Personal Narrative: My College Career
At the end of the day, you are solely responsible for your success and your failure. And the sooner you realize that, you accept that, and integrate that into your work ethic, you will start being successful. As long as you blame others for the reason you aren't where you want to be, you will always be a failure. -Erin Cummings
Being successful is something I currently and always will have as a goal for myself. I believe that through my hard work, dedication, and drive will lead me to great things. Throughout my college career, I plan to major in Marketing, and minor in Public Relations or Human Recourse Development. As far as I can remember, this is the first influence that brought me to my decision of Marketing.
All throughout school I have participated in many clubs and organizations that have not only molded me as a person, but have helped me to develop responsibility, and leadership skills. Currently I am an active member of National Honor Society, and DECA. Both of these organizations, provided by my high school, encourage leadership, volunteer work, and have high expectations for behavior, and grades. Being in National Honor Society has shown me to continually do for others in need. There are always opportunities to get involved with the community, and even create drives for things like stuffed animals, and blankets for children who are sick in the hospital, and “Care Catties” for cancer patients, which include tissues, water bottles, hard candy, and lotion. DECA is another organization I am involved in at Frenship High School. DECA is a business organization for high school marketing students looking to learn, develop and compete in a competitive event. I have been a member since my sophomore

Not only was this influenced by my parents, both being in the business world, but because I had always had an interest in colors, and design, and how things like advertisement and promotion influenced the public. Knowing that goal, I took many classes that pertain to a career in business. This includes, entrepreneurship, speech, business information management, sports marketing, and retailing. By taking these classes I am going to graduate high school with a business endorsement. This means that I have taken a combination of classes that will help further me in a business career. The classes I have taken have really taught me tremendous amounts of how the business world works, and where I want to be in it. Sports marketing, and retailing gave me an insight on how social media, and websites can be a vital tool in the marketing world. By taking classes like speech, and business information management have helped to develop my public speaking, and internet database, and application skills. I have learned much more through DECA, and the classes I have

Michelle, your college path is similar to mine. I started out at my local community college and earned my associates and then I went off to MSU. After a year there I learned that I really didn't like my major so I took a year off and moved back home. To pay the bills I started substitute teaching and instantly fell in love with it. The next year I enrolled at GVSU and earned by bachelors in education. I had planned on getting a teaching job and going straight for my masters. Unfortunately, when I graduated most of the schools were handing out pink slips so I took a job in another industry. Within 2 years I was making what I would as a teacher with 30 years in so I never did make the move back into teaching. Over the next 10 years I got married…

Over the course of my college search, two main qualities have stood out to me in regards to where I want to spend my next four years: post-college opportunities and campus lifestyle. Many schools could have me set up to join the real world and find a decent job. Unfortunately in doing so, I would be forced to sacrifice the valuable life experiences and relationships that come with a great campus lifestyle. Others could provide me with those fun times and great memories, though they would be unable to prepare me for a career and life after college. With SMU however, I was able to find a perfect balance of what I'm looking for. I had the privilege of touring the Hilltop this fall and instantly fell in love with it. The breath-taking campus and…

Since I plan on applying to college sometime in the near future, I would like to make sure that I have more strengths than weaknesses. I have been playing softball for the past ten years and it helps me build my teamwork skills. Along with playing softball, I have been volunteering at the Family YMCA of the Desert for the past three years, until this last year where I got hired as a counselor for the day camps. It has helped my communication skills to get along with my co-workers, parents, and, of course, the children. One of my weaknesses is my technological abilities. I would like to improve my computer skills some more.…
