Personal Narrative: My Congressional Representative Steve Russell
I live in NW Oklahoma City, so my Congressional representative is Steve Russell of the 5th District. He has a wife and five children and was born in Choctaw, OK. He received a MA in History at Command and General Staff College and a BA in Public Speaking at Ouachita Baptist University in 1985. He served in the US Army from 1985-2006 as a lieutenant colonel, he was a military adviser, a political speaker, and a business owner. I am surprised that he could be a US Representative without ever getting a degree in law. Steve Russell receives monetary contributions from groups such as from Bancfirst, Devon Energy, and Majority Cmte PAC. The sectors he receives the most money from are the Single-Issue, Real Estate, and Energy/Natural Resources. What surprises me is that he receives a large amount of money from real estate groups. How this could be the case is that since he is a business owner, he could deal with a lot of real estate companies to expand his business. The industries where Russell receives the most monetary contributions are Leadership PACs, Oil & Gas, and Retired people. I am not surprised that Oil & Gas are one of his biggest supporters because he is a representative in Oklahoma and Oil & Gas is the biggest companies in the state. During the midterm elections, he funded his campaign through donations and his own wallet. By not taking money from special interest lobbyists, he hopes to gain the trust of votes that his decisions in office will not be influenced by high donating corporations. He has made a point of calling out Lieutenant Governor Todd Lamb for accepting gifts from lobbyists. On Twitter, he has posted a video about Todd Lamb, asking “Can Oklahoma afford another four years of Mary’s Little Lamb?” This depicts his opponent as weak and unfit to be governor. On his campaign website, there is a whole page dedicated to the hypocrisy of Todd Lamb’s “Reform in Government” plan. On GaryRichardson.org, one can find his Kitchen Table Plan which states how he plans to fund Oklahoma’s government without raising taxes along with his stance on other…

But is Ted Cruz's assertion that he is the "grassroots" candidate truly accurate? Announcing his campaign's fundraising gains is slightly misleading because it does not take into account the PACs and super PACs that are also fundraising on his behalf. Overall, the aggregate amount of money backing Ted Cruz is estimated to be about $51 million, a large portion of that coming, not from grassroots donors, but big money donors giving to the super PACs that support him. According to CNN, "A leader of those groups told CNN in June that it had raised more than $37 million thanks to a few big…

After careful consideration, I have selected Mississippi State Senator Chris Massey (R-Hernando) to interview about the topic of federalism. Senator Massey is a first term state senator from the first district. The first district is made up the entire city of Hernando. Senator Massey is self-described “new to politics”. He has served in the past has president of the Mississippi association of builders. He is a builder by profession and resides in northern Hernando. Senator Massey stated the most important reason why he decided to involved in politics was education. Senator Massey made education the main focus of his campaign against former State Senator Doug Davis (R-Hernando) and loves to talk about it. My rite of passage was coming to Randolph-Macon. As I arrived at Randolph-Macon College on September 1st to begin my freshman year of college, I could not do anything but shake from being so nervous. My parents kept telling me that everything would come together and I would fit right in. I had never felt so out of place. Coming from a small private school, with a graduating class of 30, I could not bear to meet a freshman class that was as bigger than my hometown or my k-12 school. It was like I was a nightmare and no matter how many times I pinched myself, I could not wake up. I was trapped here without any friends or a vehicle to escape.…
