Personal Narrative: My Experience With Ralph
I am thankful for my opportunity to work with Ralph over this past semester and the amount of information I have gained from this experience is substantial. Ralph is a fourth grade students who enjoys school and his teachers, when I first met with ralph I thought he was going to be a shy, timid student. I was pleasantly surprised by how much he would warmed up throughout our first session.
My biggest take away from our first session was that Ralph defiantly does not enjoy reading, he would much rather spend his time playing video games or playing outdoors. He’s raw scores showed that he did not care for reading; Recreational Reading Raw Score: 21, Academic Reading Raw Score: 25, Reading Full Scale Raw Score: 46, and Writing Full Scale Raw

The first running record completed was on a 5th grade level where he tested Frustration for word recognition and instructional for comprehension. Mother Cats and Their Kittens is a 4th grade reading level and ralph tested much better with word recognition at independent and comprehension at instructional. Cool Cat is on a 3rd grade reading level and Ralph tested frustration for word recognition. This surprised me because I selected it because it is on a lower level and it is over a topic that he greatly enjoys. I completed a few interactive strategies with Ralph over our different sessions together. He completed a sketch to stretch, story map, contraction worksheet, and we reviewed different vowel combinations. Ralph enjoyed completing all of these things, even the contraction worksheet.
Throughout my case study I have learned that comprehension and fluency are related more so than I thought they were. I can use student’s lack of fluency to enhance their comprehension. I also got hands on experience to assess a student’s reading abilities which an amazing thing for me to have experienced. I got pretty luck with the student I worked with because he was always cooperative and willing to work, which I know this will not always be the case when I assess my

There are many reasons why a student may be struggling with reading comprehension. One possibility could be the student’s low proficiency in reading fluency. When students struggle to decipher the text they are not focusing on gaining knowledge from what is being read. Leading to the fact that all of the students cognitive ability is being focused into properly reciting the correct words while little effort it put into the meaning of what is being read (Woolley, 2010). Another possible reason for reading comprehension problems may also be related to a lack of prior experiences or a lower socio-economic environment (Jitendra & Gajria, 2011). To be skilled in reading comprehension, it is essential for students to be able to associate the text with their own prior knowledge. If a student has had limited experiences or comes from an upbringing that is dissimilar from what is in the text they are reading, comprehension can be an extremely complicated task.…

As years pass and he moves alone out into the world he looses direction and the helping hand. He begins to truly soak everything in around him. I find myself as a person that has always physically moved, touched or seen the object that I needed to finish or do well on. It was always easier. While designing any lesson plan, it is important to keep in mind that what is being done in the classroom affects students when they get out into the real world. Thus educators must prepare students to not only be able to learn on their own but also to feel empowered to do so. Hence, it is important to take into consideration the sociocultural perspectives in order to ensure one is not simply domesticating students for a job. Further, when specifically teaching about comprehension, as with anything, it must not be assumed that students know how to complete a task. Rather educators must focus assignments around comprehensions skills as well as content in order to appropriately teach students the discourse of a particular subject.…

I was easily drawn into the subject matter and examples given, as well as, the personal assessment. When I developed my first spiritual growth plan, I stated that prayer and studying the word of God as the two most important areas that I wanted to work on. These two disciplines have always been a struggle for me, and it is my desire to perfect them that I may become a great leader. My purpose for attending Liberty University is to enhance my spiritual walk with God. After reading the book, I was inspired to spend more time in prayer. All my life, I have been in church, and I have seen how the power of prayer can make the difference in people’s life, and how it can transform a person. Once I read Earley’s book, I was truly convinced that I had to have a consistent prayer life. In the book, he convinced me that if I don’t consistently participate in prayer that it is like saying to God that I don’t believe in the power of prayer. Of course, I do believe in the power of prayer, but actions speak louder than words. I made a promise to improve and work hard to go beyond the first two steps and intercede for the church, my family, and community. Now that I have been given this resource or guide on the importance of prayer and how to pray, I know that I can have a powerful, consistent and effective prayer…

To start the literacy learner study, the student completed an oral reading fluency assessment. This was completed using DIBELS Next (Dynamic Measurement Group, 2013). This student read 22 words per minute with 73% accuracy. According to the DIBELS report, this student requires intensive instruction and scored in red on the assessment. Because the student scored in red, he had to complete an Informal Phonics Inventory (McKenna & Stahl, 2008, p. 125-131). This assessment’s data reveals the areas of strengths and weaknesses of the student’s phonics skills. Using the results from these assessments helped to determine the literacy learner’s independent, instructional, and frustration reading levels (Morris, 2014a). Knowing and understanding these levels helps to guide instructional design and implementation of effective and appropriate activities.…

I had always thought of myself as good with kids, so I decided to try participate in Tuesday Night Tutoring, a program hosted by my school aimed at helping children to read. I naively believed that I could give them a few tips I used when I first learned to read, and at the same time help them to absorb some information from the practice readings, but reality fell very far short of my hopes. I struggled both to convince the children that they were mispronouncing several words and that my pronunciations were any better, and my efforts to explain the meaning of various words only necessitated additional definitions. If they believed me, the children would usually forget everything within a week. I continued trying for almost twenty hours of reading tutoring,…
