My writing process is usually all over the place, I have to be in my room with my door shut, my music on, my fan on, and my television on, weird, I know, but that is what I have to do in order to keep myself concentrated. After I am all situated I begin by writing down different ideas on a couple sheets of paper, listing ways I could support this idea and how it relates to my topic, sometimes when I am stuck I look up sample essays online to help me out of my rut. Once I finally choose an idea I start writing the first things that pop into my head down on another sheet of paper, it usually ends up being a jumbled mess that only I can understand. After all of my ideas are laid out onto the paper I begin placing numbers beside them so I know…

Overall, my experience taking English 106-H was fulfilled and I truly enjoyed my time in class. What were once weaknesses, slowly, but surely became strengths. Thus, it was through my weaknesses that helped me develop my writing skills, making me a stronger writer. Through free writing, word traps, and ideas of my own, I was able to implement those strategies into my writing. Nevertheless, I have reached my goal, but still will continue to strive for even stronger writing through out all of my courses at Lycoming College.…

One of the most challenging things a person can experience is leaving everything you’ve ever known behind and starting completely over somewhere else. Eva does this in the Lost in Translation by moving from Poland all the way to Canada when she is just a teenager. When I was sixteen years old my family moved from Minnesota to Texas. This isn’t quite as drastic of a change as in Lost in Translation, but many of the things Eva experienced I can relate with even if I just crossed numerous state line borders. Eva says “My mother says I’m becoming “English.” This hurts me, because I know she means I’m becoming cold.” I’ve realized as I’ve lived in Texas for the last four years I’ve started to say stuff and do things I would have never done in Minnesota.…

Have you ever been so sure of something that the simple consideration of the opposite seems to overwhelm you? I have been; or, I had been. Since the age of ten, I had considered myself bilingual. This course has given me an increasingly wide opportunity to acknowledge the fact that speaking a language does not necessarily mean I have sufficient tools to write in it. In fact, I have noticed many misconceptions, errors, and even some atrocities.…

I don't remember specifics on how I learned to read, but I do remember learning how to read at an early age. My mother was an elementary school teacher and spent a lot of time working with me on my letters and sounds. I remember doing a lot of flashcards with my mom on the different letters and phonemes. I also remember my mom reading to me a lot, especially at night. I would sit in her lap and follow along as she read. As I became a better reader my mom would stop at different words and let me read. I always enjoyed reading with my mom and was excited when I could actually read the words with her.…

I plan to take a writing class at a local college to expand on what I have learned from the writing center. Currently, I am looking for a class that will fit my work schedule and budget. The goal is to improve my writing so I can have my prospectus approved.…

In all seriousness, my writing is garbage, but it some what improved the slightest bit because I had a professor who actually knows how to teach a English class and not give little hints on telling us if our paper was trash. Instead, we were told straight if it was a good paper or not and it has probably helped me improve the most. In High School, I was always told that my papers were “good,” thankfully I finally had a Professor who can give it to me straight and tell us how we can improve our writing. On all the RRs, RWL, and formal essays that I have written these past twelve weeks, I have gotten educational criticism that has helped my pathetic writing become less pathetic and somewhat college worthy writing.…

Growing up in a neighborhood where you were automatically labeled a “screw-up” or a criminal has affected my peers and I in negative way. Many generations before mine have been discouraged to further their education, simply because of the marginalization of our ethnicity and the neighborhood where we have grown up. There is a disconnection between the language of my education and the language of my culture simply because in the schools my peers and I attend, we are not pushed enough to realize our full potential. Meanwhile at home, [most being hispanic] we are told that furthering our education is the most valuable thing we do have in life. In our hispanic families, we have a lot of support to follow our dreams and do whatever we need to in order to be successful, and although that is very helpful for many, it can only do so much. If we were pushed like this by the rest of the world and not treated as though we do not deserve to be successful, we would push to do our very best all the time.…

Although my household is Spanish speaking, my parents were not able to get an advanced educations so as to teach me how to properly write in Spanish. So when we began working on this project, I was incredibly self conscious and afraid that it would not be as great as my other writing. It’s incredibly obvious when I write in Spanish that my dominant tongue is English. But to my surprise, my teacher was actually very impressed in how I did on the project. It was of course not perfect, but it helped me realize that there was no reason to be so doubtful in my writing. It was a lot of fun being able to experiment with a language that I have lived with for so long. I have never written creatively in Spanish, and found it challenging but also very…

One day, I was out with my family at a French bakery. As I opened the door, the sweet scent of baked goods entered my nostrils, an old man approached and he said thank you in a strong thick French accent. I asked the old man if he was French and he replied with “oui je suis français”( yes i'm French). I responded with “ Je ne suis pas français mais je peux parle français”( I'm not French but I can speak French) . His brown eyes widened and as his mouth slowly opened with shock, I gave him a small smile. He said he didn't expect to get a response in French and he asked if my parents were French I said no, my mom is from Mexico, so he asked how I knew French, then I explained that I take French in my high school. The old man said “Your French is excellent for you to not be a native speaker and you've developed the accent.”…

Everyday people learn how to be a better English writer and it is successful because mostly everyone in the United States speaks English. In my experience, I’m learning how to become a better English writer everyday by reading books and writing essays. I’ve taken English 60A, English 60B, and now I’m taking English 50. Writing essays and reading article’s in English 50 helps me to become a stronger writer. In my portfolio I am going to edit my best essay that I did in class and I am also going to revise my biggest challenged essay. Although I use speak and write in English everyday in the world, I am still learning how to become a better writer. My experience as a writer in English has grown since the first day in English by learning to use sources in an essay, how to cite properly, to write 650-1000 word essays, and to critique my classmates work.…

Thinking of creative ways on how to develop my paper is a strong suit I benefit while taking on a writing assignment. When given a topic to write about, I write down what comes into my head. I do not worry about the word count if the sentences make sense on paper or even punctuation. I write to avoid forget any important points I might have thought of. This method of writing is where my weaknesses show. Sometimes what I wrote makes sense in my head, but not on paper. Other challenges I face with writing assignments are time management and punctuation.…

Throughout the year, my writing has had significant improvements, compared to where I began. First, I began this semester fairly confident in my writing abilities. I thought that I had a strong grasp on writing concepts that include: transition words, literary devices, proper grammar techniques, correct paper writing format. In contrast, I felt that I began the year with a weak vocabulary, which has always been one of my weaker areas, If I were to rank myself on day one of class, without knowing all of the material we were going to cover, I would rank my writing skills an eight out of ten.…

It’s always on the back of my mind, and resurfaces to my thoughts when I’m in any social setting regarding Spanish—my second language. I am 3/4 Puerto Rican and 1/4 European, though my pigment carried from the European side, as I have the typical blonde hair and blue eyes. My father was born in Puerto Rico and my mother, although being born here, her mother was Czechoslovakian and Polish, my mother’s father was born in Puerto Rico much like my own father. It always boggles me why I don’t look more Spanish due to the more Spanish heritage I contain. When people see me, they only see my pigment—white. They don’t see the Spanish part, supposedly, until I tell them; then they give me a “Right” or “I see it now” as if they’ve known all along.…

By using my Life-long Learner goals, I developed many traits that got me into the habit of using Spanish in my everyday routine. My first Life-long Learner goal was that I would talk to my friends who are taking the same Middlebury spanish course as I am. I did this every day during the school week. We discussed the online course, our other classes, and everything about our days. It really helped me maintain practice and awareness of the Spanish language. It was very fun to communicate without using my first language. My second Life-long Learner goal was that I would look on different Spanish websites, news articles, music and websites. I thought that this was really fun to do because it allowed me to use the language for someting other than…
