Personal Narrative: My Dad's Home
The pickup’s engine roars to life when my Dad turned it on. I was in my room packing. I was deciding what to take camping? I was thinking to myself that I should take a first aid kit, a flashlight, a sleeping bag, and some water. When I finished packing my bag. I was thinking to myself, my parents should do the rest. I mean I got all I need.
My mom calls out to me; “Connor hurry up we should have left already.”
I run from my room with my backpack downstairs and out the door.
“Your dad is calling you outside to help him.”
I nodded, and I started putting my shoes on. When I finished, I walked outside. I called out to my dad. “ Where you at?”
“I am right here,” Dad said behind the pickup.
I walked behind the pickup. I see him loading the kayaks

I picked up a picture of my old dog max. I barely knew him. I put the picture down and looked at my drawers. I saw a sock sticking out of the top of the drawer. I turned around and looked at my closet tidy and clean… Perfect.
“Connor, your Dad has your present,” my mom yelled outside.
I forgot all about my present I ran outside in a hurry that I forgot to put my shoes on. I felt the cool damp grass, soak my socks. When I looked up my smile faded. My dad was carrying a dog. “What are you going to call him?” Dad said.
I thought to myself, what should I call him? Then, all of a sudden the name can out.
“Dad I want to call him Keith,” I said. My dad said
“are you sure about that.” with a concerned look on his face.
“Yes, dad, like never before,” even though I didn’t care. “Well, okay Connor hurry up and get your stuff we are about to leave.” Day 2 9:30 am
It is the next day of waiting in the car when we got to the campground. The sun is out and it is peeking over the horizon. I got Keith’s leash and I put on Keith’s collar. I opened the door and Keith hopped out the car. He started sniffing the gravel road and then he sneezed. My Dad jumped out the pickup, stretching like he just woke up from a nap.
“That feels much better,” Dad

Keith kept looking at a bush.
“What are you looking at boy. what do you smell,” I say in a goofy way.
I was getting the hang of having Keith as my dog, but something tells me he’s worthless. I let him pull me and goes to a tree. He starts sniffing it and then he looks at me. It takes me a while to realize that he is telling me to look the other way. I do turn the other way and I hear a noise that sounds like water hitting something and then I smelled a foul odor. I knew what it was and I didn’t want to turn around. The noise stops and I see Keith’s head pop from the side of my leg and then he pulls me again to my

I spent a great amount of time trying to decipher how to get the car to start. Meanwhile, Joe just sat there by the side of the road eating crackers. “We’d be on our way now if you would just call a tow truck!!” he yelled. I paid him no mind, that’s all he ever does anyway, talk. Yet, he was right. I couldn’t afford a tow truck, I was still waiting on my next paycheck, since the last one finished the next day after I cashed it. I leaned against the trunk of my car, I looked down at my shoes they were…

We were almost through the state of North Carolina as we traveled on Interstate 95. It was rush hour and you could tell everyone was antsy and excited to get home. Cars traveled at 80 miles per hour, and some were even traveling faster than that. I could now see why it was ranked the fifth worst highway in North America. Cars were weaving in and out of traffic at over 90 miles per hour. Traffic was getting heavy. Listening to the radio, my dad and I sang along to a familiar song we both knew, “Yeah” by Usher. “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!”, we both sang while he drove. My dad always loved this song, so we had the radio turned almost all the way up. The song ended and we turned the radio down. We had already been on the road for ten hours so we were beginning to get a little tired. It was almost 5:00 in the evening and we did not eat lunch, so we were both getting hungry as well. “Where do you want to stop for dinner?”, I asked him. My dad looked at the food signs next to the highway as I looked up places on my phone where we could grab a bite. Just as I was about to name off a few places where we could go, my phone flew out of my hand and my head jolted forward.…

I take the keys and get into the driver's seat, I turn the car on and put it into reverse, and almost hit a tree backing out. “Slow down” my dad says. I back out slower and shift into drive and pull out really slow. We turn left and I hug the right side, my dad says, “don't go into the ditch.” I'm getting used to driving by now and then I see it, it’s big, red, and slow, a tractor, right by a right turn. My dad says, “just keep driving…

“Even though Dad’s coffin was empty, his closet was full. And even after more than a year, it still smelled like shaving. I touched all his white t-shirts. On a beautiful day in 2013 my horse had a horrible accident. The horses were in the middle pasture grazing when I left for school. It happened to be that this day my mom went to work at the NRCS that August day, and parts were needed on the ranch, therefore my dad left for Pierre a little bit later that morning. When I walked out of school, and sat in the pickup, my mom and I went to the Cenex, and exclaimed to me that my dad is coming with my horse, he is cut. We took him to the vet out in rapid, and I hoped he would be okay.…

I awoke to the slamming of the front door, remembering that it was Sunday, my dad's favorite day of the year, the first day of hunting season. I jump out of bed and stumble down the stairs waking everybody else in the house up. Looking out the window I see my dad pull away in his big red pickup truck with the sleeve of his orange hunting jacket hanging out the window. Hoping he brings home dinner, I start to make myself breakfast, I make my dad's favorite; eggs with crispy bacon. As I'm cooking breakfast I think to myself, I wished I had gotten up earlier to say bye to him, or even go out with him. It was a beautiful day to go out hunting and I had never missed the first day of the season before. It was like a tradition he and I had, we would always go out and hunt together. My dad and I had a relationship that not many fathers and daughters had; we really enjoyed spending time together doing things outside that not many people like to do. Losing my train of thought, I look down at the pan of charred eggs and sigh. Nothing went like planned today, I thought.…
