Personal Narrative: My Coat Of Arms
My Coat of Arms is a representation of my identity, the things i love, my family and culture, my character and my life obstacles. You may think it is very easy to come up with things that make you, you! In my opinion, it was very difficult to think of things that I really loved to do. I never understood how much my family and culture played a part in who I am today. This was an experience I was very happy to have and it taught me a lot of very interesting things.

Family and culture is represented to the top left corner of my Coat of Arms. It is represented by a barn, pigs, cows and a windmill. I drew the windmill to represent Holland, where my family was started. The windmill represents my Dutch culture very well because in Holland it is tradition for everyone to have the dutch windmills in their yards. I drew the pig, cow and barn to represent my family’s culture. Farming has been in my family for over 3 generations! My grandfather decided to take farming to P.E.I in 1973, he moved here and built our own farm from scratch. We started off with pigs raising them from birth to fully grown pigs. About two years ago we got into the veal calves industry instead of the pigs. Farming plays a very big role in my life and my family’s lives because we all grew up around animals and developed many values below like the ones below.

My grandmother has been in and out of the hospital for the past 5 months going through chemo. This has been a huge obstacle in my life as well as my family’s lives. It has really changed the way i look at things, and has taught me what is important in life, and the importance of love. Another physical obstacle i have faced has been my back. I was diagnosed with scoliosis a few years ago. It has changed some of the things i am able to do and at the start was very hard on me because every time i would do something my back would

My father was diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and cirrhosis of the liver. The doctors then gave him two options; if he began taking his medications and stopped drinking he would receive the necessary treatments in order to enjoy a lengthy life without alcohol. Option two included taking his medications but not holding off on his drinking problem, the outcome of this would be my father passing a lot sooner than expected. My family and I were able to come together and realize the seriousness of his drinking problem. Once my father’s drinking decreased, he was a completely different man, creating a strong foundation for my family. As my relationship with my family improved, the rest of my life soon followed. During that time I started working at an elementary school that happened to be in a rough part of town and coaching a U12 boys soccer team. I quickly realized that I enjoyed working with the youth and noticed myself having positive productive relationships with troubled students due to the fact that I was able to relate to their problems in certain aspects.…

The Coat of Arms created for El Patróns Empire, Opium, is based off of literal and metaphorical ideas. For example the entire reason for his empire was his anger that all seven of his siblings died. He believed he deserved the lives they did not get. Also Opium would be nothing without Poppies so to support my shield I used Poppy Flowers. Notice that there are seven flowers supporting the shield, each of the flowers represents a sibling he lost. The smallest flower represents the sister he had that throughout the story El Patrón said died of typhoid and was barely tall enough to see over the windowsill “no, not even on tiptoe”. The crest and crown of my shield are meant to resemble El Patrón himself. In english El Patrón means the boss, to…

One obstacle that I have overcome is that of having lived in so many places throughout my childhood. Throughout my young life, I have had to move upwards of five times. This has caused me to have a few friends from my young life that I am still in touch with. Although this has been hard, I have been able to overcome it, and each move has made me more resilient, and made me appreciate my recent life which has had less obstacles that I can't control. Furthermore, I have also had to overcome the roadblock that was having to live through the pandemic.…

There is a lot of pain and struggle in us that we sometimes find hard to deal with. I was a child when I first learned what cancer meant and what it would do to my beautiful, loving and caring grandmother. I was still too young to understand fully, but I knew more or less that she would be leaving us too soon in her time. I saw her struggle with the changes the sickness had done to her body. She was weak and always tired. It hurt me so much to see her in pain and she always tried her very best to not show that she was hurting around us. She would smile and always have words of wisdom. Growing up she was the only person I thought I could tell my secrets to, my grandmother was my best friend. Before she passed I wanted to hold her, be with her and just…

Adversity has played a part in my life as well. It has taught me I can overcome hurdles and it has made me the woman I am today. As a child, I suffered from debilitating migraine headaches. After every failed doctor appointment and multiple hospital visits being medicated with morphine, I grew tired and frustrated. These migraines would occur about once a month, armed with enough pain to keep me in bed for up to 2 days, they were a huge interference…

All of the setbacks and all the ups and downs show to everyone that you can never give up even when it seems that everything is bad in life. My grandma fighting for that many months not being able to talk or remember really shows how strong and loving of a person she was. This is when I decided that I need to push through life even when you're going through a rough time. She is the reason I have motivation to do anything because I know to this day that she would keep fighting and fighting if she was still here. It has also giving me a positive outlook on life and that anything is possible even if life seems like it can’t get any…

Walking around school and doors slamming into my face because no one would open them. Going out to eat and everyone staring at the “cripple.” Being in a full leg brace with crutches was a challenge. The only good that came from it physically was my arms got a little bit stronger. Under my arms I developed awful rashes that burned me tremendously. Mentally, I became a better person in every way possible. I was a very reckless individual and I stopped at nothing. I'd jump off buildings into snowbanks and not think about the consequences if I got hurt. My first time getting hurt changed my views on everything. Before I do anything, I think about my knee. It taught me to appreciate my body and not to beat on it constantly. I also feel grateful that I do have a very healthy body. Although my knee does hurt all the time, I can still walk. Now when I see someone disabled in anyway, I do not stare. Instead I feel a sense of sympathy for them. I understand the everyday struggles they must go through that other people might not consider. Before my injury, I never realized the simple things in everyday life are the biggest challenges to…

Farms are hard work. Even if you just have pigs and chickens. We, as in my family, have three pigs, and three chickens. We used to have 5 pigs, but we killed three of them yesterday to eat, and sell some at the market. We also killed a couple chickens. We need the money. We can barely survive with what we got, and that isn’t much. Mostly because we have six people in our family. Plus, my dad doesn’t work much, and my mother and I don’t work at all. And, my older brother works, but he makes the most money. My dad barely works. He is too lazy, and all he does is bring some leftover meat from the chickens and pigs to the market, because he can’t keep a real, good paying job. He is an alcoholic and when he had a job, he would always arrive drunk, so he always got fired. When I say we don’t have much, I mean it. We are luckier than people without anything, but not as lucky as the people who have a big house and all the food they want. We are lucky if we get one meal a day. And for clothing, I only have 2 pairs of pants, and 3 shirts. One pair of shoes, and they are too small and all torn up.…

A coat of arms symbolizes who someone is and describes some of their characteristics. In my case I’d like to say I have a broad variety of descriptions of my myself. In block number one I described myself as athletic because I do color guard. I like to think of myself as creative because anytime I get a chance I’m drawing, doodling, making, things or doing something of the sort. Funny was another I used to characterize myself because I’m always making people laugh, as well as making myself laugh, and I like to think that I have a pretty good sense of humor.…

For my creative task I chose to create my own coat of arms. In my coat of arms I included an Australian background with red sand, a dead tree and Uluru. I also included an ocean down the bottom of my coat of arms and the Polish and Slovenian flags. I used an Australian outback background so when people look upon my shield they will recognise Uluru and know I am Australian. Also, the extra touch of the sun coming over Uluru and the clear blue sky symbolizes how I remember seeing it when I travelled around Australia last year. The two flags symbolizes my two grandparents because my grandma migrated from Poland and my Grandpa migrated from Slovenia and, although I am not sure, I think that my last name “SIMENKO”, which I included…
