Personal Narrative: My Career Paths
I recall being asked by my relatives: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and instead of an answer I would give them a blank stare. I had no idea how to respond. Not because there was nothing I found appealing, but because I felt passionate about too many things. I loved music, math, design, helping others, working with kids, analyzing situations and solving problems. There were to many career paths that I liked, but it always seemed to me that in order to follow one I would have to give up the rest. As the end of my sophomore year approached, I spent countless hours online, preparing for the start of the college application process I wanted to have a clear path. I watched TedTalks on psychology, engineering, performing arts and education.

The reason my academics aren’t going well as you or I would like is because of the several family issues I’ve had to face during my high school career. It began my Sophomore year, I found out my mom needed surgery in her arm so the chances of her cancer spreading would be reduced. I was under a great deal of stress worrying about my mother, taking care of my four siblings making sure they knew everything was going to be okay, even though I wasn’t sure myself. It was all up to me; while my other brother worked to help with bills, my mom being in the hospital, and my dad working. Taking care of my siblings consisted of cooking, homework, cleaning, nightly routine, and putting them to bed. When the work was done it would be around 10 o'clock. It was already tough to buckle down and focus on homework without all the stress. With all this my first semester grade was less than great.…

Personal background starts off small, it changes and grows over time into something big, it grows into an identity. Walking down the hallway at school, seeing someone standing alone, my first instinct is to make conversation, compliment, or even just smile at him or her. This instinct came from someone once telling me an act so small could turn a person's entire life around. As a kid, reading encyclopedias about random topics, consumed my time. Many days were spent coming home to find an injured wild animal in my dad's arms waiting to be saved. My dad would sit outside and draw animals, trees, and anything else he saw. Nothing excited me more than trying to draw whatever my dad drew, and as good as he did. Any assignment that was handed to…

During my educational journey specifically at the high school, my goal was to be a best student in our year group. But I could not achieve it. With this behavior, I could not have much information about what is going around on campus and the available platforms to learn and explore more.…

My education will never be complete. This knowledge affords me the ability to grow each and every day. It teaches me to question the world and to learn from these questions. I learn through different lenses and circumstances I experience each day. At seventeen, I am nowhere near complete. I am young. I am flawed. I am naïve. What I have learned has led me down different paths in order to achieve different milestones on my own journey. I am strong. I am creative. I am poised...but most importantly I am learning. My education has allowed me to learn about myself, about others, and about the world. I am evolving through the educational process and through the effort of acquiring knowledge. I have no idea what I will learn tomorrow --some days…

Over the summer, I decided to work at a local car wash. My goals consisted of making money; however, as time passed, my 40 hours a week schedule led to a fortuitous relationship between many of the Latino workers. Work-related questions gradually evolved into conversations and relieving jokes. With my limited Spanish education, I began to grasp at their diverse cultures and backgrounds. Unlike most of the Americans working at the wash, the Latino people all had second jobs and a family to care for. Their schedule would comprise of an eight hour shift at the wash followed by a four hour shift at their second job. Jaime, a middle-aged man who I am still in contact with,…

As a child, we are usually asked one question very early on in life, in the moment we might not know but it one of the biggest questions we will ever be asked. What do you want to be when you grow up? Most children will say they want to be a doctor, teacher, police officer, etc. When i was asked what i wanted to be when i grew up, my answer would vary between giraffeopologist (the name i gave to people who studied giraffes), a witch, or a mad scientist. My answer started to change the years passed, i grew older, became wiser and started to discover who i am and what i was really interested in, the human body and mind. At the age of thirteen i figured i had watched enough criminal minds to classify my self as a criminologist, but in march of 2011 i took a trip to south africa that changed my mind completely and made me certain that i wanted to be a part of doctors without boarders.…
