Personal Narrative: My Backpacks
1. I choose to 5S my backpack because it had been causing small annoyances in my everyday life. For example, I would spend an unnecessary amount of time looking for a writing utensil, my keys, or wallet. This became a problem when I needed to find these items in a hurry. I also had trouble finding papers (and nametags) I needed in the main part of my bag, because there were many unlabeled folders and papers scattered around.
2. Sort: Contents that were in the front pocket included trash, coins, pens, buttons, a phone and more. I sorted them into categories of trash, coins and things to keep. I was able to utilize an empty mint container to keep my spare change in. I also was able to sort the main part of the backpack into throwaway items (red tagging), folders, laptop, and accessories. I noticed two folders were empty and not being used so I disgarded them. This left

This is important, because if I didn’t have a container I would likely keep throwing loose change randomly in the bag. I will also remember to stash pens and pencils in the separate pouch for easy access after I use them, now that they have a designated area.
Shine: I vacuumed the pencil shaving and dust from the bottom of the bag. I also threw away all of the trash and clutter.
Sustain: One of the biggest challenges in sustaining a process is changing behavior. One of the main behavors that needs changed is putting things in the bag that don’t belong there and then forgetting about them. To combat this, all loose paper will be put in the folder and reviewed at the end of the week to determine if they should be kept, put somewhere else, or thrown away. I will also remember to put items like coins and pens in the correct place in the bag and follow the standardized proceedure. I will also designate a close friend to audit my backpack to ensure I am keeping up with the procedure I have put in

Every soldier in the war had their own responsibility of what to carry. O' Brien focuses heavily on this in the beginning of the book. Everybody had the basics, can openers, c rations, dog tags, cigarettes, matches, water e.t.c. Outside of that each soldier had a thing to carry unlike the others. Ted Lavender held all the dope, Mitchell Sanders carried the 26 pound PRC-25 radio, Henry Dobbins carried the heavy machine gun. Rat Kiely being the medic carried the morphine, plasma, and malaria tablets along with some surgical tape.…

In the short story “The Things They Carried” Tim O’brien uses physical objects that each solider is carrying to try to give us a glimpse of their lives and some insight into their personalities. Most of the things the soldiers carried were determined by necessity, such as can openers, heat tabs, helmets and canteens of water. (269). While the reasoning for O 'brien 's “The Things They Carried” is to speak about the physical objects each soldier carried with them, the internal things they carried were much more meaningful.…

Just watching students in the halls at the beginning of the year will tell you that backpacks are exhaustingly heavy. As Stephanie Kraus’ article “Big Backpacks Equal Big Problems” shows, there is real proof that this is damaging to our bodies. When we carry the excessively heavy bags, it puts pressure on the spine. The spine is important in supporting our bodies, and putting that weight on it can ruin posture, interfere with normal growth patterns, and even cause long term back problems. Over the years backpacks have been getting increasingly heavy, as we struggle to cram the entire contents of our locker into our bags before dismissal. Experts are saying that your bag should be “between 10-20% of your own weight.”…

O'Brien's The Things They Carried describes the many different things soldiers carried during the war. Of course they would carry items they would need to survive but not only that, they would also carry personal items. Some of the things the soldiers would carry were a little odd but would mean something to them. Ranging from Henry Dobbins' girlfriend's pantyhose to Mitchell Sanders' condoms, the unit was filled with bizarre articles that held sentimental feeling. The Things They Carry is a very interesting book telling of war stories which may or may not be true.As the stories go on it tells some things about the soldiers and the things they carry.I believe in the story that everything they carry are either very meaningful to themselves or a necessity.Everyone carries something. Jimmy cross carries his photos of Martha, The men carry can openers, Knives, Kool-Aid, and water, but almost everyone humps (carries) photos of girls, of family, and of friends.Although the men carry these things they also carry things based on superstition.…

During the war the soldiers had little room left in their packs after their required supplies. If the men could gain an advantage several brought extra essentials. Soldiers in the war setting depended on their possessions to survive. “Henry Dobbins, who is a big man, carried extra rations... Dave Jensen carried a toothbrush, dental floss, and several hotel-sized bars of soap...Ted Lavender carried 34 rounds for the M-79 grenade launcher.”(O’Brien , 500-503) These things brought peace of mind to…

If I was leaving home, and I could only pack what would fit inside a medium suitcase, the first thing I would pack would be my cell phone, and charger. These are essential because what if something happens to me. How am I supposed to get in touch with people? The next thing I would pack is money and credit cards. These are very important because if I can’t fit clothes I can purchase my own. The next items are tooth brush and brush I cannot have knots and hair everywhere that is not cute. First Impressions are important. Last thing I would bring is soap and water, to take a bath. I could also use the water to drink if I’m really thirsty.…
