Personal Narrative: My Experience As A SI Leader
When I got my first job as a supplemental instruction leader last year, I was excited as much as I was terrified. Since coming to the US in 2012, I had never held a job, therefore I did not have any experience with the responsibility of being a paid employee. I had been in different leadership positions, but none came with the scrutiny of a job. Nonetheless, I enjoyed my experience working as an SI leader. The knowledge that my colleagues at work are also students, made it easier for me to seek help from them, when I needed guidance. The professional development days we had, taught me to open up more to others about challenges that I have faced, and continue to face on the job and otherwise. I learned to be flexible, to adapt to unforeseen

My personal mission statement is to be the best that I can be and work hard to help others be the best they can be. This statement is important to me because I have always found that I am at my best when I am helping people, whether its helping people at my job or at the grocery store. There are many things that fall into place with that, which to me, mainly includes education, because I am a student and I work in a college where I work with students and I listen to their problems and relate to them. So education is very important in general, but to me Community and Industry Education is very important and important to a lot of people. First off I have attended Tarrant County College and I have gained so much from that experience. I have gained…

When I moved from the eastside to the westside of Dearborn in 2006, I felt distraught. I barely knew anyone that went to Bryant Middle School. I wanted to return home and talk to my friends that went to Woodworth Middle School, in East Dearborn. To comfort me with a pet, my brothers took me along with them to the Dearborn Animal Shelter. We combed through several cages containing cats; we saw an adorable three-legged cat, a beautiful calico cat, and some cute white kittens. We then came upon a cage containing a small white and black cat named Ring Leader. Ring Leader was 5 months old at the time. He was lightly shedding, climbing over the shelter worker, and feverishly looking around. Ring Leader seemed like an energetic and fun cat, so I chose…

People often ask me, “do you play basketball or volleyball? Because you’re really tall.” As a six-foot-tall girl, I find that people are disappointed when I tell them “no, not anymore.” I was always told by coaches and parents that “you have potential,” but basketball, much to my dad’s dismay, was not for me. I found that I had the potential to do something with my life, to be someone bigger than myself. My freshman and sophomore years, I did not want to be involved in my school. Rather I wanted to get in and get out and go to college. But all that changed when I decided I wanted to be a Link Crew Leader, at the time I did not know what it meant to be a link leader, I just knew I wanted to be one.…

Growing up, I was always viewed as a person that didn’t like any type of socialization. I was portrayed as a quiet, nerdy, reserved individual that had very limited conversations with those around me. Unfortunately, the people that said this about me were wrong. In reality, if I were to describe myself to someone that doesn’t know me, I would tell them that I’m a very outgoing, laid back, intelligent, trustworthy, responsible, friendly, funny, outspoken, and social individual.…

During my freshman year of high school, I didn’t even know what the Student Government was. I had no idea that, three years later I would be elected as the first one year SGA President (this means I was only in SGA for one year before becoming president, previous presidents have had two years of experience). I started off high school lost and afraid of the world in front of me. Like many students, I struggled to keep myself together mentally and physically. I didn’t really know what I liked or what really interested me. It wasn’t until my junior year that I found something that I connected with. I’ve always been in love with my school and its spirit. Every year I would go all out for spirit week, and I was that one kid that stood out from everyone…

During the summer before my senior year of high school, I was involved in one of the most influential opportunities I had ever encountered. I was given the chance to volunteer my time at Schneck Medical Center. I chose to volunteer in the rehabilitation department; this helped fuel my desire to want to become a physical therapist. While at the rehabilitation center, I got involved in multiple positions that taught me how to be a better leader and how to successfully use teamwork. Working in the office taught me leadership roles. While in the office, I had to check the patients in for their appointments and paged therapists for their appointments. This position showed me how to take charge and make sure that things in the rehabilitation center…

This week reminded me how amazing and important my job is. Friday was a busy day at the office; I was rushing to finish my work so I could leave on time. As I was about to leave I received a phone call from a hiring manager (Mark) with NOAA. Mark had questions about the interview process and was calling to speak to one of my colleagues. Unfortunately, my colleague was on vacation and wouldn’t be back for another week. I looked at the clock and realized it was time to go but I could hear the frustration in Mark’s voice. Instead of leaving, I spent almost an hour listening to Mark’s concerns, answering his questions, and I explained how the federal hiring process works. At the end of our conversation, Mark thanked me for my time and he told me…
