Personal Narrative: My Experience At The Youth Advancement Academy
The agency that provided me with my service learning opportunity was the Youth Advancement Academy. This program serves students in grades nine through twelve who have been expelled from public school or are assigned to the academy by court order. This educational service provides at-risk students with an alternate route to a high school diploma. The program focuses on preparing students for a smooth transition to a traditional high school, post-secondary institution, or workplace services.
Curriculum is computer based in a small classroom setting, led by an instructor for immediate and individual feedback. The schedule is based on a morning and afternoon session, allowing flexibility to the students who have family, work, or responsibilities within the criminal justice system. Since this is a more flexible alternate route to a diploma, this is something most students genuinely want and have an incentive to attend. By utilizing this individualized and technology based program, students have the opportunity to participate in an atmosphere where growth, learning, and success are encouraged.
The academy has recently had a new focus on acquiring more practical life skills that can be helpful with the transition after graduation. There has been a

This category is important because there were a few girls at the academy who were currently pregnant, and there were students who were already parents. For those who were not already parents, it was important to address options for birth control, legal age of consent, and the danger of alcohol and drug use while pregnant. The services provided through Planned Parenthood and WIC were the most important factors of this category. Other important factors discussed were vital signs for a child and when to seek medical attention based on symptoms, consequences of inappropriate activity with the child in the home, and appropriate developmental milestones for a

Upon arriving at The Tulsa Day Center at 8 a.m. I was overwhelmed when I noticed that the line into the building had already surpassed the door and was almost to the parking lot. After weaving through the crowd of people attempting to get inside the building, I explained to the security officers that I was a volunteer and proceeded through the metal detector. The Officer then instructed me to sign in, and pointed me to the clothing room where I would report to Forrest. After a couple of seconds of trying to figure out where I was going I stumbled into the clothing room, and introduced myself to Forrest. He was excited to have some help. He took me over to 3 extra-large laundry baskets and asked me to fold all of the blankets and sheets while…

“Skrt skrt!” The brand new 2003 minivan door slowly slid closed as my mom held my hand. My first day of kindergarten started walking through the rocky terrain up to Jacobson Elementary School on a hot, summer morning. Prepared with my lunch box full of goodies and plaid backpack weighing me down, I walked through the gates to the kindergarten playground. My mom helped me find the girl I met on “Meet the Teacher Night” and stayed close by as we played in the ant-infested, wood chip playground. Then suddenly, in the middle of making a wood chip pancake, the bell rang as if it was taunting me, I knew what was about to happen and so did my mother as I watched her face droop more and more as the bell rang it’s three chimes. My mom walked with me to the wall my teacher designated as the wall to line up on. My hand started to constrict around my mother’s as we approached the wall, as we got closer my knuckles began to turn white. My teacher, Mrs. Priest, announced it was time for the parents to leave.…

Karen was very scared and nervous when she went to YCC, the Youth Conservation Corp. It was an 8 week long paid youth work program during the summer in Isabella, MN in the boundary waters. She was really scared about the ordeal, but wanted to make some money. Some of Karen’s sisters went, so her parents thought she should go, too. Because Karen’s parents thought it was too much time and money to drive her, she had to get a ride with a complete stranger who was also going. Karen’s parents dropped her off a liquor store parking lot in Waverly, MN. Karen was scared and anxious waiting all alone next to Highway 12. I was so focused on the academic aspects of school my freshman and sophomore years’ that i wasn’t active in any of my school’s clubs or activities. I finally decided to get more involved my junior year and I joined nearly every club, participated in every activity, and even went to as many sports events as I could have. I currently am a six year member of the National Beta Club and have held the positions of Vice President of Fundraising and Senior Representative throughout my high school career. Not only am I a leader in the Beta Club, but I participate in the Trailblazer leadership program with the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance and my school’s freshman mentor program. I also joined the TRIO Upward Bound program whose ACT prep helped me to obtain a 22 as my highest ACT score at the time allowing me acceptance into my school’s ACT top 20 Club. As a member of the Grey Highlands Secondary School’s Youth Health Council, I took initiative to start a Pick-Up Sports opportunity for high school students to play recreational sports Friday after school for one hour. I felt that my school environment was lacking in opportunities for students to play uncompetitive sports. Therefore, at a weekly Youth Health Council meeting, I introduced the idea, and it was accepted by all members. Our supervisor talked to our school principal to get approval for the activity to run. Once we got approval, other members of the Council and I talked to the coaches of the school competitive sports teams that were happening at that time to ensure the gym was available Friday after school for recreational sports.…

I have been a student at Macomb Community College for a year, over my academic career here I have learned a lot more than I thought possible. Before I started at Macomb I had already been through two other colleges, but for academic reasons I left those schools. When I finally got to Macomb I had to register for an English class, in which I just happened to get you as my teacher. I thought the class was going to be extremely easy because it was online, and honestly, I thought that I was pretty good at English. As I went through the class I never really paid attention to all the good tips and skills that you were teaching, I just wrote on the topic as I was told. I never practiced on my punctuations, run-on sentences, or even the development…

If I were given the opportunity to change something, I would definitely choose to go back and do over the years I was in high school. During my time there, it was more important for me to do things that were more fun than sitting in class and learning. I thought that being in school was only useful for socializing and passing time. I only went because my parents forced me and so I never put any real effort into it, my adult life suffered very much because of it. Not having a high school education set me back in a lot of ways, and it closed many potentially successful job opportunities. After finally realizing what I lost, I decided to come back to school. I finally see doors opening for me now, that could have been open for me since the beginning…

Although I have served as a leader in everything from the Humane Society to science club, working as a group leader at my school’s cheerleading camp taught me the most! As a summer camp leader, I was entrusted with a group of thirty campers with ages ranging from four to ten as well as a small group of my peers. I was responsible for teaching the mini-campers how to dance, cheer, and tumble, ultimately preparing them for the parent performance. My additional leadership duties included moving the group to stations on time, creating routines, cheers, and games to keep the kids busy, and finally, settling disagreements among the girls. By the end of the experience, I learned teamwork, patience, and how to mix fun with focus, which ultimately…

When I first entered Mercy Learning Center it felt like a positive atmosphere where everyone wants to learn and excel. Everything and everyone had their place; I saw a lot of people walking into their classrooms and faculty members discussing to each other. It felt like I was in a school and the atmosphere also felt safe. I spoke to the receptionist and she called in the Volunteer Coordinator to show me around the building and where I would be helping out. I got placed in the Early Childhood Department, I was a helper to the teacher and her assistant. It was a great experience to get familiar with working with children. These children were the sons/daughters of the mother students in the center. When I was there I noticed that all the women there were trying to build a better life…

Additionally, my strong interests in this field led me to place an interview with a school worker where I was able to learn more about the profession at first hand. On this occasion, I was able to interview Abigail Loboda. Abigail is currently the social worker at Hall Elementary school in Aurora. She currently holds her Professional Educator’s license along with her Master and Bachelor’s in Social Work. The summer before my freshman year, I was recommended to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum of Medicine. This was an amazing organization that would help me explore a future career in the fields of medicine. I was excited about the learning experience, but I was extremely anxious about being by myself for two weeks. The forum was hosted at UNC- Chapel Hill, I was five hours away from my family. I knew I couldn’t just pick up the phone call my mother for help like I normally would. Coming to the realization that I would have to learn to do things on my own was a bit shocking.…

The goals of the Choices into Action Guidance and Career Education Program Policy are threefold: that students develop a good understanding of lifelong learning, relationships and career planning; that they develop learning and social skills, social responsibility and career goals and finally, that they can apply this learning in their lives and at work both within the school and the community. Student development, interpersonal development and career development are three goals that, according to this policy, should relate directly to a school’s guidance and career education program. Students will be able to make connections between what they are learning in the classroom to what they are experiencing in the community which will allow them to better prepare for and adapt to the eventual transitions they will make throughout their lives. This program will enable students to learn self-discipline, personal and social responsibility and respect for others, all of which are important characteristics of a well-balanced, self-sufficient and job-ready successful young adult.…
