Hi let me introduce myself. Myles, Myles Brogdon. I’m about tell you story that I still regret till this day. It had to do with my college future. “ I called you down here for a reason’’ he said. ‘’ And that reason is you're the first person in Inglewood High School history to

The reason my academics aren’t going well as you or I would like is because of the several family issues I’ve had to face during my high school career. It began my Sophomore year, I found out my mom needed surgery in her arm so the chances of her cancer spreading would be reduced. I was under a great deal of stress worrying about my mother, taking care of my four siblings making sure they knew everything was going to be okay, even though I wasn’t sure myself. It was all up to me; while my other brother worked to help with bills, my mom being in the hospital, and my dad working. Taking care of my siblings consisted of cooking, homework, cleaning, nightly routine, and putting them to bed. When the work was done it would be around 10 o'clock. It was already tough to buckle down and focus on homework without all the stress. With all this my first semester grade was less than great.…

I went to St. Michael School from Kindergarten through Eighth grade, so when it came time to leave for high school, I was not excited for the change. St. Michael was especially small in regards to student population. We had just under three hundred students split between all nine grades. That left roughly twenty to thirty kids per class. I was extremely used too this small environment and not exactly looking forward to the terrors of high school towering over me nor the thought of being lost in the sea of students. Over the years I was extremely imbedded in my academics. I had straight A’s for my entire time at St. Michael. I received the academic achievement award at Eighth grade promotion for having the highest GPA in my class. Despite this, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to live up…

Throughout my years of high school I have always strived for the best grades that I could attain, and they didn’t come easy. There were plenty of distractions that had driven me off course. Whether it was long hours at practice, volunteering for my community, or having a part-time job, I couldn’t let these activities hinder my grades. This purpose had sprung in me, to not only strive in my extracurricular activities, but also my schoolwork. Balancing both school and additional activities wasn’t a simple task. This led me to many sleepless nights, in which I had to tutor myself on certain topics I was struggling on. This ranged from my hardest subject, to studying extra hours on my hardest class, and even simple topics that I needed extra work…

Kristina Navarro’s journal article, “An Examination of the Alignment of Student-Athlete’s Undergraduate Major Choices & Career Field Aspirations in Life After Sports” examines the unique situations collegiate student-athletes(SA) navigate while working toward a degree and planning for their future. Driven by the individuality emphasis of Mark Savickas’ career construction theory, a qualitative approach was employed to capture each SA participants’ stories and tales. Few research studies exist that focuses solely on the SA population and Navarro’s research was aimed at understanding the impact of life experiences on choosing a major and how the chosen major lines up with their career aspirations (Navarro, 2015). The 29 voluntary participants…

I’m starving and I didn’t eat anything all day.” So we passed up Billy boys and stopped in there to grab some burgers and fries. Moe didn’t have any cash on him but he had a Tilted Kilt gift. He scurried across the street to grab a meal and we told him to call us when his order is ready so we can head out. As Hussein, Ibby, and I waited for Moe to call us, we demolished our sandwiches. A juicy cheeseburger stacked with lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup, and onions. The burger was heaven in my mouth. Hussein was in a joking mood and he really likes playing jokes on people. He tells me “Yo call Eric and tell him we got jumped.” I told him “No man, that’s not funny. What if it really happens?” Hussein says “Dude you overthink think everything. Just have some fun and do it.” So being the idiot I am, I did it. A decision I know I will regret for a long time. Waiting for a reply from Eric, Moe calls and tells us to come by Tilted Kilt so we can head home. We leave Billy Boys and cross the street by 95th and Ridgeland. Next to Tilted Kilt is a bus stop and on that bus stop is a group of twenty to twenty five people waiting. Teenagers just a little bit older than us, they looked like they were up to no good. I had a strange feeling about them so I demanded “Guys lets walk down Ridgeland instead of walking down 95th. One day Hussein’s tough act was going to get us in trouble and today was the day. “No man stop being scared, they’re not going to do…

Becoming an athlete, let alone a college athlete, is not a path paved in gold. There are times you will be doubted, challenged, and cast aside. There will be mornings you are awake before the sun rises. There will be nights you cry yourself to sleep. You will push your body to points where it will fail. In fact, you might be blindsided by an injury that ends it all. There will be coaches that will give you a false sense of security or flat out lie to you, and there will be coaches that change your life. Your teammates might be your newest family, or they might be your worst enemy. This path is not for the fate of heart and there are no promises. But at the end of the day, if given the choice to do it all over again, any athlete will agree…

It was a cool spring day in 2008 and 4th grade had been going swell. I’d been sitting in class for last couple hours worrying about my vocab quiz, which always seemed to elude me. All the kids around me had giant smiles on their faces life was good for us. Today’s lunch was pizza and maybe a salad. After sitting at our desks we headed down stairs to eat at lunch and enjoy ourselves. The teachers around us seemed exacerbated, tired a partial look of sadness every once and a while, these emotions broke on their faces depending on the day, but this must have been because they didn’t like the pizza. Ms. Hammer asked us “ Could you please all get in line and if you talk timeouts will be given out” As we head down stairs John and Richey continued…

My heart beating so fast, I’m scared it may jump right out of my chest, I look up and face the entrance to the worst place to be, the Principal’s office. Terrified, I follow behind Mrs. Taylor through the doorway. The first person I see is my best friend sitting at the round table with all of her things out of both her backpack and purse spread out, everywhere. For some odd reason, my friend and I are both being searched. “What is going on? I most definitely have nothing to be afraid of, there is nothing in my bags,” I think to myself. Out of curiosity, I ask Coach A as well as the two police officers in the room, “May I ask why we are being searched?” The school officer, officer Crance replies, “You have obviously have told the right people that you have been selling drugs on campus.” “Excuse me?” I immediately bark back at him, “I think you have the wrong set of girls.” “We’ll see about that, bags on the table.”…

“AAAAAHHHHH, where is the train!” I yelled. “Ko-Ko, will you calm down, it’ll be here in a minute.” Jaylyn said. The train always took forever and a day to come, it really did. That didn’t stop me from complaining every time though. People who complain over every little thing got on my last right nerve, it really did. But I was one of em’ and I wouldn’t change for nobody. Anyways we were on our way to the beach; see it was my birthday and we were having a “girl’s day out”. I started to play a joke on Chante but I didn’t really feel like it. I have to be in the mood to do stuff like that. Finally the train came and we got on. It was a nice one too, you know, the ones with the digital sign that says every stop; not like the raggedy ones that always reek of urine. Then, this guy got on with an old, worn out phone. I hate to people with bogus phones. I could dislike someone just by the type of phone they had. I know that sounds mean but seeing someone with a bumy phone always got to me. “Excuse me sir.” I said “yes?” was his reply “Why is yo phone so crummy?” I said very curiously. “Ko-Ko!” Jaylyn and Chante yelled in unison. “WHAT?! Yall know I don’t bite my tongue for nobody; I want to know why he has on 150 dollar pair of Jordan sneakers and a crummy phone. It just doesn’t make sense! Jaylyn and Chante shook their head while the man got up and moved to the next cart, even though there was a sign that said do not move from cart to cart unless there is an emergency. I pulled out my cell phone and started to text a few people to make sure they were still coming to the beach. I hate for people to say that they…
