel every time I'm on the line before a race. I love to run, but it comes with an extra side on nerves. As much as these nerves try to get to me, a little dose of nerves helped at the line for the first time. And as I may recall, it was the official start of my track career.…

Our fourth leg runner crossed the finish line with a record setting 9:47.9 and Lampeter-Strasburg’s twelve year old 4x800m record was shattered. My teammates and I were on cloud nine. I could not believe that we had done it, even though the countless hours we had put in on the track said otherwise. Through thick and thin, wins and losses, we were always after the same dream. My worn spikes had accumulated so many miles during the season that I had lost track, but it was all worth it when we received a baton engraved with our names and record time at the track banquet. That day, it seemed as though nothing could ever stop me.…
