Personal Narrative: My Experience At The Chief Academy
I came to the Chiefs Academy with the expectation to just get thru it and check the box. I ended up gaining eight new friends that are very different than myself, but are very similar to myself. Before I arrived at the academy fitness was a few times a week, and a check box. My leadership skills were good, but I honestly had no idea what I was doing. The Chief Academy has been an opportunity to get away and work on myself professional, personal, and improve my leadership skills. The group quickly becomes a unified by participating in trust building exercise. One of them is the famous academy trust fall. These people become your support group while you are away from the unit and home. My group had a great sense of humor that helped get us through school work, and rough times. Work on myself professionally, marriage, and improve my leadership skills. I have met a group of people at the academy that have been there as my support network away from home, for the last five weeks. My group and instructors have helped me to get myself into a little better shape, by pushing me thru scheduled workout programs, and group physical exercise on the weekends “Stephens death march” on the weekends. I learned I can be an effective leader by explaining to junior members the big picture, and relating it to the younger generation. I truly enjoyed my five weeks at Chiefs Academy, and getting away from the world. To the academy staff “Ya’ll have a cool gig, gracias” Labori

The instructors make them question why they are there by pushing them to their limits. The cadets learn there is no time to have mistakes. The one thing on their mind is to graduate and become a Navy Seal. They know that it "pays to be a winner". By the end of the week one almost half of the class is gone because they couldn't take the training or got injured. This makes the cadets still in training feel great about themselves, knowing that they made it longer than others.…

My academic, professional and social skills have increased immensely since I have begun this program. Through this process I have gained a deeper understanding of what this chapter has to offer me. Primarily, a network of men with similar goals and similar backgrounds determined to develop each other. Learning is a lifelong process, and to join this network I would have access to unrivaled mentorship and experience. Furthermore, I would have the opportunity to give the same mentorship back to the newer members of the organization. Lastly,…

It’s funny how we try to fool ourselves into thinking we have any control of our lives. We live with the idea that we have full authority over our choices and our days. In early 1989, My husband, Charles, and I were living in Charleston SC and had just been blessed with our first baby girl. Bringing her home had put my Master’s Degree on hold, and my husband felt that this would be a perfect time for us to move, but I quickly nixed his plan.…

I was awarded a wonderful education at Windham High School, but beyond the information I retained, I also learned what is important in life. At first, I thought all that mattered was the clothes you wore, what makeup you had on, and who you were friends with. There is more to life than all that. I love helping others and my induction into the National Honor Society allowed me to do just that, especially in my four service projects I had the opportunity to lead and be a part of. I try to please people and make sure they are always happy and I now know it is most important to give back to the community who gave me so much.…

One day in seventh grade something wondrous occurred to me. At the end of the school day I was packing my belongings that I would need when I materialized at my house. Though while I was preoccupied, I espied something in my mailbox with my eyes suddenly. In matter of that fact, I decided to walk over to it. I slipped my hand through it and then grasped a letter. In result, my body very slowly went to my seat and I opened it. I couldn’t believe my eyes! I was accepted into the National Junior Honor Society. I was so thrilled that I was going ditzy with my adrenaline rising, at least in a fine way. I started cavorting up and down. My body could not stop jumping, vibrating with joy or talking about my news. So I told all of my friends in my class…

I am an unbridled spirit. I am a Kentuckian to heart, and when I see an opportunity that could potentially change my life, I don’t pass it up. I saw my older sister go through the Gatton Academy and witnessed her experience the richest, most challenging two years of her life. I was first intimidated by the prospect of something so challenging that my sister was having difficult time. But then, as I looked deeper into her journey, it inspired me to experience new things and work harder towards a better future. Before I arrived at NCOA, I wasn’t sure what I was going to learn throughout the course. Some friends told me the course was amazing, while others said it is just a vacation and I should enjoy it. Then, there are the people who just plain hate school and said it was the worst time ever. I tried to keep an open mind about the course, but it becomes difficult when you have so many people telling you so many different things. I tried to put all my opinions and misconceptions aside and give the material a fair chance. I hoped I would learn something new not just for my leadership abilities, but also about myself.…

One of my main reasons for joining JROTC was fist to better myself as a person. JROTC main mission is to “motivate young people to become better citizens”. In the Cadet Creed it’s stated that us as cadets will “Work hard to improve my mind, and strengthen my body”. This is exactly what JROTC has helped me do, with our cadet challenge I’ve maxed out on both my pushups, and sit ups. Another reason for me joining JROTC was because I wanted to be a part of something way larger then myself where I could be given a chance to be in charge or a leader. In this program the cadets run everything from the being in charge of the Tiger Company to the side teams such as Drill Team and the Raider Team.…
