Personal Narrative: My Experience At Oregon Volleyball Academy
I have always done lots of sports, but I had never done volleyball and decided to do Oregon Volleyball Academy (OVA). With all of the good volleyball players that were there, I knew that I might not make a good team, but I didn't think it would be as hard as it was. I have learned that if you don't give up, even if you don't get where you want to be you can still get better.

I was terrified the day tryouts came. When we got into the loud, hot gym, it was crammed with players who I knew had played volleyball for a long time and were really good at it. We started serving and setting and scrimmaging and I did ok at it but definitely wasn't as good as everyone else. Tryouts lasted for a month, and even though I improved a lot I was afraid I wouldn't make a team.

They re-taught us all of the basics and by the time the first tournament came, I had improved a lot. My team ended up not doing very well in the tournament, which was about three weeks later because most of us were struggling with serving. The week after the tournament at practice, I worked really hard to get my serve over but every time it would end up in the net. I kept trying though, until each week I could step back a little bit and get it over from there. I also had to work on my control, which I adventually could do better as well.

At our last tournament, all of us had improved so much that my team actually won a couple of our games, and I finally got a serve over. We were all ecstatic, and our coaches were all really proud of us. After that tournament, the season ended, right as I had started to become a better player. Even though all of my Saturday mornings were taken up by volleyball, I am so glad I decided to do academy because now I am much better at volleyball than I was at tryouts, and I might be able to make a better team next

When I finally reached high school, I did not think that I was good enough to play varsity softball, however I figured that I would just make it on the junior varsity squad. I signed up for volleyball. I have only had two practices. Hitherto, I acquired the skills of passing the ball, serve overhand, and set the ball. I failed to attend the first practice. As a result, I do not know how to properly serve underhand. Practice is every Friday night from six “o” clock to six forty-five at Anderson Farm Park. Moreover drills, we play games. One game I relish is where a person serves the ball to the other side of the net and tries to hit someone. If they are not successful, they have to sit were the ball landed. If they do strike someone, they earn a point. Volleyball is an enjoyable experience.…

I have always strived for my best in everything I do. I never accept failure; however during my sophomore year of high school, I was put through a difficult challenge. I have always dreamt of becoming an athletic student but I have always never gotten a chance because of my discouragement that I would not make the team. In my sophomore year, I decided to try out for the tennis team. I was confident of my status as the new athlete in the Dominion High School tennis team. After the week long try outs, I was given the disappointing news that I had not made the team. I was very disappointed but that did not stop me from continuing to work hard and work on my mistakes. Throughout the summer, I practiced with former Dominion High School tennis players…

It was a frigid, windy, Friday night in October. The only light was the bright and beaming illumination of the stadium lights projecting over the soccer field. The bleachers were full, it seemed as if the whole school was there, and as a freshman with anxiety, it made it hard to cope with the fact, that I was going to be a starter for the varsity soccer team.…

I had joined my church youth choir and loved every moment of it. Then, once middle school came I decided I wanted to continue my music education by joining the band playing the trombone. The next year I decided to try out for the middle school field hockey team and made it. I continued with band and field hockey until my freshman year of high school when I had the intentions of quitting field hockey in order to pursue marching band because no one had ever done both before. I soon came to my senses and decided that not only was I going to continue with both band and field hockey, but I was also going to be the first person to successfully do that. On top of this, I decided I would audition for the school musical and jazz ensemble which would also overlap with the end of the marching band and field hockey seasons. Through much communication with my coaches and band directors, and musical directors I was able to accomplish this for all four years of my high school career and I wouldn't have had it any other…

In 5th grade I was on the best team in the OFA. The coaches were nice and mean but I didn't care. The hard practices did make me better I slammed a 6th grader bigger than me. At football practice the coaches made us run pole to pole which means we all run like 400 yards. At every football practice I got hurt in some way. We won every game the last game aka the championship game it was 6 to 7.…

Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…

After boosting myself up, I finally decided to try out. I was told we would have a new coach. I was a little scared that we wouldn’t have our old coach anymore. Also, when the team was mad a little after, our old coach came back just in time. Knowing that if we had a chance to get our old coach back was wonderful. Because nothing would be the same. Every sport and routines are different from the beginning to the end whole different start.…

I joined MYB in 5th grade. I wanted more of a competition league after coming from Upward basketball. The first year my team was horrible and everyone went their separate ways after the season. I joined Dave Buffenbarger’s team the following year hoping for a better outcome. A lot of the girls on that team were some of my close friends, and some were not. This was not a problem as we quickly became close. MYB gave me the chance to make new friends through their league and become even closer with my old friends. With a few players always coming and going after each season, I ended up playing for Dave up until my senior year. Being on Dave’s team for so long gave me the chance to grow close to my teammates. Being with my team for many years and…

Later in my high school career, now bigger and stronger, I tried out for an elite summer softball team. My new coach was unlike any coach I had had before. He would scream in my face, and point out my flaws in front of the entire team. However, most importantly, he challenged me to grow as a person and to confront my biggest fear, which is failure. He pushed me to my limits, making me want to quit and wishing I had never played the game. Despite these challenges, I persevered and became mentally and physically…

I had the chance to work with adults and children. At the start of the day the very first thing that came to mind was that maybe I could eventually be working for the OVA. I was so excited to see what it would be like to be in the shoes of someone who does something I may want to pursue in life. I personally feel like I had an impact on many people throughout the day. There were over fifty 13u girls trying out and I could tell many were extremely nervous and intimidated by the other girls. So, as a volunteer I felt like it was my responsibility to make them feel welcomed and comfortable in that environment. When athletes arrived, I would try and look for girls who looked lost or nervous and I would introduce myself to make them feel more welcomed and sometimes I would even ask if they wanted to warm up with me until they found a partner. By doing that I hope I made them feel more comfortable in the surroundings. I also feel like I may have impacted some of the young girls when I was in the gym helping the coaches. Whenever I saw something wrong I would pull aside the girl/girls and try and fix their technique, which should hopefully help them in the future. Personally, I did not have any specific questions going into this volunteer experience. Since I have been playing volleyball for 6 years I felt confident with the roles I took on. The…
