Personal Narrative: My Career As A Football Player
I stood on the sidelines of my first varsity football game as a sophomore, not quite expecting what happened next. “We need another linebacker!” I heard this knowing I was the next man up, and was forced into a situation I wasn’t quite ready for. I started the rest of the season as our middle linebacker, and I got destroyed. Slow, undersized, and unprepared, I was out of my league. But I was determined not to let my sub-par sophomore year affect the rest of my high-school career as a football player. I spent the offseason working hard to ensure that I wouldn’t have a repeat of last season. I felt much more prepared coming into my junior season, and it showed on the field. However, I was in a package against Big Lake and I shut down receiver. The following week in practice while I was working harder than even Coach Herberg came up to me and said “I’m starting you at the corner this week. You had a good game and you deserve it. Good job kid.” We were playing Willmar and I was very nervous. It was my first varsity start. Coaches said that was normal and said for me to relax. I played extremely well and I was very proud of myself. The following three weeks I have started and became more confrontable with playing on Friday night. My focus level was as high as ever and I was improving my talent day by day. Hard work does really pay off. I worked hard and did my job throughout the year and on the field. I listened to my coaches and stayed true to myself and I sure did pay off. I’m playing varsity and had kept the promise I had with myself last…

The stands were already getting packed and the crowd getting louder as we all walked off of the buses and into the locker rooms of Doc Harris. Inside it was as quiet as a library. My teammates quickly started to strap their gear on and do what was necessary to prepare for one of the biggest games of the season. As I did the same, I thought back to that week of practice and remembered that most of the players that played varsity at my defensive position were hurt and a big part of me hoped that this would be my chance to start in my first varsity football game, a dream that had consumed my mind since the end of the previous football season.…

It all started at ninth street with some friends of mine John and I started recruiting some people to come play football with us. I honestly didn’t know I had a pretty decent arm. I originally was going to start practicing to play wide receiver instead of quarterback. At the time Odell Beckham Jr. ( wide receiver for the New York Giants ) was extremely explosive and dynamic on offense. Seeing him blow up on offense made me want to try out for wide receiver. But somehow John convinced me to play quarterback.…

I was sitting in my freshman geometry class, talking to some friends about injuries. We were talking about how none of us have ever gotten injured in our entire life. I had been playing sports since I was in the sixth grade, and nothing ever happened. In my life I had never broken a bone. I had never even sprained an ankle. I had never worn any kind of brace, taped an ankle, or talked to a trainer about any muscle issue or pain issue. When kids would lay on the court, I always thought they were fine or looking for a little attention. My thought was that they needed to rush off the court because they were dripping sweat all over the hardwood floor, and they were taking too much time up. I used to assume they were killing our momentum when they would fall down and cry because some schools…

I believe I made it easy for them to put me on the baseball team my sophomore year.…

Starting soccer when I was only five years old was challenging because of my October birthday I had to play with all the six year olds.
