Personal Narrative: My First Migraine
After my first migraine attack, I kept getting them every day. As they kept happening, new symptoms would arise. Anything from slurred speech, dizziness, and vomiting to blurred vision, numbness in the face, and feeling tender all over my body. The list goes on but these were my most common symptoms. I was afraid to do anything because everything seemed to trigger a migraine. Even kneeling down to pick something up or smelling perfume would be an instant trigger for me. My life got to the point where I wasn’t able to enjoy watching television. I had to adjust the brightness so low that I couldn’t see what was happening. My social life declined tremendously. Spending time with my friends and family wasn’t an option for me anymore since I woke

Some people think that the butterfly stroke looks like an easy swimming stroke with both arms coming out of the water at the same while gliding their body over the water, but they are wrong. It's actually one of the most difficult strokes. When my heat of swimmers was called for the event of the 50 yard butterfly, I stood behind the start block getting ready to swim butterfly and to do my best. The announcer then gave us the signal to get up on the starting block. Once everyone was on the block they said, “Take your mark”. As I got ready to get into the start position. I relaxed and slowly gripped the bottom of the block tightly, then positioned my foot one over the edge and the other behind. Then as I got ready to jump off I lunged forward…

This surgery lasted about a half an hour, but it felt like forever. While he was in surgery my heart was racing, my head was pounding, and my palms were sticky and sweaty. There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

Have you ever felt as though the whole world was spinning out of control and that you might go flying if you tried to stand, or have you ever felt the feeling of your brain rattling against your skull as a headache pounded its way into your forehead. That is the feeling of a concussion, and if lucky you are enough to have never experienced one just think of a jackhammer against cement. It is a constantly pounding, pulsating, and pulverizing sensation that demands all of your attention. Concussions are selfish. They do not care about the project you have to finish or the phone call you have to make to your grandma because they dictate all of your actions, they have complete control of you regardless of what you have planned.…

As I begin to write I can feel it coming on, my veins pulsating inside my head, my eyes starting to display a reddish hue, the back of my head ringing with pain. I can sense exhaustion creeping up, similar to a storm rolling in from the horizon; nevertheless, with much to accomplish, I persevere. It is the beginning of the nightmare I dread every single minute of my life; the start of a migraine.…

Your body is an amazing machine. In fact, even the word ‘marvelous’ is not enough to describe just how amazing our bodies are. You see, your body is a product of a hundred-thousand-year evolution process. It has the power to heal itself and has the power to regenerate cells that the body thinks are necessary for you to be healthy and survive. However, as humans began to understand more fields in chemistry, biology, and technology, our bodies also become more exposed to toxins brought about by chemicals in the food we eat, radiation from the things we use, and pollutions in the air we breathe. Our bodies become so overwhelmed by the sudden increase in the toxins that surround our environment that it impairs our ability to quickly adapt to what we are experiencing. As a result, we become a little less healthy by day.…

When I was four years old I started having severe migraines when I had not done anything to trigger it. I would not be stressed, I ate all the time, and I slept a lot more than I do now. My parents and I kept wondering why my head would always be hurting, so when I was six and in first grade I went to see my first neurologist about it. They said it was just certain foods that made me sick so I started watching what I ate and what caused headaches so I could stay away from them. As the years went by more and more foods made me sick and eventually I had to go to the doctor again about it. The doctor I went to originally had retired so we started searching for a new one to help me. No one would take me because I was under 18 and they were not…

I have had plenty of adversity in my life, but I never knew it. I only realized this aspect of my life when a family member said it. Epilepsy is something that my family and I have dealt with for about twelve years; since I was about six years old. We never gave up on pushing seizures out of the picture. We have driven three hours to Cincinnati, Ohio for the years in which I have known about epilepsy. I have taken countless types of medicines for the issue, and recently got the VNS implant.…

It was a perfectly normal Saturday night, until I sat on the couch. I expected to enjoy a funny movie with my dad, but instead I got a trip to the hospital. I sat on the couch, and then I felt a sting in my elbow. At first, it felt like I got a shot at the doctor, but it slowly got worse, and felt more like a knife slicing into my elbow. I winced and sprung up from the couch. I squinted and my eyes scanned the spot where I just sat down. Aha, I thought. There was a small piece of plastic, and it looked like it broke off from a container.…

Another thing stressed in the article is to make sure to take vitamins such as magnesium. While have a deficiency is becoming more and more common, such deficiency could be potentially disastrous to a person who suffers from migraines. One last thing stressed in this article was to go get your chemical balance checked. This is an important step especially for women. Bodies can be so complex that you can’t just assume things. Even if you don’t believe your not balanced it doesn’t hurt to go get your chemical balance checked if nothing else is seeming to stop your migraines. This article relates to my practice as a nursing assistant for many reasons. Migraines are very common and some of the patients/residents/clients that I will be working with could potentially be a person who has frequent migraines. As a nursing assistant I would be the first one to witness these reoccurring migraines and would bring it up to the Nurse. From there I could tell the nurse my experience with migraines and some of the ways this article says to help eliminate migraines. Even though I am not one to initiate the order of what happens to the patient, I can use this information that I learned and help the doctor and nurse come up with a plan that I think could be one that would…

In my years as a nurse, and even my very little clinical experience as a DNP student, I have seen many patients suffer from migraines. Personally, I also suffer from severe migraines. There are many different treatments available for migraines right now. Medications from the triptan class of medication such as sumatriptan and rizatriptan are very common medications prescribed to help alleviate the symptoms of a migraine (Epocrates, 2017). In 2009, triptans accounted for just about 80% of antimigraine analgesics that were prescribed at office visits (Smitherman, Burch, Sheikh, & Loder, 2013). Unfortunately, it is becoming more common that medication is not helping alleviate symptoms of a migraine. I had one patient tell me once that they used Botox injections for their migraines and had significant improvement. This got my very interested in this topic, and that is why I chose to…

According to Çiğdem ŞEN1 (2011), “Migraine is a common and disabling disorder that affects roughly 12% of the adult population in western countries”. They go onto say “that 3⁄4 of migraineurs have reported functional incapacity and disability during an attack and more than half of them in need for bed-rest” (p. 466). The Mayo Clinic has described some common symptoms of the migraine as pain on one side or both sides of your head, pain that feels throbbing or pulsing, sensitivity to lights or sounds, and sometimes smells and touch. Additional symptoms are nausea and vomiting, blurred vision and lightheadedness, sometimes followed by fainting. Many workers will call in sick or go home to take care of the headache. This is called absenteeism. Schultz (2009) says “ Absenteeism can be measured by an employee’s time away from work typically consisting of illness-related scattered absences, short- and long-term disability, and workers’ compensation. While absenteeism and disability are significant components of productivity, costs associated with these components are only part of the total cost associated with lost productivity”. (p. 366). Many workers feel…

Patient is a 54-year-old right-handed white female who has a long history of migraine headaches. She states she had headaches as a child. When she started having her menses, they became menstrually related. It would also occur during ovulation. For a while, she was on Topamax and other medications. She went through menopause four years ago with a marked decrease in her migraine frequency. She did note that in her 30's, she had two to three episodes of a migraine with right-sided sensory loss. With the first one, she was admitted for a CVA workup, which was negative. She does not get scintillating scotomas or aphasia with her headaches. She can use Imitrex to get rid of the migraine headache, and…
