Personal Narrative: My Experience As A Key Club
It was my first year as a Key Club member and my excitement for Fall Rally North was insatiable. Every year, Key Club members from all over the San Francisco Bay Area gather at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom to show off their spirit for their respective division through cheers, spirit battles, and overall friendliness. As I sat on the bus seat, anticipating what was to come, I was also worried. Will I be able to meet new people? Will I have the courage to say “hi” to others, or will I be the one who gets said “hi” to? The park came in sight and immediately my worries dissipated and instead, transfigured into feelings of adrenaline and elation.

Thousands of Key Clubbers, wearing different colors and from different areas, flooded every part of the amusement park. I stepped off the bus, took in a deep breath of air, and then I knew, I was ready. I transcended the state of an individual and became one with my division--with every step onto the black pavement towards the park, our spirit augmented. I cheered, sang, and laughed with my club members until we reached the stadium, where we were to compete with other divisions for the spirit stick, the ultimate recognition for the most spirited

Beforehand, I was the kid that never initiated conversations and frankly, meeting new people made me uncomfortable. However, as an active member of my community, my shell of awkwardness and seclusiveness slowly broke down with every service event that I was a part of. I waited for the first time in Freshman year during a charity dinner and the gratitude I received back was quite astounding to me. They all shook my hand, had bright smiles, and one man specifically thanked me for making his night. While my guests experienced joy through my waiting, I experienced likewise from their response. Instead of a risk for an embarrassing situation, I realized that helping people brought me genuine

Since I was a kid I’ve noticed my home town of Pomona, CA had areas that were roughed up. Whenever I passed through main streets like Holt Avenue I could see sidewalks filled with homeless people & damaged property. Seeing my city in bad shape sparked something in me & I knew I wanted help better the city & give back to it but wasn’t really sure how to contribute up until high school. Sophomore year in high school I joined Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán, MEChA, I was introduced into this club by a friend that was actively involved in it. MEChA’s main focus in the community was to help the Spanish speaking people within the community that were in need of help in school. Another club that I joined that year was Key Club International.…

Up until this point, my life has been particularly uneventful. After my father was stationed at Fort Indian Town Gap, my family moved to the small town of Annville Pennsylvania when I was five. Being that there was not much to do in such a small farm town, I started to join clubs in middle school in order to occupy my time. Through these clubs I completely changed. I transformed into a person who is a leader and is confident in their own abilities.…

My group forming experience begins every new school year when the math and business teachers come together to form the math/business department. The school has several departments but this particular department is headed by me. This year is comprised of twelve members. This is quite lagre according to S. Robbins et al, (2013) who states that the most effective teams have 5 – 9 members. Most experts suggest using the smallest number of people who can do the task. So there in lies the challenge. The forming stage puts together all the teachers who teach math and or business. The leader is selected by the principal. The storming stage commences with a number of department meetings to plan and structure the entire school year with plans to have…

However, as I walked out of the counseling room and was finally able to absorb and sort through all the strengths and growth opportunities that was about my role as the group leader, it dawn to me how ineffective of a group leader I was. This gut punching feelings made me question whether or not this career path was suited for me. By not processing certain thoughts with members or challenging them was a disservice for them. I was so consume with this disgusted feeling that I sat in my car in the school parking lot for half an hour just sitting with my thoughts and feelings. I know that I am my worst critic…

Before I started doing community service I really didn’t care about others. I was just in my own world and just doing things that weren’t that beneficial for me and others. But that changed once I started to know other people’s situations. Realizing what the people who I was helping went through helped me have a change of heart. It made me care about others and understand how they felt.…

In my Senior Year of being in the National Honor Society, I was excited to volunteer and to help those in need. I helped out with a soup kitchen in Brainerd through another organization that I am in, the Student Council. As I scooped soup into bowls and placed them onto people’s trays, I could see a look of appreciation and gratitude on their faces. This was the first time in my National Honor Society career where I understood just how much my time and effort meant to these individuals. This volunteer opportunity made me realize that a simple meal, smile, and effort to do something helpful and nice can really make someone’s day brighter or easier.…

As soon as I arrived within the enormous gates of Busch Gardens, the first thing I witnessed was the gigantic roller coasters hanging over the heads of random people like a venomous snake lurking for its next prey. The shrieks of the people on the rides gave me an adrenaline rush as I stood staring at the massive machines as they soared through the rails. The first ride I went for was wooden, which was one of the most dangerous rides in the park. As I sat and waited in line, I could hear the screeching of the metal as the ride took off, making most people ahead of me coward in fear as they shoved their flip-flops in their backpacks and turned around leaving the line. There were no harnesses to strap across the chest; the hard, metal bar and loose seat belt were your only tools of protection from a fatal fall. As the ride took off, I extended my arms within in the air while the G-force from the immense drop pulled my body tighter against the hard, metal seat of the ride. The hot sun beamed against my face as the ride climbed to its peak until finally dropping again. Although the ride was extremely fast and shaky, I only continued to smile and laugh at my peers who were both teary-eyed and exhausted from the horrific screaming and panicking. As I left, my peers and I walked through the gift shop exit, suddenly stopping…

Near the holiday, we set up a Halloween party for the homeless at Morning Star and the neighborhood children. In this event, food was passed out to those people sitting there cold and alone. Some people even donated clothing to them, so by the end of the night, they were filled with warmth which came apparent from the smiles they flashed. I have learned to uphold a greater respect for others than I did four years ago. Some people may hold less respect for these people by the little that they are able to offer, but I gained even more because they’re there accepting help when in their position and some wouldn’t even show their faces. It wasn’t much that we were able to change, but our small deed made them happy even if it was just for a night which they expressed their bountiful…

“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” This quote by Oliver Wendall Holmes can be applied to numerous situations in our lives. Throughout my whole life, I rarely ever did community service. Though I went to nursing homes and sang carols during Christmas, I really never considered it to be true volunteer work. I was usually too busy to have any spare time to volunteer and when I did have spare time, volunteer work was never the first thing on my mind. Volunteering last Wednesday, however, did stretch my mind. Because this was my first instance of true volunteer work, everything about it was a new experience. I chose to volunteer to work the table at the blood drive at the Recreational Center because I’ve donated blood before and feel that it is very helpful and necessary to the process of saving lives. Working “behind the scenes” of the blood drive was different though. By sitting there and helping out the donors and handing out snacks afterwards, I got to see the donor community in a different way. Not only that, but a lot of times, I found it to be my responsibility to assure donors that the process was quite easy and painless. Many people came in looking unsure about whether or not they would really donate and these were the people I spent the most time talking to. My “old dimensions” were the thoughts that blood drives just easily happened; people showed up, they donated and that was all that was to it. Volunteering at the blood drive helped me better understand that things like this wouldn’t be possible if there weren’t people to volunteer at them and help everything run smoothly. By my mind being stretched by this experience, I’ve learned that even only helping out for a few hours can go a long way. I feel so much differently about volunteer work now; instead of it being a burden that I’ve been “sentenced to”, it is actually an easy way to give back to the community. On the day of the blood drive, I collected…

The final seconds before I took the stage gave me the clearest insight into FBLA’s impact on me. Usually the moment before walking on stage was like when I would look down from the top of the water slide with my friends at the bottom goaded me to go; pure fear. Yet, this moment was different. I was calm, composed, at an equilibrium. When I walked on stage and bellowed “Good evening FBLA!”, the smile was sincere, not forced through a fright-stricken face as I had done two years ago. My trials and success in FBLA had prepared me for this moment.…
