Personal Narrative: My Community Interaction
I accomplished talking to the local elderly community of the area about various topics such as Tylenol, carbon monoxide, and Naloxone. I worked with a group of other students to present a poster on these topics as well as distribute handouts on these topics. We were aware that people can easily get bored so we did our best to communicate the most essential, concise, and important points about our topics. We also had Dr. VanWert with us to answer questions that we were unable to answer.
This experience benefited me as I got to talk to various elderly people about their lives. Sometimes the person would stop by the poster, ask a question, and then talk about something not really related to the topics presented. These were the interactions I

I learned that everyone has their own unique experiences to tell. One of my favorite interactions was when I spoke to an elderly man who was a street preacher. He spoke to me about his ministry. It really opened my eyes to the unique types of people like this who I had no idea existed. My favorite interaction was with a 98-year-old woman. She was with her daughter who took care of her. The daughter spoke to my classmate and I about the struggles of taking care of her mother. I was then blessed to talk to this 98-year-old woman. I asked her questions (how to live longer? -dark chocolate) as well as sing a song to her. Coming away from these interactions really imprinted in me that everyone has their own struggles and difficulties. A pharmacist might not realize this when they see the patient coming through the pharmacy to pick up their meds. A pharmacist might think “oh it’s just another patient”. This experience gave me the opportunity to just have conversations with elderly people that I normally would never have. It placed me in a situation, often one on one, where I just spoke to people about their lives and other issues. I feel like my attitude toward the elderly has changed and broadened my way of thinking for the better. All these experiences add up as I encounter and will continue to encounter different patient populations throughout my pharmacy

I found it very refreshing to use time I normally spend studying abstract theories and concepts, by actually spending time with people. As a psychology major, I found the autonomy especially important in being able to teach what I felt was important without following strict guidelines. I learned that I really enjoy teaching and engaging in conversations with various people. I had no idea that I would enjoy research but when it comes to public health and mental health I do.…

The experience I gained from doing the Service Learning was eye-opening. It gave me a chance to realize how ground-breaking this project we're doing is necessary. Because this is not just about coming to a meeting and confessing what's on their mind. This is about giving diabetics a second chance of life to live healthy lives and have fun. Also, to shake up the medical community and let the public know about Diabetes and how to prevent it.…

Our small project focused on the leadership and service pillars. Every other week on Saturday from 1-3, we went to Summerwood of Chanhassen to work with the patients who have dementia. Typically we would run each session by doing activities with them. Each week the activities were different but some included, the alphabet game, memory/brain games, kick ball using a beach ball. Throughout the months, we really started to get to know the patients and connected with them and the patient’s looked forward to us coming. . Personally this experience was very…

On last week clinical, I saw how a wound management meeting goes. The nurses were communicating with each other and everyone was giving their opinions about the new equipment they would be using. They discussed the benefits of it and how it would be set up. It was interesting for me to see. I learned about other types of wound that I did not know before like the mucosal membrane injury and how to tell all the different wounds apart.…

I feel that I am qualified to be an officer because I was a member, Vice-President, and then President of my high school’s volunteer club (Interact Club). I went to a small, Christian private school, and the club was student-lead with minimal help from our two faculty sponsors. The Interact Club was my greatest achievement in high school. Before my Secretary, and then Vice President and I came into office, even at our small school, many students, teachers and faculty were unaware of what Interact was and what we did in the community. We brought a new aura, publicity, worked exclusively with our Head of School, designed brand new t-shirts, brought in a new executive board, financial sponsors, and hosted our school’s very first talent show where…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

I also had a one to one conversation with a resident about a programme that was on the television in the lounge. We talked for about 30 minutes and he seemed pleased that I had taken the time to sit a listen to him and have a conversation with him. This was a positive experience for me and made me feel great as I felt I had made him feel happier. It also gave me a chance to get to know the resident and use my communication skills using one to one interactions.…

Identity is who a person is. It determines how you act and how people think of you. For example, a person whose identity is bad is often bound for trouble and for others to look down on them, whereas a person with a good identity is often bound for success and treated well by others. A person’s identity can be affected by many things: where he/she was born, the person’s parents, friends and other things. Through my life experiences I have become creative, spirited, and inquisitive.…

Growing up with divorced parents from two radically different cultures was at first difficult. My mother’s family was from Peru, while my father’s was from Bangladesh. In my young mind, there was an internal struggle with what my identity actually consisted of. I wasn’t wholly from one culture or the other, and felt like a black sheep when interacting with either side of my family. Due to this, I attempted to keep these cultures partitioned. At the time, they were different portions of my life that simply couldn’t intermix. This mentality in turn led me to foolishly shy away from my joint heritage. I kept myself enclosed in a box, blind to the beauty of my surrounding culture. However, as time progressed, I knew I had to make a change in my understanding.…

I learned about different communicative disorders. I learned what to do in order to diagnose, treat, and evaluate the patients by doing assessments, screenings, orofacial examinations, etc. to determine what type of disorder and the severity the patient may have. One of the lectures I found to be interesting was when we learned about dysphagia. I am aware that treating a patient with a swallowing disorder is one of the most dangerous things a SLP can do because the patient can possibly die while in our care, but I believe as long as we are trained well, there should not be a problem. It was interesting learning about the different phases and disorders involved in swallowing. Seeing modified barium swallow studies were attention grabbing to me because you get to see if a patient aspirates and you can visually see the liquids going down their pharynx into their esophagus or…

I felt this was meaningful to our client as well because she was happy to share her story, and also she was very engaged in the activities, and asked…
