Personal Narrative: My Experience In Essex County College
My Experienced In Essex County College

I was not necessarily scared to be judge by my family members, but I was a little worried about the transition from the skate free ways of high school that I was very used to. The schoolwork was not the only thing that was on my mind as I made my way into the college atmosphere; I was also thinking about doing things on my own and budgeting my time completely by myself. When the first week of classes started I was still worried, somewhat, of the step I was going to have to make in regards to the quality of work that I was going to have to do in order to pass with decent grades. In high school I had

The question was always asked by my fellow “ friends” that discriminated my motivation of studying in a college level class because I joined a college that many got accepted but few came out victorious. Well the answer it's actually simple the fact is that the tuition is pretty cheap plus the reputation of a place is not going to define my fate and the desire to become

I began working at Keeter my first semester at College of the Ozarks. On my first day of work, the supervisor handed me a gleaming gold name tag that not only had my name but the state I came from. I watched as others put their nametags on, and I quickly discovered that most of them read Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. I looked down at my nametag and felt a sense of uniqueness, knowing no one in the room had the state of Virginia. I soon began to realize that my nametag sparked curiosity when the guests saw how far I had traveled. Guest after guest would ask the same question, “How did you end up here?” I answered this question dozens of times within a day. There were days that I would begrudgingly tell the Keeter guests my journey to this College, but never once did I fail to cherish the opportunity I was given.…

My time at the community college was used to focus on building a strong academic foundation, specifically tutoring international students English every week as they tried to maneuver through their lives in the United States. I remember during one particular session, a Chinese exchange student told me that when she first arrived in Seattle, she was in a state of euphoria. However, her inability to communicate fluently with her peers hindered her from adapting to the customs in America. Consequently, it impeded her from making her own place in society. Another individual, who emigrated from Eritrea, confessed she was still unfamiliar with having additional resources at her fingertips. She grew up in an area where advanced technological tools,…

It was the morning of move in day. I said goodbye to my home and headed out. I passed the local shopping market and my high school where I enjoyed a fun four years. As I headed to Norman I realized I was leaving everything I had ever known. All my life has consisted of living in the same house, going to school with the same kids, and going to the same supermarkets and restaurants. While I’d like to say I have developed a good idea of the world around me by visiting so many cities around the United States, in reality the only world I’ve ever known is the same one I have spent my whole life in. I have loved growing up in Northwest Oklahoma City with the friends that have helped shaped me into who I am today, however I relished the opportunity…

I know this was my choice, but that didn’t ease the waves of shock that crashed over me when our plane touched down in Chicago. I guess I just wasn’t anticipating the international flight attendant to pretend to misunderstand me , or the thick Texas drawl to first teach me what “y’all” meant in the back of a Taxi cab. Those first few hours here were worrying to say the least.…
