Personal Narrative: My Experience As An Arab Student
Monday 04/17/2017 my friend Rachel asked me for a favor on behalf of her professor Dr. Dena Kniess for a multicultural course for graduate students. To be a part of a panel discussion on Arab students. Rachel asked me to talk about my experience as an Arab student at EIU and told me a bit about what I should expect from the students. At first, between me and myself I was a bit afraid and nervous. I was going to say “sorry Rachel, I can’t make it”. But then, I’m like “no I’ll make it, it’s definitely a good opportunity and who else can make it better than me?” so I told her SUREEEE!! Went to Buzzard Hall at 4:00 pm. The students just kept on coming, I was smiling all the time, stressed and nervous. I texted my family to pray for me as my nervousness …show more content…
We talked about things I can never imagine myself talking about. I have discovered new things about myself. How much I love and appreciate my family, how much I’m thankful for being a part of EIU, how much I have changed in 4 months. And honestly, I can’t wait to see myself after 3 years.
Rachel apologized for me for being the only speaker in the panel and thought that it was a pressure on me with all the questions from the students and thought it was awkward for me. In fact, I was extremely proud of myself and I can’t thank Rachel enough for giving me this opportunity to share my study abroad experience with them. I didn’t know that I have too much to say until

I dreaded the alarm that woke me up at 6:30 in the morning. It was as loud as a screaming toddler that could be heard for miles. I groggily got out of bed and got ready for my first day of school. It was a weird feeling not putting on a uniform like I had been for the past nine years, but I also enjoyed that freedom. The nervousness became more and more intense as I could closer and closer to campus. When we arrived, I got out of the car, and watched my dad drive off to go take my younger sister to school. There was no going back now; I had no other choice than to walk through those doors. I felt like my throat was in my stomach. I noticed some familiar faces, and I walked towards them. While I was approaching my friends, a senior, facing toward me, walked passed. He must have been at least six feet tall, which was incredibly intimidating for me at just over five feet. I was not used to the fact that I’d potentially have classes with these giants. Additionally, the array of new teachers, and having to learn all of their teaching styles and things they did or did not tolerate was hard in…

I was in another room with the other students answering questions about their upcoming exam. I reminded the students to breathe in and out before starting the exam. I also shared with them my before exam routine. Also to make sure to get enough sleep. I feel as if the students are comfortable with me. After the professor was done with midterm evaluations the students were dismissed. The professor and I went over next week’s presentation on the video “No Mas Bebes”. The video tells the story of a little-known but landmark event in reproductive justice, when a small group of Mexican immigrant women sued county doctors, the state, and the U.S. government after they were sterilized while giving birth at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center during the late 1960s and early 1970s. I look forward to presenting it next…

I had arrived so early that only one other person was waiting. He remarked, "We still have a half an hour to wait, I guess we should not have been so early!" Eventually, the instructor arrived and everyone went in and sat down. Once we were all seated I was reassured to see other people my age in the class. It was a great feeling once class got started. The instructor seemed helpful and encouraging. After the class was over, all the distress and fear I had possessed before class had gone and was replaced with a new worry, a healthy one that gave me confidence and made me feel driven.…

Although I have made the choice not to stay at IUPUC all four years of my college career, being here my first semester has started me off great. During this event they spoke of how we start and end our four years in the same way. I am just glad I have been able to enjoy my first semester by making some new friends, learning new strategies to working and figuring my life out.…

I began working at Keeter my first semester at College of the Ozarks. On my first day of work, the supervisor handed me a gleaming gold name tag that not only had my name but the state I came from. I watched as others put their nametags on, and I quickly discovered that most of them read Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. I looked down at my nametag and felt a sense of uniqueness, knowing no one in the room had the state of Virginia. I soon began to realize that my nametag sparked curiosity when the guests saw how far I had traveled. Guest after guest would ask the same question, “How did you end up here?” I answered this question dozens of times within a day. There were days that I would begrudgingly tell the Keeter guests my journey to this College, but never once did I fail to cherish the opportunity I was given.…

Growing up in a diverse city, the culture around me has always been different. Every person that I see always has a different type of belief than me. I’m a 17 year old Muslim student who lives in Southeast Texas. My father is from the Middle East, and my mother is from Western Europe. My parents migrated as refugees from Croatia to Houston in 1995 due to the ongoing war in Yugoslavia. After they’ve migrated they’ve lived in peace here ever since. However that has changed a lot since 9/11, one of the biggest terrorist attacks in history to ever happen in the United States. Now everyone who originates from the Middle East has been looked at as an abomination, and how we're judged for everything that we believe in. It just happens to be that I was born in the time of all of this monstrosity.…
