Personal Narrative: My Brilliant Career
What career should a person pursue? Up to this point, I viewed work as something one did because one had to. Since reading Michael Gaul’s autobiography entitled “My Brilliant Career,” my viewpoint has shifted from work as a “have to” to a “want to.” A person should pick a career that one could find fulfillment in doing almost every day. In comparison to my career story, Gaul made painting his career because that is what he enjoyed. In my past experience, I have seen some people choose their professions based upon how much they will get paid; whereas, others place the emphasis upon enjoyment regardless of the pay scale. This previous summer, I took care of three girls every day. One story from this summer was taking the youngest girl to swimming lessons every weekday for thirty minutes. After swimming lessons, we would travel to my house and go swimming. There, I helped and trained her to swim with a pool noodle. By the end of the summer, with lots of practice, she was able to swim all by herself. During this experience, I found myself following a routine, teaching the girls something new, and experiencing different teaching techniques. Now, I am currently working in the admissions office at Seward County Community College. I work one hour, three days a week. Working in the admissions office has helped me gain experience working with students and teachers who need assistance. Unfortunately, I sit in a chair and work on a computer which is something I don't like doing. Both of these work experiences, through the good times and bad, have help guide me to the teaching career I wish to have. In the future, I want to pursue my life as a teacher. Although being a teacher doesn't pay well, it will be something I love doing. Just as Gaul followed his heart in becoming a painter, I plan to follow mine.
